boba Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Does anyone know the story behind the supposed "Detroit soul masters" on the Jacklyn label? I'm pretty sure it is a fake record / doesn't exist ... it looks like misinformation someone fed to Ian Levine that was printed in a 1975 article and that was then repeated / spread. Does anyone have any more details? Maybe it was someone's cover up? Thanks.
Andy Rix Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 What did the article say Bob .. was any title given ? Andy
boba Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 the track is "stirrin' up some soul". This is currently in soul harmony singles and I want to erase it because I'm 99% sure it's some BS. It looks like a rumor that has just passed through the ages and someone probably fed Ian some wrong information. Here is the article: https://www.geocities.ws/unraggiodisoul2001/raresoul.html I'm actually going to erase it (the article also says the label is detroit, which it obviously isn't), but it would be good to get confirmation as to what the track or rumor actually was. Or maybe if there was some other unlisted track or something that should be listed. I'm guessing it was someone's cover up or something.
Pete S Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 (edited) You'll find the answer in one of Ian's columns in the monthly "Black Music" magazines. It's a made up title. From my article on the subject written in 1988 "August 1974: Other sounds reviewed were Aldora Britton-No Cookies In My Bag (Decca), Pam Colquitt-It’s Gotta Be Love (Jacklyn), Detroit Soul Masters-Stirrin’ Up Some Soul (Jacklyn)(is this a real record or was Levine making it up — he says that he is ‘yet to hear it’), Dean Courtney- We Have A Good Thing (RCA) and Lenny Williams-I Couldn’t Find Nobody (Fantasy)". https://www.rare-soul.com/wordpress/about/the-northern-soul-explosion/ Edited November 29, 2012 by Pete S

I was asking if there was some more specific story where someone fed him the info or if it was a cover up or something. Either way, I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist, thanks for your help.

Nobody would know that but him. When I first read that I was 14 and he was so famous he could have been a pop star or something, never dreamt I'd ever get to know him. If I ever speak to him again I'll ask him but he's avoiding me by the looks of it.
Prophonics 2029 Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 I did find the other version on you tube if this was the record then covered up, same group who did String Of Velvet.

Touch Of Velvet, A Sting Of Brass? The Marketts on WB, that's got The Avengers Theme on the other side, both really good versions.
