Should Sellers who use the feature (Reserve Not Met), place they reserve amount in the text to save us all time ? After all they won't sell until we go past it and I am sure many of us have used Contact Seller to ask the question............wouldn't just make more sense to state ?

If the reserve were declared, then there is no need to list with a reserve in the first place, just have opening bid set at that amount. I think the idea is to give punters a bit of excitement.

I have wondered that in the past too and concluded that they might wish to 'test the market level'. If they set the starting bid at the required reserve, then the seller has no way of knowing what the market will pay if the reserve is not met. Gives them an option if they still want to sell, but don't acheive the reserve first time around. I think.

I think there is a point in listing the reserve, it's telling people to go ahead and bid even if it's under the reserve and you might consider it. Honestly, that's a positive as lots of people just don't bid on reserve auctions because they think it's some unreasonable amount and they generally are a bad idea.

Or for certain delusional sellers, listing the insane reserve tells you to not even try.

If the seller wanted a particular price for a record, there are ways to give themselves and buyers several options.

He could list the item as an auction with a 'Buy it now' price, and the 'Make an offer; option. He can also set the 'Offers' option to automatically reject offers under a certain amount so's to stop messers offering 1p,

That is one way to possibly accept lower prices than an asking price but it is different than setting a reserve and telling people what it is and allowing bidding. Allowing bidding allows the psychology of the auction to come into play where people can fight it out. There is a different psychology entirely in the "make offers". For example, if a seller has a high BIN with offers, I probably would think they were unreasonable and not bother where if they had a high reserve that was stated I might put in a bid just because I might think I could get it for a price I want. You also only have 3 chances to make an offer. They are slightly different in how a buyer would approach the listing with possibly different effects.

From experience, a lot of bidders are put off by auctions with reserves. Best to set the minimum bid at the lowest price you'd be happy to sell it for.

As an example, I advertised a record earlier this year with a starting bid of £20, but with an undisclosed reserve of £125. Advertised it twice, and it didn't go on either occasion. On the third attempt, I set the minimum bid at £125, with no reserve. It went for £289!

yeah, it's simply ebay entertainment. i usually just see those slanted photos and move on, but occasionally click on his auctions to read his ridiculous reserve

His Paris "Sleepless Nights" still hasn't sold at $1300 + USD with a few hours to go.

Surprised he didn't list his reserve on this one.

Ended at over $1600 and still not hit the reserve, but someone give him a call I'm sure he'll let it go for $2500 !!!!!

"Sleepless Nights " has been relisted with a starting bid of $2200 and no reserve (!!) .

Any takers ??
