Guest CARL D Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Hi there, two tracks i like a lot at the mo' are Brad Lundy-Breaking Point and Little Anthony-Call Me The Joker(would make a great ender imo). Anyone else rate them, or know if they've been aired at nighters? Cheers, Carl.
Pete S Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Brad Lundy is horrible sound quality though, extremely quiet and on those pale blue copies, scratchy even on mint copies - thats why most people go with the Deena Johnson version. I think Little Anthony is an LP only track. Both have probably had 'minor' spins out.
Guest CARL D Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Thanks Pete. Did you get my pm re: mp3s? Carl. boba Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Brad Lundy is a jamaican thing right? I know it was pressed in the US. He credits himself but I think deena's is first. I think deena's is way better personally.

I think deena's is way better personally. Bahamas rather than Jamaica Bob. Pete's right, the Julmar recording ain't too good a quality, think that was from 68, not sure when the Lundy issue came out? was it recorded in Nassau? Deena Johnson was 1965 right? and different writing credits? can never work out which version I like best? love 'em both! Little Anthony's "Call Me The Joker" superb beat ballad from the master... Teddy Randazzo, and LP only I believe, off the superb Veep LP "Payin Our Dues". someone once told me they had seen it on 45 on UA, but don't know about that? Steve 1
Markw Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Brad Lundy is one of my all time faves. I know what Pete means about the sound quality, sadly. Prefer Brad's rich tones to Deena Johnson, but that record is a beauty too. Wonderful song..............talk about beat ballads vs funky Northern, eh?? 1

Played Brad Lundy at the White Barn last night, and yes, shame about the Julmar quality. great record though.
Pete S Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Thanks Pete. Did you get my pm re: mp3s? Carl. No mate sorry, not got any PM's from you?
boba Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Deena Johnson is supposedly Jo Armstead. yeah, I had heard that. I don't know if people just say that because it sounds like her or if they have more concrete evidence. I think it's weird that she didn't write any of the songs though, she was already a songwriter with ashford and simpson around that same time. The Deena Johnson recordings are all new york / new jersey. Where were ashford and simpson based at that time?
Dave Moore Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Bob, Ashford and Simpson were in NY around that time. ('65) They were doing backups for Jerry Ross' set up. (Sunny, Apple Peaches pumpkin Pie etc). Shortly after this they would head to Motown and Ms Armstead made her way to your home town. It is a quandry about the provenance of the Deena Johnson 45 insomuch that Ms Armstead has claimed that it is indeed her. I think it first came out in an "In The Basement" interview. When she appeared at New York's Dig Deeper gig a few years ago I asked them to confirm with her and she did. One of the 'quandries' is that when she was with The Ikettes a few years before there was another girl with her named Delores Johnson. (Dee Dee). AND, to add to the confusion there are references that Delores Johnson was actually a lady called Flora Williams. Like you I'm not convinced. Mainly due to the credits on the 45. As you rightly state she's always been involved in her recording material in at least some capacity although maybe the Wild Deuce 45 was an early attempt to get a foot in the door? Regards Dave
Speedlimit Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 hi pete brad lundy was a stafford spin for keb in the early days
Guest Brett F Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 I've got all three label takes of the Brad Lundy 45'...the best (for me) is the hard 1970's take on Lundy 1401......

I know lundy 1401 and julmar 2647, what is the third released version? are they different recordings, different mixes, etc? I only own Lundy 1401 so I can't compare.
Guest Brett F Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 The Red label Lundy and Julmar are same take 60's...the light blue Lundy, with I Want To Share on the flip is a 70's take.
boba Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 The Red label Lundy and Julmar are same take 60's...the light blue Lundy, with I Want To Share on the flip is a 70's take. Ok I'm confused now (sorry if I'm being thick). The light blue lundy is a florida press with a bahamas address and is Lundy 1401. It has "I want to share" on it. The julmar is a 60s press with a blue and white label. What is the red lundy you're talking about? The only red lundy I know is Lundy 1940 - Brad Lundy - Baby if you ever need my love / What would you do and it's from 1977. I would love any more info / a scan of the red lundy with "breaking point". I'm trying to get all the info correct for soul harmony singles. Thanks in advance for your help.
Guest Brett F Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Hi Bob, doing this on mobile phone, so bit tricky typing..Red Lundy is 6222 (?), clip on YouTube, think flip is I love you.
Guest Brett F Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Ps..the red one sounds like the Julmar take to me and different from the 1401 version, but not listened to any for a while, but certain the 1401 is different...check the YouTube clips against your copy.

I found the clip on youtube. I haven't compared closely but it sounds like the julmar record. I can't find the other lundy version on youtube but I believe you that it's different. Thanks again.
