Pete S Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 That was probably me, Dave and I do take back the 'you lot' in my post as I know many people do of course go out. And so what gives others God given right to criticise other music - Mal called it crap in his opening post, he didn't praise it. And those that don't go out refer to it as 'funky shite' etc can only hear it if they go out because they wont play it at home, but then they don't go out and so therefore don't hear it so why bloody moan about it?! But it was the thread title really that did it LOL Anyway I am over it now, I have just done a very good bit of car parking that I am happy about. And as some of my records have been posted on here; here's another... Dave I will match your Jimmy Mack with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ySdzv46Thk 2
Jaco Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Is Ritchie Adams - " Better off without you" a bit too slow to be a beat ballad? Either way another wonderful Randazzo track. Another favourite of mine is Barbara Banks - "Ain't I worth a dime"
Dave Abbott Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Dave I will match your Jimmy Mack with this beautiful Pete
Chalky Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Is Ritchie Adams - " Better off without you" a bit too slow to be a beat ballad? Slow is what a ballad is.
Chalky Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Moves between a beat ballad and almost mid tempo.... Great though.... 1
Pete S Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Slow is what a ballad is. A beat ballad can be as slow as you like as long as it's got some sort of - beat....
Chalky Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 A beat ballad can be as slow as you like as long as it's got some sort of - beat.... Exactly....the name says it all.
Dave Moore Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 And so what gives others God given right to criticise other music - Mal called it crap in his opening post. Dave, No he didn't. Read it again. He was bemoaning the fact that it was perceived as a new thing when in fact it has always been collected by soul fans with a broad taste. Anyways.........not many give Maxine Brown a run for her money but Ms Kilgore beats her to pulp with this. I still need a WDJ of this if anyone can help. Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/D5iN62AFFwU

Oh bollox I have just had to read it about ten times - I thought he was saying it's crap and always was... Mal - I openly apologise to you...though not for the thread title, and....some things aren't a laugh when you feel passionate about them the rest of you can still fack off 5
Dave Moore Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 the rest of you can still fack off  Here's another I kinda always got on with....he's never gonna be a Wilson Pickett or a James Brown more a better quality Tom Jones. This man could SING! and he could sing BIGTIME! Regards, Dave 2
KevH Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Oh bollox I have just had to read it about ten times - I thought he was saying it's crap and always was... Dave Moore Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Humungous record. Always loved it. Used to play it amongst some others on Saturday afternoons at Hitsville. Glass of beer, whack it up loud, relax, kick back, and wait for the nodding looks of appreciation from the sun baked terrace. Happy days!! Regards, Dave
Jaco Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Slow is what a ballad is. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of a sufficient tempo, however slow, to be able to have a shuffle to as opposed to a ballad that you might feel inclined to only listen to. No matter anyway, as all of the stuff listed is right up my street.
NEV Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Not sure if this one qualifies ,but sublime version for me
jocko Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I know I say it everytime but it brings a warm glow to my groin to say I have played loads of these out when djing, before I was retired Nothing else to add other than Bobby King is a crossover record and Jessie Fisher was played 20 years ago which makes it Northern with a twist. 2
jocko Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 (edited) And in nature of sharing, one of my favourite, although sure I have that on crossover shelf, dilemmas... Always been one of my faves, I think Ady H played this one out rather than me, tempo terrorists look away now. Edited November 15, 2012 by jocko 2
Simsy Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 No only the 'you lot' bit and that is not what i am fecked off about...... Ah right you are, so what you fecked off about then? No look in all seriousness, you did me a cd last Summer of more contemporary tunes and as said, there were/are some real winners on there. Keep doing what you're doing and don't take no shit off nobody.

Guest gordon russell Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 some folk seem to be confusing slow soul records with durgy beat ballads...........jackie beavers? a soul record surely?....beat ballad never........come on!!
Guest gordon russell Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 (edited) A beat ballad can be as slow as you like as long as it's got some sort of - beat.... although a beat ballad is slow............to me it becomes a beat ballad when the singer sings like f**king dean martin/perry como/frank sinatra ect ect.......god awful shite.........please people do try and differenciate between slow soul and 60's beat ballad aka 60's lounge music. worst of the lot and perfect examples.....big joe turner "two loves have l" kurt harris "emporer of my babys heart"..........who in their right mind goes out to hear this kind of stuff....and whats more who bloody well wants to play it....it,s LOUNGE MUSIC.......thats why they died out in the states Edited November 16, 2012 by gordon russell
Jordirip Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Another lip trembler. Although I'm not sure if it qualifies as a Beat Ballad...more kind of.. err...sweet deep. Fontella Bass.
jocko Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 You are obviously spending too much time hanging with the rock and roll BB's on FB. All the best beat ballads are great soul records, just some people don't seem to get that hence you get Perry Como and Connie Stevens sound a likes. Anyone having seen your stylish slow dancing at LL you were made for Roy Hamilton smooch-a-thon you are just resisting your urges.
Russ Vickers Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Not sure if this one qualifies ,but sublime version for me A 'Stepper' as opposed to a Beat Ballad' I would have thought. Russ
Mal C Posted November 16, 2012 Author Posted November 16, 2012 Has anybody mentioned Tommy Hunt yet? the hold on track is different on the Atlantic release 45 to that on one of the early Kent LP's, cant remember but one is more of a beat ballad than an out and out ballad, I think.... anyhow they are all F*** Great... also add parade of Broken Heartaches to that list.. mal
Guest Jamie Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Yes mate, you sure did, and you know me when i get a record it stays with me for my time on this earth.. And you know me Brett, always giving them away when caught up in the moment. Think this also got an airing on that very same evening/morning: Kenny Shepard
Guest Brett F Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 And you know me Brett, always giving them away when caught up in the moment. Think this also got an airing on that very same evening/morning: Kenny Shepard Fantastic..Kenny Shepard, i'm just holding Gil Bernal until you start collecting again....Then it can return to it's rightful heir.
Guest Jamie Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Fantastic..Kenny Shepard, i'm just holding Gil Bernal until you start collecting again....Then it can return to it's rightful heir. I would probably have a collection if everyone did the same In different circumstances the records would never have gone & not a day goes by without wishing I still had them. At some point in the future that might change & I'll be back in the hunt.
Guest Bearsy Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 got quite a few ideas for me funeral music now thanks lads
Dave Moore Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 some folk seem to be confusing slow soul records with durgy beat ballads...........jackie beavers? a soul record surely?....beat ballad never........come on!! Can't they be both? Soul and a beat ballad? Here's one that I've always thought was great! Hey.......written by a white bloke, produced by two white blokes and even (god forbid), sung by a white bloke! Even published by the same company that had Paul Simon and that there soulful Neil Sedaka as clients! That should be more enough to get you steaming! Tin Pan Alley at it's best.... Regards, Dave
Guest Polyvelts Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Love beat ballads but personally would not to like to hear too many played in one evening, in fact just one would be about enough per nighter, preferably as the last record, very useful for letting people know that now is the time to go home, Does Frank Hutson qualify as a 'trendy' funky beat ballad ? One crossover too many perhaps ?!
Guest gordon russell Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Can't they be both? Soul and a beat ballad? Regards, Dave Dave....not sure they can......it,s not a matter as to whether we like a tune or not.....it,s the style in which the singer sings it....soon as they go all DEAN MARTIN on us.......it becomes a beat ballad
Markw Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 got quite a few ideas for me funeral music now thanks lads
Dave Moore Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Dave....not sure they can......it,s not a matter as to whether we like a tune or not.....it,s the style in which the singer sings it....soon as they go all DEAN MARTIN on us.......it becomes a beat ballad I suppose it's all in the individual's interpretation eh? For me it's not the singer sounding like Dean Martin that is the attraction. It's the dramatic effect of using highs and lows, often using timpani, the chink of the rhythm guitar, it's a build up to a more aggressive chorus, and the often 'echoey' sound that gives an impression of space. Here's another that I've always loved. Could fall into loads of pigeon holes if you that were your want: Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/DWh3aHfaOm0
Corbett80 Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Bit more uptempo but always liked Mathew Brown on Sew City 1
Popular Post NEV Posted November 16, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 16, 2012 A 'Stepper' as opposed to a Beat Ballad' I would have thought. Russ Oh well ...at least i tried Russ To be fair though and being constructive here ... the funk v beat ballad debate or any other funk v whatever debate will continue ,of that i am certain .... But for me ,it's about meeting in the middle ....the soulful funk i buy into is not the same as out and out James Brown "i feel good " or blaxploitation shaft sounding funk. Its a fine line and that's where some people get confused . Mid -tempo or uptempo ,a good funk tinged song /record gives me as much, if not more pleasure as any example posted up here . Ann Bogus .... Marva Whitney ,Ike Noble ,Connie Austin ..black smoke band ...Audrey Royal ...all good tunes for me Just being constructive ....and remember boys & girls ..nobody can tell you what you can and can't listen to ..but i for one would love it if we did'nt pigeon hole .. It comes in different flavours ,but its all (to qoin a phrase from Tats and Mr Hampseys pages) JUST SOUL 4
Dazdakin Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Does that mean I just kinda stand still then?? As my back was never turned in the first place by the "mighty beat Ballard" IMHO yes they have a place at the end of a spot or the end of a night if they have to be played out ever at a venue, failing that they are fantastic for doing the ironing to or driving back from a venue, other than that they are not for me as I still believe the northern scene is,was, and always will be a dance scene first!! Just an opinion though Daz

Russ
Russ Vickers Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 I love it all....Beat Ballads are brilliant, but need to be played sensibly within a night/set....IMO BB lend themselves more to small intimate dark clubs, were their atmospheric brilliance can raise the general atmosphere of a venue/dance floor if dropped strategically.... I agree with Nev on the funk thing too....many people misunderstand the genre & again, when dropped in amongst everything else can set a room on fire....Im a soul fan first & foremost, altho I prefer dancers in a club environment & I enjoy most things that get played out when programmed sensibly within a set.... Best Russ

Just an opinion though Daz I agree totally Daz It's hard to accept for some people ,but in truth ,everything as it's place, and in the right place at the right time is the crux. I can remember once asking Soul Sam if he would'nt mind playing Norris Vines or Jimmy Bo Horne at a nighter ...he politely told me that he would love to ,but did'nt think they were right for the time of night he was dj'n . Looking back and in hindsight ,he was totally right . Chill out venues and get together venues, put on by people who just wanna share soul music with like minded people, are my choice for the slower stuff , big room venues and all nighters are and should be mainly uptempo dancers ,with a slowie chucked in to stop people from having heart attacks from refusing to accept growing old gracefully P.s .. For anyone who wants to know ... no i did'nt give Sam a mouth full of abuse or a disgusted look ..that's what disrespectful do at plastic soul nights 1
Cobbles Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 (edited) always liked this beat ballad out of barbados and this midtempo out of NY and this one from detroit Edited November 16, 2012 by cobbles
Dave Pinch Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Bit more uptempo but always liked Mathew Brown on Sew City hmmm ..fantastic record....maybe too slow to be northern but too fast for a beat ballad....it does pick up in the 2nd half of the record tho
Chalky Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 hmmm ..fantastic record....maybe too slow to be northern but too fast for a beat ballad....it does pick up in the 2nd half of the record tho Mid-tempo if you ask me. Great underplayed record mind. Last one I remember giving it any serious spins was Steve Smith Bretby era. 2
Dave Pinch Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 i play it once a flood chalky.....i had it on a tape early 90`s covered as mathew barnett..... not sure who the tape was from....probably steve smith as i had a few from him at that time 1
