I know this may go over some people's heads, but before I put forward my little statement, just let me state ill buy anything, if its good...and this is a bit of fun, well kinda...

So, we're in 2012, and the 'funky' stuff has been in vogue for some years now, which is kinda crap really because if you collect all styles it always was, However, the mighy Beat Ballad, or serious sixties slowie now seems out of pace, and I F***** hate that!!!!

My feeling is There should be a back lash!!!

Give me a 60's beat ballad over a funky trendy any old day of the week ..

My feeling is that you and all the other posters on this thread should actually go out - maybe at night and maybe at a current allnighter -

just find it incredible; that you lot go no where and think you have a say. well f*ck off

Makes me laugh with all this beat ballards....then slagging off the new funky northern. I ask myself what is going on. Funk has been played at niters since the mid 70s, but back then some of it sounded a bit more like disco. And as for beat ballards think Ade won't mind me saying that in the late 70s early 80s the 100 Club used to play loads. So what is all the fuss about !!!

Some great funk tunes and some great ballards being played now....but must say I have seen some pop posing as beat ballards.

Some folks need a head torch, just so they can really see what's going on up their own arses.

Why do some people feel they have some sort of God given right to criticise others simply because they happen to attend a couple of dos they like, (mainly as DJs anyway),

Get real people. Another enjoyable thread in danger of being ruined by the "'attendance cogniscenti".

F++kin' pitiful. :(

But Dave, the topic starter's first post was slightly provocative don't you think. To get a response? If a thread starts with a "versus" in it - avoid it if of a nervous disposition.

Yes,

But it's the styles of music he was referring to. AND he sang the praises of both styles. NOT the old "I go here - you don't so therefore I have a right to slag you off". I'm sick of it Mate. It spoils too many musically based threads. Just post the f==kin' music and let it stand on it's own two feet. You don't like it? Fine. then pop along to a thread that suits you more. It's supposed to be about enjoyment, not some ego trip for frustrated DJs to vent their arrogance. Plus, as a moderator I'm duty bound to read all this gubbins!:thumbsup:

Now then.....back to the topic:

Referred to on this thread as 'Brilliant' and 'Mostly Dirge'. Make your own mind up. I know what I think.

Regards,

Dave

How can anyone describe this as a dirge? And Walter Jackson' "It's an uphill climb to the bottom" is way up there near the top of the list of all beat ballads

obviously its very much tongue in cheek, and I meant it as just an excuse to put up lots of Beat ballads...I go out, I buy funk, I'll buy anything as long as I like it, but I LOVE Beat Ballads, I just wished they were a super trendy as they were, or maybe good music does not go out of fashion...

just a bit of fun mate..

Must add Gene Anderson ' Tell Me That You Love Me' on Nu Tone is staggering, one of my all time favourite 45's, no clip on you tube or the web ?

That's the flip on 'Do You Love Me Baby'. Old Soulsville tune Mr F. I think some nights we probably played all B Sides. Happy times indeed.

Favourite beat ballad on vinyl: Irv Peddrew "Take it from me girl" - there's a short clip on youtube but not enough to get the whole build-up, really beautiful record, this still seems a pretty slept-on 45, HB Barnum at the desk doing his magic

Best on stage: Roscoe Robinson doing "I who have nothing" - forget any association with this song by Tom Jones or the like, this is an 84 year old man singing his heart out about missed chances and longing, dropping to his knees and pleading, tears to the eyes guaranteed

Think the problem might be that some replying to this....go out and this kinda music kills most nights. Whilst others replying to this maybe don,t go out...just listen to the tune at home as a stand alone tune........hence mighty difference of opinion......mind you l wouldn,t listen to beat ballads at home

Ive seen Karl H mentioned a time or two, he was nearer soul than he was funk by what he played. Yes he played funky edged dancers but he didn't go as far as some DJs seem to be going. For those the crowd is a minority, the funk doesn't go down well at most venues, the beat is too far removed from what a northern soul dancer wants. Im not saying it is crap before anyone jumps in, just not right for this scene. But the funky edged stuff does and as said it has always been there. The funk is a fad and will be where beat ballads are now in no time at all with just a select band wanting to hear and dance to it.

Greatest beat ballads? George Freeman "Down And Out" and Bobby Bennett "Alone With My Tears".

That was probably me, Dave and I do take back the 'you lot' in my post as I know many people do of course go out. And so what gives others God given right to criticise other music - Mal called it crap in his opening post, he didn't praise it. And those that don't go out refer to it as 'funky shite' etc can only hear it if they go out because they wont play it at home, but then they don't go out and so therefore don't hear it so why bloody moan about it?! But it was the thread title really that did it LOL

Anyway I am over it now, I have just done a very good bit of car parking that I am happy about. And as some of my records have been posted on here; here's another...
