Popular Post Mal C Posted November 13, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2012 (edited) I know this may go over some people's heads, but before I put forward my little statement, just let me state ill buy anything, if its good...and this is a bit of fun, well kinda... So, we're in 2012, and the 'funky' stuff has been in vogue for some years now, which is kinda crap really because if you collect all styles it always was, However, the mighy Beat Ballad, or serious sixties slowie now seems out of pace, and I F***** hate that!!!! My feeling is There should be a back lash!!! So Brothers and Sisters, Before you buy your next 45 that's got that new trendy forward thinking dj description next to it, think closely, there is no going back, if you turn your back once again and don't choose a sixties beat ballad, the memories will start to fade, let me just list a couple to stirr that memory, and ask you state your allegience below, list em, and list em proud!!!! I Love Sixties Beat Ballads!!!!! George wydell, jimmy helms, wade flemons, tommy hunt, Sam fletcher, Johnny maestro, Kenny carter, Roy Hamilton, Freddy Cole, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gK-JDE3oRl0 Mal.c Edited November 13, 2012 by Mal.C. 4
Premium Stuff Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Is 'Beat Ballad' a Northern scene term, or it is used more widely in other music genres? Cheers Richard

Pete S Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Dunno - Buddy Smith on Brute, Dee Edwards on Tuba - do they count as BBs? Tony MIddleton - Paris Blues (Mala) awesome Little Anthony - It's Not The Same (Veep) Am I barking up the right tree here? Cheers Richard Paris Blues is an out and out Northern Soul stomper so definitely not a beat ballad. Little Anthony is one. Most beat ballads have quiet, understated choruses then hit you with a huge chorus.

Popular Post nickp Posted November 14, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 14, 2012 https://youtu.be/RwXwshqLzwg This may seem to be an obvious choice in this genre yet it never fails to send me to ' that special place'. A truly stunning vocal and such a haunting melody, absolute genius. Looking forward to this thread turning up lots more of very special and also very personal sounds. 4

Mark R Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Freddie Houston - If I Had Known (Old Town)..........incredible Big City Soul from NYC. I would profess that these are records for SOUL fans, not Northern Soul fans..........and before anyone bites, of course you can be both, but many aren't so don't get records like this. That's very much their loss!! Cheers, Mark R

Popular Post Simsy Posted November 14, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 14, 2012 Give me a 60's beat ballad over a funky trendy any old day of the week .. 4
Dave Moore Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 And of course the Master of the BB himself. Who says whitey ain't got soul.....?? Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/cTGGZkdHAAQ 2
Pete S Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Dave the Drug is adamant that the Wki entry for Northern Soul should be amended so that I can personally take credit for introducing the term Beat Ballad late 80's we were desperately trying to find a phrase to describe this sort of records as 'midtempo' was proving inadequate. I don't know if I got it off a record list maybe so I don't think I actually did invent the term Beat Ballad, but I think I probably was the first person to put it into print and suddenly it was everywhere. I know the term has been about for 50 years - but not in this context. But hey what do I know, I'm probably making all this up to look clever. 2

Jordirip Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Beat ballad or mid tempo, who gives a shit for these terms. Brilliance is brilliance. Porgy and the Monarchs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9JkhL1S5Do 1

I think the concept was 90% northern beat ballads and 10% Spector wall of soundalikes.
Roburt Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Detroit version of a Beat Ballad. Voice, song, musicianship........dogs doodahs. Regards, Dave I've loved this track since I bought a copy of the UK 'Rare Stamps' Stax LP as a new release.

Steve Ss Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Hey, a topic i feel I can contribute to. Twenty five years ago these were big beat ballads. Not sure if in today's parlance they may be mid tempo, but for my money i would pick two big and pretty obvious choices: from the ladies......Mitty Collier "my party" chess from the gents.......Walter Jackson "after you there can be nothing" okeh cheers 1

Jaco Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Definitely one of my favourite genres, so for me stuff like: Charades - Never set me free Jerry Fuller - Turn to me Ed Townsend - Don't lead me on Jean Wells - Don't come running to me would do it every time. 1
arnie j Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 some absolutely fantastic pieces of soul music already mentioned but this one kills me everytime, heartbreaking stuff, pure soul brilliance, stafford heaven, great thread jason 1
Guest CapitolSC Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 In the 80s Beat Ballads were sprinkled thru djs sets But with the coming of crossover and more funky sounds were relegated to become enders once again. Bring back the Beat Ballad Al H https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-bKDmrUGgo
MrsWoodsrules Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 I like em as closers, but couldn't have em all night but they have there place Prefer em a bit more uptempo, something like Changing Scene When The City Sleeps does it for me, fairly slow, big production. That said, RH Panic Is On is just class. Aid.
