Dunno - Buddy Smith on Brute, Dee Edwards on Tuba - do they count as BBs?

Tony MIddleton - Paris Blues (Mala) awesome

Little Anthony - It's Not The Same (Veep)

Am I barking up the right tree here?

Cheers

Richard

I know this may go over some people's heads, but before I put forward my little statement, just let me state ill buy anything, if its good...and this is a bit of fun, well kinda...

So, we're in 2012, and the 'funky' stuff has been in vogue for some years now, which is kinda crap really because if you collect all styles it always was, However, the mighy Beat Ballad, or serious sixties slowie now seems out of pace, and I F***** hate that!!!!

My feeling is There should be a back lash!!! So Brothers and Sisters, Before you buy your next 45 that's got that new trendy forward thinking dj description next to it, think closely, there is no going back, if you turn your back once again and don't choose a sixties beat ballad, the memories will start to fade, let me just list a couple to stirr that memory, and ask you state your allegience below, list em, and list em proud!!!!

I Love Sixties Beat Ballads!!!!!

George wydell, jimmy helms, wade flemons, tommy hunt, Sam fletcher, Johnny maestro, Kenny carter, Roy Hamilton, Freddy Cole,

Mal.c

Doug Banks - Baby Since You Went Away &, slightly more up-tempo, Rita Da Costa - You And Nothing More

A couple I enjoy at home with my pipe and slippers.

Edited 15th Nov to include missing video clips.

Paris Blues is an out and out Northern Soul stomper so definitely not a beat ballad.

Little Anthony is one.

Most beat ballads have quiet, understated choruses then hit you with a huge chorus.

I think you mean verses in this context Mr S............

In what context though, I absolutely love the slower soulful stuff

George Freeman and the like, but they wouldn't get a night bouncin' would they ??

Freddie Houston - If I Had Known (Old Town)..........incredible Big City Soul from NYC.

I would profess that these are records for SOUL fans, not Northern Soul fans..........and before anyone bites, of course you can be both, but many aren't so don't get records like this.

That's very much their loss!!

I would have to disagree - I'm not a massive SOUL fan but there's nothing I love more than real beat ballads like the one you suggested.

Dave the Drug is adamant that the Wki entry for Northern Soul should be amended so that I can personally take credit for introducing the term Beat Ballad

late 80's we were desperately trying to find a phrase to describe this sort of records as 'midtempo' was proving inadequate. I don't know if I got it off a record list maybe so I don't think I actually did invent the term Beat Ballad, but I think I probably was the first person to put it into print and suddenly it was everywhere. I know the term has been about for 50 years - but not in this context.

But hey what do I know, I'm probably making all this up to look clever.

Whereas this is a real beat ballad, all the ingredients you need from, as you say, the master

Give me a 60's beat ballad over a funky trendy any old day of the week ..

Awesome........ordinarily I'm not a collector of 60's soul, but if I were this would be near the top of the list.........I love it!! And to think that later in life Wade was a member of EW&F!!

Hope this doesn't degenerate into a Beat Ballad v Midtempo thread!

Yeah actually Dave I contradicted myself on the two podcasts I listed because there are a couple on there that aren't strictly beat ballads. I think the concept was 90% northern beat ballads and 10% Spector wall of soundalikes.

Detroit version of a Beat Ballad. Voice, song, musicianship........dogs doodahs.

Regards, Dave

I've loved this track since I bought a copy of the UK 'Rare Stamps' Stax LP as a new release.

Wall of Sound - Hang on.? Hang on Pete. .Love bb's myself, but dont get the "trendy funky shite" vs "bb's"...as different as chalk and cheese. Each has its place.

Carry on.

Hey, a topic i feel I can contribute to.

Twenty five years ago these were big beat ballads.

Not sure if in today's parlance they may be mid tempo, but for my money i would pick two big and pretty obvious choices:

from the ladies......Mitty Collier "my party" chess

from the gents.......Walter Jackson "after you there can be nothing" okeh

cheers

That Walter jackson is a brilliant choice

Definitely one of my favourite genres, so for me stuff like:

Charades - Never set me free

Jerry Fuller - Turn to me

Ed Townsend - Don't lead me on

Jean Wells - Don't come running to me

would do it every time.

I like em as closers, but couldn't have em all night but they have there place

Prefer em a bit more uptempo, something like Changing Scene When The City Sleeps does it for me, fairly slow, big production.

That said, RH Panic Is On is just class.

Aid.

Another slice of class: A very young Ralfi Pagan and arranged by "The Wiz". Top notch.

man that is fantastic, first time for me ! brilliant soul music, got a voice like little anthony, was ray paige a white singer ? just wondering

He was a Latin singer. I think he was Puerto Rican or summat. It's the flip to his "Ain't No Soul (Left In These Old Shoes).
