Trendy 'funky Stuff' Versus The Mighty Sixties Beat Ballad

I know this may go over some people's heads, but before I put forward my little statement, just let me state ill buy anything, if its good...and this is a bit of fun, well kinda...

So, we're in 2012, and the 'funky' stuff has been in vogue for some years now, which is kinda crap really because if you collect all styles it always was, However, the mighy Beat Ballad, or serious sixties slowie now seems out of pace, and I F***** hate that!!!!

My feeling is There should be a back lash!!! So Brothers and Sisters, Before you buy your next 45 that's got that new trendy forward thinking dj description next to it, think closely, there is no going back, if you turn your back once again and don't choose a sixties beat ballad, the memories will start to fade, let me just list a couple to stirr that memory, and ask you state your allegience below, list em, and list em proud!!!!

Paris Blues is an out and out Northern Soul stomper so definitely not a beat ballad.

Little Anthony is one.

Most beat ballads have quiet, understated choruses then hit you with a huge chorus.

I would have to disagree - I'm not a massive SOUL fan but there's nothing I love more than real beat ballads like the one you suggested.

Dave the Drug is adamant that the Wki entry for Northern Soul should be amended so that I can personally take credit for introducing the term Beat Ballad :lol:

late 80's we were desperately trying to find a phrase to describe this sort of records as 'midtempo' was proving inadequate. I don't know if I got it off a record list maybe so I don't think I actually did invent the term Beat Ballad, but I think I probably was the first person to put it into print and suddenly it was everywhere. I know the term has been about for 50 years - but not in this context.

But hey what do I know, I'm probably making all this up to look clever.

Awesome........ordinarily I'm not a collector of 60's soul, but if I were this would be near the top of the list.........I love it!! And to think that later in life Wade was a member of EW&F!!

Yeah actually Dave I contradicted myself on the two podcasts I listed because there are a couple on there that aren't strictly beat ballads. I think the concept was 90% northern beat ballads and 10% Spector wall of soundalikes.

Twenty five years ago these were big beat ballads.

Not sure if in today's parlance they may be mid tempo, but for my money i would pick two big and pretty obvious choices:

from the ladies......Mitty Collier "my party" chess

from the gents.......Walter Jackson "after you there can be nothing" okeh
