JOE TORQUAY Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Gene Mcdaniels Walk With A Winner Firmly perched in the top of the five greatest “last Records” ever spun at Northern Soul venues. Jack Nitzsche swells his reputation with an arrangement to compliment Mr. McDaniels booming vocal - as Joe Saraceno production mushrooms into a mountain of soul. An inspiring NS classic of monumental proportions…that requires very little gloss from us… Except to say as the 1965 British press in fine clean condition still snuggled inside it’s birth sleeve - is a prize to behold. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 120.00 Home Of The Blues Edition 2 June 1966 RARE June 1966 22 page edition TWO in the series that laid the foundations for the Soul institution that was Blues & Soul. Includes live soul act reviews at the TILES CLUB, London ALVIN ROBINSON - April 22, John Lee Hooker May 5 June & July acts due to appear @ “The Tiles” - Roy C, Billy Stewart, Norma Tanega, Orlons, Rufus Thomas, Crystals, Joe Tex & Solomon Burke etc. what an insight into the burgeoning British Soul scene of 1966. Articles inside cover pics and bio’s on John Lee Hooker, Lee Dorsey, Sugar Pie deSanto, Alvin Robinson with back cover b/white stage pic. Patty LaBelle and the Bluebells, Drifters. Top 50 USA R&B singles chart. New release reviews of British & USA singles. A menu of who’s playing live in the UK + a special feature on Johnny Cash as his vocal was considered so soulful in the days before the soul police became active. Rare in the extreme as this primitive embryo for Blues & soul had such a low distribution level in 1966. We did auction a copy in February 1012 this copy is is far finer condition with only the seam fixing staples giving a clue to it 46 years of age. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 129.00 Jeff Adams From The Beginning When I first heard Al McCarther “His True Love For You” I just fell into an abyss of joy. Not heard this seriously rare record in quite a while - and it’s just had exactly the same effect on me. As the sound of BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN postings reach fever pitch on Facebook - I consider this 45 as the stand-out listing. Stupidly rare and as a last record for a DJ set, this will elevate the jock to Stand-out status also. Listen and fall into my abyss…. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 229.00 Duke And Leonard Just Do The Best You Can The super slick verbal-volleyball performance from Duke & Leonard is mobilized by tapestry of brass and piano. The combination of the partnering horns with a Sam & Dave style vocal arrangement creates a compelling dancer that has sat for decades on the cusp of Northern Soul approval. Hindered over the years from lack of exposure, but at last, the combination of the internet and recent DJ spins at last this 45 reputation is growing and growing fast. It’s just proper Northern that has sat on the back-burner for too long… watch this rise to it’s rightful level. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 133.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted October 31, 2012 Author Posted October 31, 2012 Herman Lewis Who's Kissing You Tonight C/w Right Direction A DETROIT MASTERPIECE! Sculptured by the artistry J. J. Barnes & Herman Griffin. Elusive in the extreme, this is consummate Northern Soul at it most irresistible! Click the soundfle and be prepared for emotions to ripple into waves… PS the flip ain’t half bad too… Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 1,363.00 Billy Larkin And The Delegates Kola Shanah C/w Funky Fire Innovative funk infused jazz from the prodigious hammond hero Billy Larkin with his long term backing band The Delegates. A master of the keyboards weaves his way through a meaty down-beat groove that you find creeping under your skin the mix of the twangy guitar, sultry sax and whirling hammond blend the base for a sensual vocal to occasional embroider the session. Very different and contagious… Flip again sits right outside the box, with Billy’s pedestrian snarl spitting out the lyrics throughout a similar constructed arrangement that screams avant-garde. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 51.00 J. J. Barnes Our Love Is In The Pocket C/w All Your Goodies Are Gone The far rarer and far more attractive multi-coloured Revilot release. Killer version of the Darrell Banks classic Northern Soul anthem with the same signature intro of the simplistic deep piano notes, colliding with jingling vibes; then J.J.’s pleading “Our Love” shout - then he brilliantly takes it down a key to a mellower more considered delivery. Every line prompted by Mike Terry’s baritone sax and bewitching girl-group chorus, then that iconic Sax-break from the Sax-God. Is LeBaron Taylor finished his layer upon layer production, no he hasn’t, towards the end a male-vocal group (Parliaments) add a dash of variety with a chorus or two. Let’s be honest, the skill of making records of this calibre is no a long-lost art. A Motor City “Chippendale” that could never be replicated… but could be a lesson to future producers on how much care and imagination went into these 60’s Detroit delights. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 230.00 Preston Peters ? You Can't Measure Your Love ? The rare miss-press that should be “Preston Peters” “You Can’t Measure Your Love” matrix WBAC 101. but pressed with a mysterious sax propelled Northern Soul thumper matrix WBAC 100B I personally have no idea who the artist or the title really is - what I do know for certain is, this is an all-powerful slab of Northern Soul that grabs you by the balls and shakes them up! An insane saxophone, prompting piano driven rhythm craft the platform for a breathless vocal to pant out the instructions for dance. I think it may be entitled “Don’t You Do Nothing - You don’t want No one to catch ya doin’” Totally manic Northern Soul - that’ will invade your head and claim squatters rights, infectious in the extreme. I love strange miss-presses,and they don’t come any better or more mysterious that this one.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 161.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted October 31, 2012 Author Posted October 31, 2012 Rising Sun Let Me Into Your Heart C/w You're Never Too Old To Learn The 45 has lived in the shadows of “Good Loving” for way too long. Go check out this deliciously soulful Miami vocal group stepper from 1972. A magnificent mood-changing slice of real-soul with meaningful lyrics and an almost harrowing arrangement, using Angel-like girl choir and a male rap “conscience” trying to guide him through his foolish unrequited love. This has fast become my favourite record of the year. Flip it over for an explosive upbeat pre-disco dance experience. You know when Clarence Reid, Willie Clarke & Arnold Albury go to work something special is going to be born. Two great but contrasting sides that will definitely have their day. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 88.00 Tempests Would You Believe Inc: Someday We all just adore Carolinas 60s Soul and this highly desirable 1967 USA lp just spews it out. This example is a rare Promo copy still retains the original inner-company sleeve. So very sought-after lp that is just littered with stunning Northern Soul tracks, of which we have chosen the title track and two non-45 cuts to sound file.Would You BelieveAin’t No Big ThingSomeday This is just a taster of what this Charlotte, North Carolina conceived album offers. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 222.00 Anna Belle Caesar With Lionel Hampton Little Annie + 3 Complete with picture and inner sleeve - original post card and laminated picture cover comes this stunningly attractive 1964 Spanish French EP that includes that robust-R&B-Romp from Anna Belle Caesar. Miss Caesar gives a qualified lesson in how to rock the house! Bongos, double bass, insane piano work prompting Anna Belle to rip into a hipshaking R&B production. Then the king of the vibes Lionel Hampton steps in for a xylophone solo, superb & utterly irresistible! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 174.00 Cookie Scott & The Chevelles I Don't Care C/w Misled After listening to the soundfile, it will leave you in no doubt why this 45 is a double-sider of huge repute. There is nothing more captivating than a pleading girl vocal to solicit your heart and mind’s attention. The blend of strings, horns and girl group chorus lays the platform to Cookie Scott to deliver a down on her knees performance of distilled soul, which only the Ivory’s on Despenza matches. A record that you be unable to put down - a perpetual stylus hugger that gives up two sides of purely innocent soul, woven into a precise Northern soul production. Miss this and live in regret.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 436.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted October 31, 2012 Author Posted October 31, 2012 Contours Don't Let Her Be Your Baby C/w It Must Be Love After the very minor British success of the Contours first UK release “Do You Love Me” was not mirrored by their second release “Shake Sherry”. So by the time the group’s third and final Oriole 45 came to market, the Contours were a forgotten, passed over group. Before you today is that 3rd & rarest Oriole release in just impeccable condition. Flawless in every respect, and vinyl only revealing the lightest of sleeve-brush blemishes under strong light, labels as you can see are also unblemished. We do not believe a finer copy will come to market - so this again is a must-grab offering for the discerning Brit-Motown collector / up-grader. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 79.00 Homesick James Set A Date C/w Can't Afford To Do It There is no mathematical process to follow - but do consider, what are the chances of encountering a seriously rare UK SUE 45 in STONE-MINT condition in late 2012 ? This listing is for the most-discerning of British vinyl collectors for seek the impossible conditions to fit into their label run. This double-helping of 1965 R&B is just that; pristine, beyond-rare and impossible in this state. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 50.00
