Alan Walls Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 In the wake of Terry Callier's sad passing, a mate - not a soulie - has asked if I know of another version, mid 70's vibe? He has it on an old, anonymous tape and it's doing his head in! Any suggestions? Ta!
Peter99 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Mentioned this on a radio show earlier Alan. I have this on the Turn You to Love album and think that is the version which used to get plays back in the day. But, there are other versions - I think there are at least two more but don't know the detail. Not much help is it - doh! I think one might be an accoustic take. Be interested to hear other answers. Peter
Peter99 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Jerry Butler steve Oops, might have read the original post wrongly - sorry. It's the rum. Peter 1
Dennisoul Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 The 3 versions I know Alan are....2 by Terry Callier, one slower version by TC on 45 and the LP uptempo one that Mark Linton used to play....and there's a version by Jerry Butler which is the same pace as the TC version on 45

boba Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 here's jerry Butler's take, if you want to check it? here's Jerry Butler's take if you want to check it steve weird, it's been philly-tized overall this is a very obscure track wrt mainstream r&b so it's not something like "ain't no sunshine" where there would be a million covers 1
Cover-up Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Lonette McKee-DoTo Me utilizes "Ordinary Joe". I've never really got this, to be honest...
boba Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Lonette McKee-DoTo Me utilizes "Ordinary Joe". what does "utilizes ordinary joe" mean? overall the song is reminiscent of ordinary joe, or are you saying something more specific? thanks.
Peter99 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Lonette McKee-DoTo Me utilizes "Ordinary Joe". Doesn't it just - don't know that either! Life long learning. Peter
Dave Pinch Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 the jasmine kara version is only a couple of years old. i heard it recently in zara`s shop on oxford street.. incidentally although TC wrote the song jerry butler is the original

boba Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 incidentally although TC wrote the song jerry butler is the original i didn't know that, although it makes sense. very glad that callier re-cut it, probably sounded similar to his demo, with a little backing added. butler's version isn't really memorable.
Popular Post Dave Pinch Posted October 30, 2012 Popular Post Posted October 30, 2012 what does "utilizes ordinary joe" mean? overall the song is reminiscent of ordinary joe, or are you saying something more specific? thanks. yes `reminicent of` bob.. some say it has the same backing but they are the cloth ear`d types 7
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I've never really got this, to be honest... BBB technique to sell a £10 record for £10 it also sounds like The Magnetics Lady In Green. I have a copy for sale........ 1
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 (edited) Intersting the jerry butler version, good but TC hammers it home. Edited October 30, 2012 by Prophonics 2029 2
Russ Vickers Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 jasmine kara sucks the soul outta it, but would have been good for TC to get some royalties...insipid. Best Russ 3

Shinehead Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Love Terrys version and Jerry is a great fave of mine but on his version he just seems to be going through the motions where as Terry seems to feel it.
Guest phillybuster Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Lonette McKee-DoTo Me utilizes "Ordinary Joe". It means make practical use of.

Garethx Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Lp version best version by miles It's on two albums: Occasional Rain (Cadet) and Turn You To Love (Elektra).
Sutty Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Are you lot on something? There's no way that the Elektra version is better than the Cadet version! Lol 1
Dean Rudland Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I like the Elektra version because it was the one I heard first, but the Cadet version is just sublime, one of the greatest soul records ever.
Russ Vickers Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I like both, but prefer the Elektra, all a matter of personal taste really... Best Russ
Russ Vickers Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Mmmmmm been awhile since I have listened to them back to back....I think Im liking both equally in different ways ! Russ

Guest ScooterNik Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Jasmine Kara is a lass living in New York of Scandanavian upbringing and Iranian descent. She's obviously got a passion for soul music - her album is full of it. (god, did that sound like a blurb or what?) It was produced by Marshall Chess, a name I'm sure you're all familiar with, and was released in this country on Acid Jazz about a year ago, I got lucky and was sent a promo copy for review. Great album, if a touch on the R&B side.
