Saw him around 1972 when he was at his very best, then again in the early 90's when he did a gospel set; awesome. I've heard he's now singing some of the old hits again, so he'd be top of my list. Well, I'll never get to see Otis or Jackie....

And even more sad is that I'll never see the now late Edwin Starr again - he was breathtaking. He was unbelievable, just made the hairs on your neck stand up.

He was brilliant, and while we're at Yarmouth who saw the Four Tops when they played there (1980?), full orchestra, the works. Clay Hammond at Utrecht A++ Dells A++++ Would love to see Jerry Butler, but apparently he doesn't like flying, lets have a whip round and book him on the QE2 Tony

Mark Bicknell Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 On a more serious note rather than my 'Mud' comments...lol i think the best two live shows i've seen have to be both on their home turf in a couple of small Blues clubs in Chicago were Jimmy Burns and Otis Clay, must have been about 100 people at the Otis Gig and a few more at Jimmy's show, not on the same night i might add. Closely followed by Jr Walker at the Playhouse Theatre in Edinburgh about 15 years back,He walked on stage with no backing band,walked straight up to the mic.Saxaphone in hand and ordered the words " "JUNIORS BAD,cause I`m a road runner " It`ll stay with me till I drop and there were only about 40 of us in the audience.AWESOME!!!!! Carl Yes I saw Curtis Mayfield @ Dingwalls he was very very good & in a small club like that.... it was just before they knocked Dingwalls down & rebuilt it....I saw Jackie Wilson @ Wigan 14th June 1975, sadly he wasn't on top form & think it was one of the last performances he did before he slipped away.... It was awe-inspiring to be in the same small room as a legend. Ditto when Sam Dees played there (although seeing SD live was always quite problematic for me, as I always got the impression he detested performing live). Saw Al Green at Hammersmith Odeon in the early to mid 90s, and he was everything you could expect him to be, a wonderful vocal talent and a master showman with tons of natural charisma. Anita Baker, too, at the same venue on her first visit to Britain in the 80s was a phenomenally intense performer, far, far removed from her coffee-table incarnation of later years. I can still hear her earth-shattering rendition of You Got To Feel The Need In Me which genuinely thrilled and moved. Mark Bicknell mentions Otis Clay and I must state that he is pretty much the last of a dying breed, a straight down the line, all action, no-frills, blue-collar, real soul man, and an absolutely dynamite vocalist with a fantastic grasp of the dynamics of live performance. Seeing him you really could be transported to his roots in the hell-fire gospel tradition. Quite simply, he's awesome and I would urge anyone who can to see him while you still have the chance. Andy Dyson made the point here a few months ago that many of the soul greats are now operating on half-power due to advancing years, but went on to say this is not the case with OC. How true that is.

Absolutely and similarly I saw Gene Chandler at Dingwalls can't remember the date but it was refreshing to see hime in a small intimate place where you could actually see and feel him sing - as opposed to a raucous soul clapping kind of gig. (Not knocking the latter each has its place)

Temps Carla Thomas Stevie Wonder in 71 Bill Withers at the CIS Jnr Walker Jimmy Ruffin Jimmy Helms prior to his hits Steinways in Nelson, thinking they were the Drifters! Plus all the usual at the Casino, Tommy Hunt, Jnr again, Betty Wright etc.etc. Who would I like to see most. Believe this or not, I never saw Diana and the Supremes. Would love to see them doing a Motown spot, without the schmaltzy show records. Awesome! Saw the Funk Bros at the Apollo in Mancland last year. Unforgettable!!!!

Never went tho' can't remember what happened or even if the gig took place.........too many years! i also went to the odeon to see billy paul,ojays and intruders.the ojays and intruders were truly brilliant,but it was billy pauls birthday,allegedly,and he was absolutely hammered or chemically enhanced or just very very confused.cant remember the year.

I know he's old etc etc but expected a bit more than that for my £30!! Didn't do half the stuff I was hoping he would either - nothing off his new album at the time either

Also the Jam .. saw them in '85 too at Bingley Hall, Stafford ... fabbie!! Guest Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I saw Al Green live in Connecticut a couple years ago, and he puts on an absolutely stunning show. All the old material is back, his voice is in stellar shape and even the little bit of new material he did was great. They needed casino security to keep the women at the front (all in their 50s and 60s I might add) from crawling on the stage...they all wanted a piece of Reverend Al I would go to see him again at any opportunity.
