I have several 45s which have cracks in them, some all way across and other just on edge, e.g. You Don't Love Me - Moses Smith on Sandbag, Cool Off on Musicor (I think) and one or two others.

Can they be repaired and if so is it worth it ?

Any suggestions ?

Moses Smith is a bootleg on Sandbag so chuck it away, it's not worth anything in that format as it's recorded at 48rpm!

Cool Off is on the Pameline label, orange reissue, green first issue, if it's either of those, it's worth repairing.

If the crack snaps in so it's aligned exactly on both sides ("tight crack") you can stabilize it by heating up a fork or something similar and burning a small dent into the outer wax where the two sides of the crack connect. It fuses the vinyl or styrene together so the crack becomes sort of an "inner crack". It's still easy to split it again accidentally or on purpose, but you have to actually apply some pressure to do so so it's less likely to be accidental.

ive got a couple ot records that are cracked and been 'repaired' one by heating and one just a piece of sellotape...both play ok with only the smallest occasional click...have to be careful when putting on and taking off turntable ...although i rarely play either anyway so maybe thats why theyve lasted years in that condition

:hatsoff2: HI ALL....Why do you collect records? if like me, your collection gets plenty of play, and as collector you have the BUG, then you will be a regular buyer of records, week in & week out, Many collectors who have the top rare records, have achieved this buy buying & selling there prize dusties at a time they were at the peak, and invested in records that had yet to get big, these collectors are the best resource for getting rare records with imperfections, as trying to collect mint condition records 40 years old would be an impossible venture,

In today's market their are those people who will only buy records in ex or better condition, as they view that in the long term they were investing for the future, (The truth of the matter they have already missed the boat, by 4 years?)

As a collector who buys records for personal enjoyment, I will consider any record for my collection, as long as I can restore it to play, and as such over the years many rare records with hairline cracks I have obtained cheap, the same goes for UK Records with NOC if it ain't in my collection I will buy it, and upgrade it over a period of time.

Keith said he will find a home for it, I'm sure he will, as he knows that a collector will purchase it exists somewhere? :g:

 DAVE K

thanks Pete, seem to know your stuff, I have (not cracked) Sapphires Big Thing on what looks like a UK re-issue backed with Eddie Reagan - is that one for the bin too ??

Yeah I'd bin that one, it's worth less than a tenner and you can easily replace that.

Which reminds me, I got asked for that yesterday, better get onto it..

this is the amazing thing about the Northern Soul scene...fans fall into two camps

1. Some folk it's about whether it's a great danceable record that gives you goosebumps and memories come flooding back

2. Others, if it's not original or worth £50 plus it's not worth playing, throw it in bin or use as a coaster

I belong in former group

Sometime ago, a friend of mine (from the soul scene) had cancer and due to the care he received wanted to raise funds for unit that cared for him, he asked for suggestions and i said contact all these collectors that think certain records are worthless and ask if they'll donate them to the cause, i donated about 50 and quite a few others followed suit. Some of the "rubbish" went for decent money e.g. Dean Courtney RCA £25, in fairly short space of time he'd raised over a grand

Moral is...one man's rubbish is another mans treasure
