Mark III - Should I Belive You / Anyway - Quality

Looking for additional information and pricing regarding this 45.

As far as I'm aware, the (canadian) Quality issue of this record was the first pressing of 'Should I Believe You', which was then later licensed to the US label, Stop. Both 45s have different flip sides, 'Anyway' (on Quality) is an uptempo northern track, similar to that of it's A-side, whereas the Stop release has a sweet soul side. I also believe the 'Anyway' track is only available on the Quality flip?

'Should I Believe You' used to be the Prophonics c/u by Guy, although is anyone familiar with the 'Anyway' track being played out? I cannot find any mention of it online in playlists or sound files.

With regards to value, I heard that the Stop release has fetched £1000, and possibly £1500 in auction? Where I've come across value of the Quality 45 online, it seems to be of lesser value. I'm wondering why, because this is the first pressing of the A-side, has an equally as appealing flip and also is more elusive than the Stop issue. Is it that the track 'Anyway' hasn't had it's day?

I've attached scans & sound files. I'd really appreciate any information you have on this one!

This one was sold 2 months later, price is all over the place...

This is the Stop release though, the 45 that I have is the Quality release and would like find out bit more about that if possible. Pomonkey had the last copy for sale, which I believe used to be 'mark.b's', so it doesn't seem like there's many floating around.

Hello mate,

Although the Quality release is rarer I don't think either of them are worth anywhere near £1k, not in terms of rarity but desirability. I think these are inflated prices that seem to have happened largely on UK dealers sites. Realistic price on either would be £300 odd I would of thought. Also, although you have two dance sides on the Quality one, the US release's sweet flip perhaps carries some weight with those collectors? That might be way prices are similar on both.

Personally I think it's a great 45 but maybe the dancers don't agree? The 'Anyway' side might be more appealing on listening to it again - 'SIBY' has a very tricky beat - the few times i've played it you often get the great shufflers doing their thing to it.

As for the stop label, Athen Rogues, Endeavours and Berkshire Seven all make me think it is a gen 60's - early 70's label - maybe someone can shed more light on it? Nashville, Tennessee according to label.

There are 300+ releases on the Stop label. It was indeed from Nashville, TN. Active from 1966-ish to 1971 or 1972. Lots and lots of country releases, but also a great funk 45 by James Fountain.

Wowsers didn't know it was that prolific. This would account for the Stop release being easier to find then perhaps? Active years make sense for the type of soul issued on it. Cheers Sebastian. :)

This is one of the labels I'm briefly looking at for some book research on the south eastern states. Pete Drake owned the label, his claim to fame was a steel guitar player, played on Tammy Wynette's 'Stand by your man' and played on Elvis' How Great thou Art' LP. Stop Recs was kind of sold / became incorporated into Nashville's Gusto records in the early 70s, which now has the back catalogue of loads of labels like King, Federal etc. Theres maybe only 4ish tracks of some interest to soulies from what I can see, most have been mentioned here. There was some female thing on it (Joyce somebody?) but not sure if any good.

Thanks for the responses lads, wasn't trying to over inflate the price here but was a tricky one to put a price tag to. Genuinely interested by the Quality release though as I couldn't seem to find that much info about it but every little bit adds to the story!

I sold mine privately earlier this year, as think may have posted previously, when was chatting to Martin Koppel in Toronto a couple of years ago - a man who definitely knows more than most about Canadian soul releases - he'd never had one in all his time there so have to believe it's genuinely rare whatever the price gets put on it.

I sold a VG+ copy on Quality to a member on here for £350

Hope that helps
