Tony Turner Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I am interested to know about the history of this record on the scene. When was it discovered, first played, by whom, when did it go big and any other interesting facts. I know Mal C has an Aussie copy, was it released in any other countries. Thanks in advance TT PS are there any other versions of this tune? 1
Roburt Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 (edited) This youtube clip of Zoot Money's Big Roll Band doing the song says that Percy Mayfield did the 1st version in 1960 ... Zoot first cut a version of this back in 1966 >> Zoot Money's Big Roll Band "Ž— 'Were You There? Live 1966' Edited September 28, 2012 by Roburt
Pauldonnelly Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I first heard this at the Bletsoe all-nighter back end of 1972...I remember it well as one of the older lads suggested he knew a version by Ray Charles...it could have been an late day Wheel spin..
Kris Holmes Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Is this not just a common oldie? I've always just thought it was one of those 45s which has always been around from speaking to more "experienced" DJs than myself.
Roburt Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Well, as Zoot Money was doing the song in the mid 60's, it was a 'mod' tune back then. Mind you, I was a mod then as well.... AND ..... I never knew of the Earl Grant version. Don't forget that back in the mid 60's, we were still busy chasing UK 45's & US imports were quite exotic items (unless you were from Liverpool or a similar port).
Guest Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 (edited) Tremendous track...superb production. It also came out on Japanese Decca which is painfully rare. (Ray Charles is on Japanese A.B.C.) Edited September 30, 2012 by Flynny 1

Ernie Andrews Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 I have it on a Spanish Tri centre 2
Kegsy Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 (edited) I would have thought this was first played at the Torch late 72/early73 ? Probably Alan Day or Keith Minshull. Just as easily it could have been the Cats or Mecca. kegsy Edited September 30, 2012 by Kegsy
Mal C Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 (edited) Here's the Aussie Issue on Blue Festival... Bit of a bargin this, I was at the Paramatta Record fair and bought 20 or so other Aussie releases, so took a look in the crap bin below this chaps table and low an behold in mint condition, probably never played and in a mint cond sleeve...for the princely sum of 2 Aud....80p is it.... I'm told this is pretty rare on Aussie release, I've not seen another since I got this in 2004. Mal.C Edited October 27, 2012 by Mal.C. 1
Mal C Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 (edited) I know this is off topic, but here's two other nice Aussie stateside releases I got recently... M Edited October 27, 2012 by Mal.C.
Pete S Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 I sold a Spanish tri-centre last year, I think it may have been promo only.
Kris Holmes Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 i haven't seen that Australian Earl Grant before, wonder if there is a New Zealand press?
