Popular Post Irish Spinner Posted September 26, 2012 Popular Post Posted September 26, 2012 As the time soon approaches for demolishment of the buildings on Whitworth St & London Rd, Manchester, to make way for a hotel. No4 Whitworth St, home to The Twisted Wheel Club will be the saddest loss of all. Known as the birth place of Soul in the UK. Here is a link to the artists that played the club from both Brazennose & Whitworth St along with a few of the play lists from both venues. https://manchestersoul.co.uk/TWheel/index.html Irish Spinner 4
JOE TORQUAY Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I STILL THINK IF THE WHEEL HAD STAYED OPEN THROUGH THE 70s IT WOULD HAVE KEPT IT'S NO1 SOUL CLUB IN THE WORLD TITLE ( DISCUSS ) JOE.
Pete S Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I love those early playlists, John Zacherle "Dinner With Drac", who would have thought? But I suppose it's in the same vein as the likes of Screaming Jay Hawkins. Thanks for posting those, great stuff.
Geeselad Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 really good insight into what was played @ the brazenose st venue, for me, thanks.
bri phill Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 (edited) Great stuff a few correction on the first link Brian Smith was the photographer,Ollie Ollerton DJ'd 67/68 and Rob Bellars never DJ'd he shared a collection with Phil Saxe. For anyone who might be interested. Not read the other stuff but Playlists will always miss a lot of tunes out but will show a great diversity in the early years Edited September 27, 2012 by bri. phill 1
Geoff Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Those early Twisted Wheel playlists are interesting as they are very similar to the tunes played at London clubs like the Scene from 1963 onwards when there was a preponderance of rhythm and blues played that gradually led on to soul as we define it now. 1
Anais nin Carms Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 (edited) Spot on Geoff , when I have spoken to Brian about it he recalls Brazenose street as being more about an appreciation for those moody bluesy type sounds for example Sonny Boy Williamson Help me. It now all makes sense he and his pals had this infatuation with the George Raft look guys were so smart in the early 70's carrying this look of long overcoats parallel trousers/suits ,ties , button down shirts and those cut off v neck sweaters. Brolly was king along with well polished oxfords. The sight of a group of lads dressed this way was a sight to behold I recall razor partings too. I think I think I may have Brian's passport picture 1970 where you can clearly see a college boy look, see if i can dig it out and post it up. Edited October 1, 2012 by Anais nin 1
