Garethx Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 Anyone got an issue copy of Stemmons Express "Woman, Love Thief" on Wand. Looking on popsike all copies listed there seem to be demos with black type. Neither the Wand demo or the local issue on Karma list a writer. Does the issue? A scan would be nice.
Dave Pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 how did those backing tracks end up in dallas...i dont think ive ever seen a wand issue
John Reed Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) Although not from the Wand demo or Karma singles, it looks like the Kent LP Dancing 'Til Dawn credits Ashford & Armsted as writers. Edited September 20, 2012 by John Reed
Dave Pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) has anybody notice the two karma variations..blue text with correct spelling ( love power) and black text with incorrect spelling ( love tower) Edited September 20, 2012 by dave pinch
Jim G Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 on popsike https://www.popsike.com/THE-STEMMONS-EXPRESS-WOMAN-LOVE-THIEF-NORTHERN-SOUL-Hear/251122267950.html
Pete S Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Although not from the Wand demo or Karma singles, it looks like the Kent LP Dancing 'Til Dawn credits Ashford & Armsted as writers. Well they wrote the B side so there's a chance they wrote the A as well..
TOAD Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 only sam coplin is credited on the wand demo (both sides)
Steve G Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) Sam bought the backing tracks after the record had been used for The Precisions "Such misery". Was discussing this with dave Thorley and probably George McGregor sold it. Ashford & Simpson were at Motown long before Stemmons was done, so doubt very much that they had a hand in it at all as they'd left FloMar. Also it's a Dallas record. I am in contact with Sam, I'll ask him. Edited September 20, 2012 by Steve G 2
John Reed Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Ashford & Simpson Steve I'm confused, where do these fit in?
Dave Pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 i thought it was dallas....jm said houston in his sales pitch... the stemmons expressway..was that where kennedy was shot
Dave Pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 i think maybe steve g is right..sam coplin got the tracks from george mcgregor..how i dont know. as for writing the tunes were probaby writen by sam or even the band members. dont think its anything to do with ashford simpson or armstead. i`m willing to be proved wrong tho take a look at these https://www.popsike.com/RARE-NORTHERN-SOUL-45-STEMMONS-EXPRESS-KARMA-201/200071886354.html https://www.popsike.com/Stemmons-Express-45-Love-Power-Rare-Pressing-Northern-Soul-Vinyl-Record/300631172726.html
boba Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 this is the copyright entry which shows the writers. obviously they falsely claimed music / arrangement, or maybe it was copyrighted with some other music originally. LOVE POWER; w & arr. Scott McKay, m Tom Story. 2 p. © Sam Coplin, d.b.a. Sam Coplin Music; 19Jun68; EU59478. 1
Steve G Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) They were one of Sam's groups - def Dallas not Houston. Sam's office was on Stemmons Freeway (and I have also been there which is a main drag out of Dallas) and I am hoping to get a photo via his long term partner. Mr Stemmons was a founding father that built parts of Dallas up b.t.w hence a road named after him. John - The Kent LP names A&S as writers - but Dave and myself are saying highly unlikely. John Reed Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 John - The Kent LP names A&S as writers - but Dave and myself are saying highly unlikely. Of course.... I can be such a dumb f*ck sometimes
bri pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) for a wand issue, who knows as i personally, have never seen one...bit like i never seen an ivories demo would say a couple of hundred for a karma copy and a ton and half for a wand demo. Edited September 20, 2012 by bri pinch 1

Steve G Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Yes he moved from there in 68 Gareth. He also sued John lennon over the use of the name Karma which he claimed was his own.
Dave Pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 (edited) could it be that the wand issue was cancelled/ withdrawn due to whatever Edited September 20, 2012 by dave pinch
kevinsoulman Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Of course.... I can be such a dumb f*ck sometimes surely it says ashford and armstead two totally or four different writers
Dave Pinch Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 surely it says ashford and armstead two totally or four different writers on the original 45s it doesnt say any writers...... only on the bootlegs and lps just guess work on their part
Kris Holmes Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Kent maybe just pulled "A. Ashford" off of the Precisions label & assumed it applied to the Stemmons Express track too? Anyone's guess really.
George G Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Sam bought the backing tracks after the record had been used for The Precisions "Such misery". I am in contact with Sam, I'll ask him. Hi Steve....Was Sam behind the Karma label or just the Stemmons 45? The reason being that I don't know if the mystery behind how the Sincerly San Jose 45 on Karma got released...would be interesting to me, thanks!
Steve G Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Hi george, yes Karma was Sam's label and he was behind all the releases on it. Sam's partner has promised to come back to me with detail before the end of the month. Steve
