Anyone got an issue copy of Stemmons Express "Woman, Love Thief" on Wand. Looking on popsike all copies listed there seem to be demos with black type.

Neither the Wand demo or the local issue on Karma list a writer. Does the issue? A scan would be nice.

Although not from the Wand demo or Karma singles, it looks like the Kent LP Dancing 'Til Dawn credits Ashford & Armsted as writers.

Well they wrote the B side so there's a chance they wrote the A as well..

Sam bought the backing tracks after the record had been used for The Precisions "Such misery". Was discussing this with dave Thorley and probably George McGregor sold it. Ashford & Simpson were at Motown long before Stemmons was done, so doubt very much that they had a hand in it at all as they'd left FloMar. Also it's a Dallas record. I am in contact with Sam, I'll ask him.

i think maybe steve g is right..sam coplin got the tracks from george mcgregor..how i dont know. as for writing the tunes were probaby writen by sam or even the band members. dont think its anything to do with ashford simpson or armstead. i`m willing to be proved wrong tho

They were one of Sam's groups - def Dallas not Houston. Sam's office was on Stemmons Freeway (and I have also been there which is a main drag out of Dallas) and I am hoping to get a photo via his long term partner. Mr Stemmons was a founding father that built parts of Dallas up b.t.w hence a road named after him.

John - The Kent LP names A&S as writers - but Dave and myself are saying highly unlikely.

Of course.... I can be such a dumb f*ck sometimes

for a wand issue, who knows as i personally, have never seen one...bit like i never seen an ivories demo

would say a couple of hundred for a karma copy and a ton and half for a wand demo.

Was it raining on Sept 8th 1964, my birth day Gareth?

Yes he moved from there in 68 Gareth. He also sued John lennon over the use of the name Karma which he claimed was his own.

on the original 45s it doesnt say any writers...... only on the bootlegs and lps just guess work on their part

Kent maybe just pulled "A. Ashford" off of the Precisions label & assumed it applied to the Stemmons Express track too? Anyone's guess really.

Hi Steve....Was Sam behind the Karma label or just the Stemmons 45? The reason being that I don't know if the mystery behind how the Sincerly San Jose 45 on Karma got released...would be interesting to me, thanks!

Hi george, yes Karma was Sam's label and he was behind all the releases on it. Sam's partner has promised to come back to me with detail before the end of the month. Steve
