Guest manusf3a Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I have had the bad fortune to experience this on a couple of occasions, and the good fortune that in over 30 years of attending it has been very rare. In each occasion i can attribute a common demoninator of the culprits being well oiled, and also not a massive aficionado of soul music as a genre (i know this for a fact as i know them) I tend to go more for nighters now, Radcliffe etc, and Mr Bicknell's inaugral Bury one, as, even with the late bar, i think most pissheads wouldn't go out ther way to pay £10-12 to stay up all night in a venue playing music they didn't know or particularly like, and where the opposite sex aren't aprticularly interested in 'getting to grips' with them on the dancefloor. Although I am a hippy at heart and non-confrontational, i am of a size and ability to defend myself (i hope) even though my best days are behind me, i worked the doors for a few years in the 80's and this ilk are nothing new to me, a good % of my social circuit may be classed as 'social handgrenades', they're not the crowd i socialise with (or would want to accompany me) to Soul nights/nighters. I really hope common sense prevails, i had 7 pints at the last nighter i attended, yet would still be affable and courteous to everyone i encountered, it's the individual that has the problem, not a few pints of grog. Sorry to hear these reports, hope they remain the exception, and that the individuals can be 'locally banned' - they donlt sound like the sort who would travel 100+ miles to a venue, so hopefully will soon be eradicated. Thanks for taking the time to read, not many subjects get me animated enough to post, but this one did..... I would imagine it would be local trouble makers doing the lions share of the fighting and other abusive stuff as folk have sid tempted in by the four o clock bar, surely most of these wouldnt be hard to spot when they turn up looking to get in and can be turned away at the door just as they would be turned away from non soul clubs and pubs.Certainly is a dark cloud hovering over events where it takes place.
Guest gordon russell Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 The rise of the pisshead?well a recent thread concerning gear, speed and the northern scene has seen more than a couple of pro pisshead postings, one person stating he often turns up at all nighters well pissed, not saying he would be of the baroom blitz brigade in fact from his other postings I would say definately not. What though with licsenced bars at all nighters(unheard off in my day, starting era)what can you expect ,when pissheads move in more pissheads soon will follow as news of the late night drink! with women dancing on their own just waiting for a bloke to stagger over and dance with because all them other blokes are dancing on their own them women will be "gaggibg for real men(for real men read pissedup louts)to pull em! spreads among the local inebriated brigade. As we all know bunches of drunks will always find someone to fight even those nearest and dearest to them, how many "yus ma bestest eva pal yush is",ended up only minutes later being severly beaten to a pulp by the speaker of those words of endearment.I had read quite a bit of condemnation about gear, amphetamines that is at all nighters both of old and now, on the forums various threads but like it or not that very same drug use was one of the combining factors that made our scene such a great one.Sure there was violence at times and an edgy atmosphere that edginess adding not detracting but the fact pissheads were not welcomed allowed the cameradie and friendships to develop over the years whereas the demon drink would not imo allowed such to happen.Well if it goes to a majority non stimulant use and heavy pisshead contingement with all that that entails including the drunken brawls where would that leave "our thing",all nighter wise! dead in the water or should I say ocean of piss perhaps?. Will it be a case of "they are camped acroos the other side of the tiber, the raids and forays into the city only increase in frequency will they continue till rome herself falls in ruins? There were a number of cures of the short sharp shock variety back in the day for obnoxious agressive pissheads who intruded into the all nighter, those various cures were known as Larry Cog Snotty Wilky Fiat Mr Day and the manchestder contingement along with many others from a click to a clarkie with plenty more combination treatment patterns that would combine to cleanse an unwanted virus before it could spread, all done free of chargeAll types of interventions from a mild beating to a hospitilization dependent on the extent of obnoxiousness exhibited by the patient(violent pisshead)The main policy being to stop them before they get started.. Hey up mate .....you forgot robbo, terry tompson, paul roberts....and of course the legendary barry macky lol
Guest gordon russell Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 One of the main reasons is all these fellas who want to run oldies nighters....cause in the main thats where it happens.....they let anyone in keep the numbers up ect ect....smaller nighters which are frequented by the nighter crowd never have these problems p.s the trouble at glouster....was between a few local women would you believe
good angel Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 After 3,pints I just want to go to bed..Zzzzzzzzzzz not to fight Atb,Kev.
Spanner Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 they were banned for abusing you ,as you asked ,
Guest manusf3a Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 (edited) Hey up mate .....you forgot robbo, terry tompson, paul roberts....and of course the legendary barry macky lol No how could anyone forget them and others I just put a few names there as examples.Barry Mckay who according to Gav would go down with him to Millwall after the allnighter rattling with caps and pills as folk then did for an enjoyable days punching phoo ket out of opposing supporters then to make their way back home for Barry to spot and throw a grass through a chemist window in town and order him not to come out tiill he had all the dubes.Cant see any of them hesitating to fill in those whose presence was obnoxious in some way or other.Any agressive pissheads who ever confronted the likes of those lads soon realised they had started on the wrong person, thats after they regained consciousness of course.atb manus ps Id get keyboard cramp tezza if i had to list all of the night warriours that have made the scene so rich from the start and overtime, whose very prsence was also one of those ingredients that certain edginess, that came together at the right place and at the right time to make the magic, especialy those now passed on whose memories are cherished by those who knew them and those still here in whose memories they live on, hard as diamonds these lads, fucking right they were and they shone brighter. than any mere gem., Edited September 18, 2012 by manusf3a
Guest mickeyfish58 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I hate seeing pissheads (men & women) staggering around the dancefloor ! i just hate seeing pissheads full stop !!
Chalky Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 we've had very little trouble at Lifeline, one incident at Sheridans which was quickly dealt with and we had one being a nuisance on the dance floor with the girls some months back and he was removed. I spend much of the night watching from the balcony, Mick and Andy never far away and we have at least three security on duty. 2
Guest JIM BARRY Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 When we were running druffies in dukinfield a few years ago, a rfew of the club members of the rugby club who owned the club were allowed into our room from their bar, they took delight in trying to mimic the soulies dancing, while still drinking their pints, total knobs and piss heads ...because of the size of them nobody was foolish enough to complain in person....lasted about an hour and totally ruined the atmosphere of a good venue.
Guest drewid Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 me my brother and some mates was at the keighley niter back in the 8ts , it got stormed by some pissheads , police marias the lot turned up, ruined it everyone had to bugger off home at like 3 in the morning , thing was there was only a handful of them , but suppose nobody knew that at the time ,although i do believe one received a lovely right hander of ivor allen, and pat brady had to protect his wife doing a sterling job off it too i believe, killed it in keighley for any all niters after that though
Zed1 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Only to be expected given many venues are now little more than a teen disco for 50-somethings.. 3
Dazdakin Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I thought this thread was going to be about something else Laugh!! i just fell off my chair as soon as i seen the header i thought "no!!can't be...where??, i gotta feckin see this!!" Deflated now, pulling my pants back up!! 2

Guest giant Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 My wife was on the dancefloor some months ago when a fight broke out behind her and she ended up recieving a blow to the face which resulted in a swollen nose and bruising to her eyes. I won't name the guy responsible but he is known for being a nuisance on the dancefloor when trying to dance (especially in the North -East), let's just say that revenge will be sweet. We have now stopped attending any venues within the North-East area due to my wife not wanting to see the idiot in question. North-East have the biggest piss heads in the world its a fact

Guest daryl baldwin Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 (edited) although i agree with most of the posts about 'pissheads' on the northern soul scene, i want to put my point across because it's unfair on the promoters of the gloucester allnighter. the 'scuffle' was outside and away from the main building. it was a little misunderstanding and quickly sorted out. as i was the one who got walloped and didn't retaliate, i know the facts. it went no further and both parties made up. no fuss - no bother - and no bans. for people on here to assume that it was pissheads brawling on the floor isn't right. i've had a crap two days after the event because of the politics off the floor. for me it's all about the music and nothing else. i've not been involved in a fight for twenty plus years - older, wiser and it hurts. i have no plans to change my mind now. anyone who knows me will testify that it's not my style to cause upset for anyone. the night was bloody good. great music and great DJs as always. Guest gordon russell Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Venues make money on the bar.Sometimes i guess, enough to make the venue a profit. As for fighting at a nighter, not seen it. Has made me wonder though,if the fights are not just p*sshead outsiders - just clashes of personality, extra curricular activities,if you get my drift....... I would like to add i wasn't attracted here by the title. OH YES YOU WERE

ImberBoy Posted September 18, 2012 Author Posted September 18, 2012 OK Serious question: What, if anything, does a promoter do to assure potential punters that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated?
Guest SteveJohnston Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 OK Serious question: What, if anything, does a promoter do to assure potential punters that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated? I would imagine most all promoters of soul nights & nighters will agree policing the undesirables is no easy task, but once it as been controlled & the culprit or culprits removed & banned form the venue they should never be allowed to return imo. Spacehopper Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 would like to agree with daryl...glos was a top nite, didnt see the trouble but did hear there had been a bit...please dont let it keep you away from a great niter.. weve still got the best behaved music scene in the uk despite the odd drunken scuffle... the answer?..dont know to be honest...memberships keep twats away maybe but i have seen soulies fighting so might help but wont keep it away completely so far not had any trouble in 4 1/2 years at gogo children and we get allsorts in soulies, mods, skins, rockabillys, students and people who know f all about soul...less of these at out new venue as we are tucked out the way a bit... all end up gettin off on the buzz and having a good time...god knows what our secret is just hope it continues because along with drinks on the dancefloor and playing boots this a bad rep to get...hope i havnt talked anything up!! dean 1
Popular Post Ady Croasdell Posted September 18, 2012 Popular Post Posted September 18, 2012 OK Serious question: What, if anything, does a promoter do to assure potential punters that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated? It's very rare indeed and you just need to have the staff to deal with it. The fact there's about 50 blokes (and a few girls) in the dance with you who'll come to your aid should anyone take a swing at you gives you a bit of confidence too. The best scrap we had was before the bouncers had got there and a gang started on Roger Stewart who responded as did Pete Wid, Mick Smith and myself (possibly one or two others, Greety perhaps) and it was over with a favourable result in a couple of minutes. 4

I think the only fight i've ever seen down the 100club was when it kicked off with the Dmob lot and that fella got stabbed.. Apart from Bob swapping the odd punch.. Mainly at Piller.

Guest gordon russell Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 best one i,ve seen was fiac and co from derby against poke and co from grantham outside the cats, now that was a real humdinger....think little willy from wednesfied got stabbed in the leg and didn,t know til the morning (it wern,t life threatning lol).Again the smaller venues where music and nighter folk are more important usually run by promoters who generally know whos walking through the door..should be able to spot wrong uns at the door.....all you have to say is..."members only " job done

Sure they were mates with wassis name from Jo Boxers. All i remember was being outside trying to calm it down. Some fella they'd rucked with was in a doorway further down. I said don't go down there he's got a knife.. But he did and erm got cut.

ricticman Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 there's some funny clever witty comments on this thread, but there's a real serious question here surely. when Cathy and I tell none soulies what I do , they're genuineinly astonished that this sort of scene exists ; cos' they's love to be a part of something like it but are just scared of being out in the city centre / late at night / looking different / looking too old / scared of the violence etc etc. When I tell them it's MORE than 99% plus free of that sort of crap they're amazed. But I believe one of the key reasons we've got this scene is due to that statistic. Where I live now, I wouldn't dream of putting a soul night on that was basically in a town / city centre.........with all the problems of late night walk ups wanting a drink etc etc. Even if , as most good promoters would I hope, give anyone who can't play by the rules their money back and tell them to leave, it means that before you chuck them our they've usually abused and possibly spoilt the night for someone. It's something we need to get on top of and stay on top of ; it's one of the few possible potential causes of this entire scene being ended prematurely. Or perhaps more likely being shrunken down to a smaller 'safe ' scene where door security can more or less guarantee these issues don't arise. But that wouldn't look much like the scene that exists today and has survived so long. Sorry for going on at length. Just something that worries me a bit. pete lyster 1

The only trouble was finding enough DJ's with records to jock in the modern room, which was soon resolved - thanks to that nice lad from Dewsbury - Adam !!! Mr Pat Brady's involvement would come naturally as Pat has had a long history with boxing, both as a fighter in the ring and even being a boxing coach outside of the ring - back in his day. Geeselad Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 I've heard too many people say there put off city centre venues for exactly this reason, cc's tend to atract more agro in general, in my experience, but think its anythiong intrinsic, its just more likly you'd have thses clashes of culture where there's more folk about I sposse.
