hi everybody,

we already had topics about "rare lp tracks" a.s.o.

the 7" rules on the scene - no doubt...but a few "outlaws" did lp only sets in the past or are currently spinning 12"s ...

It would be interesting to see/read what these guys spin on niters and which ones are open minded enough for it.

Nowadays the 12" records are gettin' a bit more attention and are much more in-demand than they used to be on the scene back in the days...and to be honest: loads of brill choons out there that were missed in the past because of the northern protocol - imo!

Feel free to post your lp only playlists in here...btw. radio show playlists are also welcome.

Not sure if this topic will get much attention/posts, but let's give it a try...

To be honest: LPs are certainly much more interesting for x-over and modern tunes than for strictly northern ...

When I dj'd regularly I always took a bunch of LPs with me. Either lp-only tracks, or album tracks that were much much cheaper than the 45 releases, e.g. Silhouettes on Goodway. If I find the time I'll knock a list together of what I played over the years.

Silhouettes on Goodway

Apart from price, theres a significant difference between the LP and the 7". The 7" is much more puchier and IMO the LP version seems quite flat.

Sorry, not to my ears.

Not that ever had the original 45, but the album sounds so good I can't imagine it's inferior to the 45 press.

alternate takes...the other side of LPs...e.g. the smoother version of "Sweet Memories" by The New Sounds/Robert Tanner (sadly a crap recording on Turbo)...but a really nice version anyway!

Hi Matt, i think as a matter of course and because there is so much great LP (12") material that you should buy albums as readily as you (we) do 45's, i basically could care less if it's an LP or 45', all that counts is the song, i guess on a personal note i've tended to buy LP's where there is either one or several album only tracks, that aren't available as seven inch singles (including alternate, and in some cases superior longer takes ) This has never been a strategic move on my part...It just happened that way.

As for playlists....stand by me in Hamburg, at the all- dayer, i'll play plenty of album only tracks. Ps must add i'm not on the Northern soul scene, but just the 'Soul Scene'

Hope this is still in topic, but if I were to compile an LP-only playlist, it would look something like this:

2. THE METROS: I'll Never Forget You (US RCA - from "Sweetest One")

3. BOBBY BLAND: Sweet Lips Of Joy (US Duke - from "A Touch Of The Blues")

4. FREDA PAYNE: On Easy Street (US MGM - from "How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore")

5. THE TOYS: Deserted (US Dynovioce / UK Stateside - from "A Lovers Concerto")

6. TOMMY NAVARRO: I'm Comin' On Back (US Urania - from "Twist Around The Town")

7. DEE CLARK: I Love You Darling (US Abner / UK Top Rank - from "How About That")

8. THE MAGNIFICENT MEN: Keep On Climbing (US Capitol - from "The Magnificent Men")

9. THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS: It's Up To You (US / UK Verve - from "Souled Out")

10. ARCHIE BELL & THE DRELLS: A Thousand Wonders (US Atlantic - from "TIghten Up")

It's perfectly acceptable Matt to play the LP cut of 'Cry To Me'...because that is the superior and longer version than the 45' all 5 minutes 45 seconds of it compared to the 3 minutes 34 seconds of the Aware 45'.....You tell that Mike Lofthouse to come and see me after school has ended...

And you should go back to school and learn to read properly - Matt was not suggesting playing 'Cry To Me' but 'Casanova' from the 'Cry To Me' album :)

You also corrected him about 'I Can't Help Myself' - but you also mis-read that - he was suggesting it as an alternative to 'Casanova' and was saying 'tongue in cheek' was it on 45?

Supplement:

surely it's always more interesting to get a list together of lp-only tracks...but I decided, in this case, to ask people listing their playlists and I don't wanna neglect particular songs that are/were part of a set cause they were released on 45 as well, you know?!

But lp-only tracks are - for sure - always the most exciting point in threads like this!!

Especially the semi-knows, underplayed and cheapies - along with the classics and rare ones!

now it's your turn... :hatsoff2:

Great post Matt....glad someone is giving albums a bit of respect they deserve, as you know I only collect albums and don't own a 45, I dj occasionally and in my sets I tend to play a mix of album only, cover versions and underplayed.

Here's a mixed bag of album only tracks I've played out this year......

Martha Bass - Since I've Been Born Again - Checker.

Billy Hawks - O' Baby (I Believe In Losing You) - Prestige.....There is an acetate of this on 45... Mace has the honour of owning it.

Bobby Smith -A New Day Dawning - Bahamas Nationhood.

Ronnie Dyson - Fever - Columbia.

The O'Jays - Four For The Price Of One - mfp.

The Checkmates Ltd - Run Nigger Run - Rustic Records... (extended Lp version 6:45mins, far better than the 45.... imho).

Al Greene - Back Up Train - Action.

The Albert - One Life - Perception.

Tony Fox - Love, Let Love And Be Loved ... I Wanna Get Next To You - Blaster..... I know these came out on a blaster 45 but very rare.

Little Ann - Sweep It Out In The Shed - Timmion.

James Conwell - L.O.V.E. - Globe, (Hank Graham's own label).

New Sounds - Sweet Memories ...Tell Me Your name - P-Vine .... they have more of a basic sound to them, the 45's sound a bit more polished.

New Sounds - Don't Take Your Love - P-Vine.

George Scott - I'm A fool For You - Maple.

The Artistics - Why, Why, Why...On and On...That's What My Lady Says - Brunswick.

The Exciters - Give It All - RCA.

The Ascots - Color Me Soul... She's So Indifferent To Me Now... Let's Seranade Our Love.- Crazy Cajun... (think you could play track from the album!).

Ohio Players - Love Slipped Through My Fingers - Trip.

Junior Walker and The All Stars - Psychedelic Shack - SOUL.

Junior Wells =- Sweet Darling Think It Over - Blue Rock.

Garnett Mimms - As Long As i Have You - United Artists.

Williams and Watson - Love Is A Funny Thing - O'Keh.

Hesitations - That's What Love Is - Kapp.

Marvin Gaye - So Long - mfp.

The Isley Brothers - It Moves Me To Tears - Starline.

James Brown - Why Did You Take Your Love From Me - King.

Plus loads more that Iv'e forgotten at the moment.

12" Willie

ps, Soulsters, I know nothing about 45's, so if Iv'e got any wrong stick me upside down in a bucket of Cider :D.
