45cellar Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 PopSike.com PopSike.com We have the name change from THE DOWNBEATS to THE ELGINS with STICKERS covering THE DOWNBEATS etc. The Staggered VIP LOGO for the DEMO and later VIP Design for THE DOWNBEATS. Later VIP Design for THE ELGINS Just bought this on the Earlier VIP Design as a DEMO (MONARCH PRESS) Monarch did have the habit of using the Earlier Designs for a longer period of time to other pressing plants. Group name "ELGINS" rather than THE ELGINS Guessing there's a Stock Copy on the Earlier Design too for the West Coast Press. Any West Coast Early Design as THE DOWNBEATS ? How many Variations are out there for this release ?
Sean Hampsey Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 think mine is same as the second one shown Roger. I'll check! Sean
45cellar Posted September 12, 2012 Author Posted September 12, 2012 Thanks Sean Wondering if just one Pressing Plant was Involved by allowing THE DOWNBEATS copies to escape. Must have been late in production when the Artists name was changed, Stock Copies Involved as THE DOWNBEATS. My DEMO has Delta # 59496 / Delta # 59497 which places it at October / November 1965 >>> ANORAK'S CORNER <<<
Robbk Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 My Downbeats' White DJ is an RCA (Midwest) pressing,- K4M-4907-1.
45cellar Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 My Downbeats' White DJ is an RCA (Midwest) pressing,- K4M-4907-1. Many Thanks, is that the Straight VIP Logo at the side.
Robbk Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) Many Thanks, is that the Straight VIP Logo at the side. No. It seems to be the same issue as the scan above, from Popsike, with the straddled V.I.P. Here is mine: By rob_k at 2011-05-21 Edited September 13, 2012 by RobbK

Here is mine: By rob_k at 2011-05-21 Thanks again. (Midwest) pressing, I assume that they must have gone to press before Monarch. or at least printed the labels.
Modernsoulsucks Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 I've got a straight VIP logo WDJ of Downbeats. Same pressing as Bob but not staggered. ROD
45cellar Posted September 15, 2012 Author Posted September 15, 2012 Thanks Rod Your DEMO to this Stock Copy EAST COAST PopSike.com I assume that the; VinylEAST COAST = Straight VIP at side Label Number, situated to the right on a DEMO / Stock Copy.MIDWEST = Staggered VIP DEMO - Label Number at the bottom DEMO / Stock Copy. StyreneWEST COAST = Normally MULTICOLOURED DEMO (Sometimes WHITE / BLACK DEMO), Bold Text. I wonder if there's a MONARCH press for DOWNBEATS out there too as a DEMO or Stock Copy.
Robbk Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I think that staggered V.I.P. was a misprint, and the real design intended was straight vertical. I've seen the vertical on some other WDJ issues.

However, The Various Pressing Plants and Printer appear to have left clues as to the region the record was pressed. Quality Control didn't specify regards to Label Layout. Just piecing together the different pressing plants, staggered VIP appears on quite a few releases and I believe. Looking at the Layout, gives a clue to pressing plant. WEST COAST (Styrene Bold Text) - Expect a Multicoloured DEMO, although some releases are Black / White EAST COAST = STRAIGHT VIP LOGO (Vinyl) Label Number to right. EAST COAST = DOUBLE SIDED STOCK COPY - (USED FOR PROMOTION I BELEIVE) MIDWEST = STAGGERED VIP LOGO (Vinyl) Label Number at Bottom. The position of the Label Credits, match on all three.
