Jim G Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I won a job lot of Maxine Brown records (pictured below) for £4.63 and one of them is Ask Me / Yesterday's Kisses. Yesterdays Kisses is new to me (its from 1963) but I absolutely love it and is so like Kurt Harris's "Emperor of My Baby's Heart" (but a little faster) Does it get played out? (I don't get out much but will be soon as I am moving back to Aycliffe!)
Denbo Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 It used to get played out. And yes, you're right, it's a great record. Also came out on UK Stateside. 1
Jim G Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 It used to get played out. And yes, you're right, it's a great record. Also came out on UK Stateside. I would love to hear it blasted out at a soul night, I might ask for it at one of the Aycliffe or Boro Soul Nights
soul45s Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I've been playing it on and off for 5 years at the Bradford rarer & underplayed events. A quality tune indeed!
Pete S Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 There's a great version of this by Big Maybelle too 2

Denbo Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 There's a US picture cover for it as well...nice! I wonder? Does that mean ALL US releases of this record had a picture sleeve? And if not, how did they decide which would, and which wouldn't get picture sleeves?
Paul McKay Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Even nicer on a nice white demo Dave! 1
Denbo Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Even nicer on a nice white demo Dave! Look at that, they've even kept the star in the bottom RH side of the label on the white demo. Cool.

I wonder if your all white Demos are in fact Canadian Demos? Only, Wand Demos I've got I'm sure say something along the lines of Advanced Copy, whatever? Edited September 11, 2012 by denbo
Eddyw Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 what a great thread this is , i have been looking at my copy of this ( same as pauls copy that is ) over the weekend, but i just could not decide what title to list it as on Ebay so is the white copy 1 , white demo 2, white issue 3, white label promo the reason i put white label promo is the dealer i bought it off said it was , but im not sure it is , anyone know what is the best to list it as , thanks Eddy
Pete S Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Did I sell you that white Wand Maxine Brown Paul? If not, I sold it someone for either 15 or 20 quid. Had it for months or even 2 years, no interest whatsoever.

It doesn't say promo anywhere on the label. 1
Eddyw Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Thanks pete , so there is no white demos , the only demos i have seen have been p/sleeve ones , that clears it up for me , Thanks Eddy
Denbo Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Even nicer on a nice white demo Dave! Is it a Demo, or an issue that's had the black sections accidentally left off? Or perhaps a Canadian release?
Dave Pinch Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 just a white issue and yes only worth £10/15 tops. with p/s......£25 on uk issue or at least thats what i sold mine for recently ..but what a record

Denbo Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Whoops! Sorry chaps - this is the Demo copy that came with the pic sleeve! So what was the all white copy I wonder?
Jim G Posted September 12, 2012 Author Posted September 12, 2012 There is a picture cover issue copy for sale here so where the picture covers random I wonder? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370472247790?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_481wt_1185

Paul McKay Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I wonder if the pic sleeve only cane with demos. Fkynny what's hiding inside your sleeve?
Denbo Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I wonder if the pic sleeve only cane with demos. Fkynny what's hiding inside your sleeve? Don't think it matters what's hiding inside Flynny's sleeve, sleeves can easily be swapped. There'll be some rhyme or reason for the picture sleeve releases, I just wish I could get to the bottom of it.
Guest Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I wonder if the pic sleeve only cane with demos. Flynny what's hiding inside your sleeve? A stock copy...West Coast Monarch pressed...and looking at your demo I'd wager yours is also a Monarch press? MAYBE the sleeves were used to further expose Maxine to the West Coast audience? However, as Denbo points out, sleeves and discs may well experience swap-arounds over the years.
Soulman Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 This threads just reminded me that I have a copy of this with picture cover but I can't remember if it is an issue or demo. Either way it's going to be up for grabs as I'm selling up bit by bit... and I don't think I've ever played it. Bearing in mind it came from John at the Bowl, that should give you a clue as to condition. Steve
Dave Pinch Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 i think the picture sleeve came with the issue.. any demo with it probably was just married up at some point over the years..make it worth a bit more tho ..£30

Steve I hope it goes to a good home, the record is almost 50 years old and I just got mine in a job lot this week, dropped the needle on it and fell in love, I am almost embarrassed by that fact! Steve G Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 They did several PS's around this time - Kingsmen and a couple of others as well spring to mind. You are right probably done to help promote the artist and as a bit of a novelty. Not all copies would have come with PS maybe a couple of thousand. 2

Thanks Ste.
