Your quite right, let's be honest romantically to me it's worth more than most people, some think it's crap and so on. To me it's a £500 - £600 record tops as there are hundreds out there, we must have a hundred in Stockport. Can't get anyone to sell it to me though, I once turned down a cracked demo for £15 which played perfect, more fool me they say. Wigan was a cheap night out back then getting the bus from Manchester foR 4p etc, but I've paid up since ha ha

Thinking about it, this was a very slow track for the Casino at a time of ampet - 100 mph based stompers.

Still real quality in my opinion, love this & a Taj Mahal track that I can't remember the title of.

AId.

Cheeky t*at, I'm from Barrow (which may be proof positive actually). Used to go out with the singers daughter. He didn't have any lol

Yep, Germany and Italy under the name John St John. I think I was the first person to speak to him (John Ritson) back in 1990-91(he was trying to buy a copy of their One In A Million 45) and He told me that the groups manager wanted to put out a solo single by him and change his name to John St John, he said no way and as far as he knew, nothing came of it - so the John St John single was issued without his knowledge and I have to admit I was astounded when the first one surfaced.

My missus lived in Barrow as a teenager, so I do feel I am qualified to have a view on this one. Plus, unlike many people, I have actually been there

I might know here Steve; a local town for local people

Don't know if he's still got it but sold mine (M- condition issue) to a certain Mr Jeffries... and it really was flawless. You could always ask.One of the most atmospheric up-tempo blue eyed soul tunes to have graced the scene IMO

Yes I'm sure you do Phil. ALthough she did manage to "escape" at a young age

Me too mate, I caught one of those trains so boldly advertised on Barrow southbound platform: "to Preston & beyond"

I kid you not.

Funnily enough, used to travel to Morecambe with the lass who's dad was, as you now know, the singer and Sean Flannagan who's dad was, I believe the drummer. Chapter 5 and the A590 both great and both out of Barra

Kinda with PK....this tune is part of my NS journey over the decades for sure...it's one of those tunes I can wait for but should kinda have one in the box...but never seem to turn up for some reason. £600 tops for me for a minter!

Oh I am not dissing the record at all, I have a minty UK demo and seem to remember it sounded pretty good in an echoey hall in the 70s.

Agree, very atmospheric in that big main hall, something a bit different from the norm of the day I'd say.

Brian Rae offered one to my mate for a tenner in 79, my mate didn't bother as is wasn't a minter, mistake that me thinks.

Aid.

But that was the right price for it about 28 years ago.

Was it £20 mid 80s?....bought my demo late 80s and paid £150.....remember it well cus it was my first 3 figure record.....actually considered selling it a few years ago but couldn't do it, great tune and still love to hear it out.

I remember it on Rob Wigley's "La Beat" list as an auction item in the late 80s when I was a teenager! Pretty sure from memory the Four Tracks was another auction item on the same list. Where's Rob?!

I picked up YCMI recently on that weird italian EP on the same label as the italian 7". Several tracks each side, presumably a sort of label sampler. Think Pete Smith's had one through his hands...

It looks like the price greatly escalated within a very short period of time. An old friend, Karl Simmonds, paid £18 for a demo of You Can't Mean It in 1984, and £20 for a demo of One In A Million both at the same time! I think it started to gain more exposure from here, and that's probably what caused the rapid hike in price.

I paid £150 for a VG one in 1992, that was my first one.

Strange that in his UK Soul series in Record Collector magazine Chris Savory didn't even mention it (Part 10 CBS, January 1981). He gave a £7.00 price tag to One In A Million.

It was a big want when it was a casino spin in the 7ts.

Yes - remember that issue well and that Chris Savory's CBS soul discography was very far from complete.

He definitely shouldn't have missed that but when I was doing Beatin Rhythm I lost count of the new discoveries we found on CBS, I"m still finding them now even.

This is my current favourite, IT'S NOT NORTHERN AND IT'S NOT SOUL but it's a brilliant, catchy record - give it a chance before you tell me I'm mad.

It's also practically impossible to find...

The Soul Police, might have a dim view of this being called a soul record :wicked:

Sorry Pete, I have always disliked it.

Always been one of my pet hates, along with BenZine and Garry Lewis & The Playboys.

When they appeared at the Gliderdrome, in Boston, on June 13 1969 they were advertised as Chapter Five with John St John

Andy

Is that year correct Andy, he told me they split after One In A Million failed to get a release
