Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 hey all, my DJ partner and I do a monthly Soul & Garage club here in Copenhagen, and recently we had a shift in our lineup in which our other partner left, taking the club's name with him (I was never married to it anyhow, but thats another story). our next gig is a mere 10 days away and we're positively stuck on coming up with a name, so I thought I might toss it out to my fellow soulies here on soul-source. any serious suggestions would be a great help to us, plus if we do end up picking your name, we'll sort out some way to pay thanks for it. not monetary, but you know, a little something to show our appreciation. thanks in advance! :D
Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 no, but those guys do a great club!
Haydn Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 around what lines were you already thinking? 1
Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 our old club was called Acid Eyes, which doesn't necessarily represent the soul end of it at all, nor is it really garage. catchy, though. a two word thing like that though seems to be the defining thing with most of the clubs at our spot, so we're thinking along those lines as well. something short and to the point.
Guest dundeedavie Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 It's really hard coming up with a name for a club, when we looked at names we wanted to convey the feeling and what the club is all about, the ethos..... So, we called it BASICS

Russ Vickers Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Are we talking 6ts Garage or that dance genre Garage ? Russ
pikeys dog Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 How about thinking completely out of the box? "Wonderful" As in...."Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen" as sung by Danny Kaye. 1
Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 "Nite Beat" is a great name Russ, but theres already a well-established soul club in San Francisco where I used to live called "Nightbeat". something with "beat" in the name would be stellar.
Soulman Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Why not tel it like it is..... A soul night, for soulful people, who like soul music. So why not just call it "soul" and add your bit on the end if you must. Or you could just put a board outside the venue saying get inside you b-stards and enjoy what you hear..... Simple Steve
TommieOnTheSpot Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 What bout 'Nordic Nite Life' thought this because Nordic is a native of Scandinavia and Nite Life is the label that released the Northern Soul classic The Jades — I'm Where It's At
Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 I do always spin a 70's reissue of "I'm Where It's At" I bought off Marc Forrest last year 1
Guest john s Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Get your current play box out, go through it looking for tune titles that could work... And agree on the 'two word' thing, normally a good rule!
Pete Jay Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 you could call it:- Soul-Beat or The Soul Garage
hipshaker 05 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I like the two below ........ maybe take "the" out. when we started we tried to emphasise the dancing nature of our night ........ and did what john has suggested, finally finding a track called hipshaker on an acid jazz compilation. THE BOOM BOOM ROOM SHAKE, RATTLE N SOUL Russ
Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 a little on the cheesy side, but surprisingly not taken as much as I can find...how do you guys feel about the name "Plan Beat"? 1

Guest john s Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 a little on the cheesy side, but surprisingly not taken as much as I can find...how do you guys feel about the name "Plan Beat"? As in 'Plan B..' ? It's ok, not great but ok.
pikeys dog Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 it's been done before, but if you want Beat in there, then theres few better than "The Beat Club"
Autumnstoned Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 (edited) Not original but there's " The Beat Route " This is one of mine "Beat n Blockers" Edited September 5, 2012 by autumnstoned
Guest john s Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 (edited) 'Yes Suh!' I like this one! '99th Floor' 'Popcorn cellar' 'Ball a fire' 'Get smart' etc etc... What's your target market? I'm guessing it's not middle-aged soulies! Edited September 5, 2012 by john s
Carty Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 how about the copenhagen casino,(joke) i think a good name would be two in the morning after the spooners crowd instumental, , all true soulies would love to visit that place
Andreas B Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 "Midnight Movers" ala Wilson Pickett is another I've tossed around in the past
Daveyboy66 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I suppose Riker Room is out of the question
Guest MBarrett Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 (edited) IMHO there's a name out there looking for a home - and that is "New Religion" as in "New Religion Soul Club" (Somebody shout if already in use!!) The term was coined by Pete Meaden - mod icon - and used as the title of 1966 Jimmy James & the Vagabonds album. Meaden was their manager at the time. So comes complete with its own mod/soul heritage and a bit anarchic to boot. If you think I'm talking a load of tosh - no offence taken. MB P.S. Has anyone ever used "Ready, Steady, Go!" A really positive vibe and plenty of 60's soul heritage going on there too. P.P.S. Liking Midnight Movers too. P.P.P.S. Can you get it down to a short list and set them up as a poll for people to vote on. Found it really easy last time I set one up. Edited September 5, 2012 by MBarrett
Carty Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 midnight movers, yes , more i think about it, it seems there are hundreds of track titles that would do the trick, ton of dynamite, going to a happening,, soulsville, , please let us know what you decide , back in my day i dont think you needed a name , people just talked about the venue,or the town it was in, a good name does set it off right, there was a club night in manchester about fifteen years ago , called northern funk, this name couples with atmospheric views of manchester and salford in the sixties on the flyers made it look and sound a really sweet place, never went though , i dont think it could have lived up to the image. 1
Haydn Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 i remember an old mag from the 80's called "Beat of the Street". That Funkin Beat, . Beatin' Tracks, . On the Upbeat. H
Anais nin Carms Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 If you want to appeal to the younger generation follow apples lead and call it simply .......SOULPOD
Andreas B Posted September 6, 2012 Author Posted September 6, 2012 thanks so much everyone for your input! we're ideally looking for something that will convey the idea of it being both a soul and garage club.

Alison H Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 (edited) thanks so much everyone for your input! we're ideally looking for something that will convey the idea of it being both a soul and garage club. What about a simple "The Soul Garage" It does sort of lean more towards "soul" but if you designed your flyers/posters in a way to represent the "garage" element then that may work. I loved "The Boom Boom Room" !! but possibly doesn't cover the "soul" element Good luck, hope you find the right name Ali Edited September 6, 2012 by Alison H
Ged Parker Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Tow-away Zone Conveys both a well known soul tune and hint of a 'garage'. It also conveys a need to constantly keep moving forward. A busy active area where no dithering takes place. Action, Activity and Excitement. It also has a ready made visual identity. 2
Blunny Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 (edited) The Up & Over Club. On the soul side it's a well known 60's classic by Jay Traynor and on the Garage side, well, it's a door!! I like it but obviously the Garage side needs a little more thought behind it. It's hard this, innit? Edited September 6, 2012 by Blunny

Hold Tight Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 (edited) Sorry can't resist any longer. Beat route was a club in london in the early 80's if I remeber, ton of dynamite is in gloucester, in order to be positive what about Wildsoul - nod to the more frenetic and less produced garage soul, which is also a favourite of mine. Cheers Mark. Edited September 6, 2012 by hold tight
Reg Scott Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 "Midnight Movers" ala Wilson Pickett is another I've tossed around in the past Hi Andreas Like the "Midnight Movers" name - but I'm presuming it's a vinyl venue so how about: "Midnight Groove(s)" With or without the 's'

Andreas B Posted September 8, 2012 Author Posted September 8, 2012 HEY ALL, after much deliberation and both of us poring over all your kindly suggestions, we've decided on a name that unfortunately wasn't one of the ones posted. from now on our club will be known as TOWER CITY RYHTHM & SOUL, or just TOWER CITY for shorthand. it represents copenhagen as the city is known as the "city of spires" for all of its centuries-old towers and spires. plus we think it sounds like a vintage label name (I'm sure it probably is?) and gives us a ton of ideas for a club logo. once we've worked out the artwork, I'll post it up here for all to see, PLUS, as a little thank you to all of you who donated the brain energy to help us out with a name I'll also be posting a link to the inaugural night mix cd we'll be giving away to the first attendees. it's not much, but hopefully you'll enjoy our mix of northern and weirdo garage classics. cheers fellow soulies! 1
spike1 Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Are we talking 6ts Garage or that dance genre Garage ? Russ Bit off of topic but what is or was 6ts garage? Never heard that term before Could you give me a couple of examples? Good luck with your club naming search How about soul quest ? ;) Spike
