Kegsy Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Here we go again. Item sold thru Ebay, paid for using Paypal and posted to Holland. I have proof of postage, well, the receipt with destination written on it by the girl in the post office, the receipt is stapled to five others that I posted that day which all appear to have arrived. It was sent basic airmail not registered/recorded etc. The guy contacted me yesterday to say he hasnt got it. Where do I stand on this ? Is the buyer insured by Ebay/Paypal ? Is my Receipt enough proof I posted it. The record wasnt a high value but this seems to be happening more and more and I'm getting ferking fed up of refunding money when its no fault of mine. Kegsy
Denbo Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 You could receive payment by Bankers Draft and send record "at owners risk". If they don't like that, then they'll not bid. If they don't mind that, then you don't have to make refunds if it gets 'so-called' lost in the post. That's how it used to work back in the days of mailed sales lists. Having said that, people seemed more honest in them days.

I have am changing my ebay "description" bit to say that I wont be responsible for item lost in the post unless buyers pay for tracked/recorded shipping. Dont know if this would work given ebay/paypal rules. Kegsy 1
Sebastian Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Dont know if this would work given ebay/paypal rules. It will not. It doesn't matter what you write in your item description. If the buyer pays with PayPal it will not make a difference. You need to have proof of DELIVERY in order for PayPal to side with the seller in a case like this.

Haydn Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I sold an album to a fella in Spain, the guy was very patient as it hadn't arrived after six weeks. I had proof of posting and tracking but LP seemed to just disappear from trace. I heard nothing more from the customer till a total of eight weeks where he emailed to say thanks for the great record, it had been in Spain for the past five weeks going through their postal system. Dates of departure and arrival to destination matched with my information I gave. God only knows where it had been, maybe been bootlegged before my customer got it There may still be hope

You need to have proof of DELIVERY in order for PayPal to side with the seller in a case like this. So don't take payments via PayPal. Ask for Bankers Draft or the like from abroad and cheques etc from within the UK.
Kegsy Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 So don't take payments via PayPal. Ask for Bankers Draft or the like from abroad and cheques etc from within the UK. Trouble is on low value items wouldn't the bankers draft be a tad expensive to sort out for the buyer. Kegsy
Denbo Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Trouble is on low value items wouldn't the bankers draft be a tad expensive to sort out for the buyer. Kegsy True. How about cash for low value items, with cost of exchange rate included? Just thinking out loud.
Kris Holmes Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 not allowed to accept cash on ebay anymore i thought? as a buyer i wouldn't touch anything without the paypal option, it's just so quick & easy. you will lose customers if you don't accept paypal, unfortunately that's just how it seems to be these days. as Sebastian says, doesn't matter what you state in the description there is no way you can stop a chargeback, paypal will always side with the buyer unless you can provide proof of delivery & even then it is not easy to reverse the chargeback.
Kegsy Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 (edited) as Sebastian says, doesn't matter what you state in the description there is no way you can stop a chargeback, paypal will always side with the buyer unless you can provide proof of delivery & even then it is not easy to reverse the chargeback. So, even if the buyer paid for Tracked/recorded and the seller had all the necessary documents/numbers as proof of postage it would not make any difference if the item gets lost ????? This seems well off it in terms of fairness. Surely the postal service should be the one who has to reimburse the buyer NOT Paypal from the sellers account. kegsy Edited September 5, 2012 by Kegsy

I bought the record years ago. Does this work on Air Mail to Europe ? Bantams were doing well before Saturday, Alex struggling a bit tho too. Have considered Ping it myself too, but will it ever be european wide. Kegsy
Sebastian Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 So, even if the buyer paid for Tracked/recorded and the seller had all the necessary documents/numbers as proof of postage it would not make any difference if the item gets lost ????? That's right. But the chances of a registered/recorded/insured package getting lost is, in the grand scheme of things, not that big.
Chalky Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 You can do a bank transfer world wide can't you, free? I did with Flynny in Japan. I wouldn't send anywhere without the required insurance nowadays too many seem to "get lost".

Stopped selling overseas due to lost post only post signed for now although its a little dearer i think it pays for both seller and buyer

Mr Smithy Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 You can do a bank transfer world wide can't you, free? I did with Flynny in Japan. Not in the US. Domestic you can use various billpay or whatever they're called options but the last "Wire" transfer from UK cost me $13 ( or something like that) not allowed to accept cash on ebay anymore i thought? You can accept anything you want to accept Just a few months ago I sold something that added up to $19 & change with the mail, he asked me would I accept cash and just stuck a $20 bill in the mail, I sent him the 45 and everyone was happy. I even stuck a cheapie in there for him for being such a nice guy. Doesn't happen very often nowadays ( read , almost never) but it does revive your faith for about 10 minutes
Keithw Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 in uk to uk - its free - so is Pingit via your mobile Phone just need to reg with Barclays first to use Pingit
pikeys dog Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 If you make any item 'buyer collects - C.O.D.' then surely you can get around the need for Paypal?
Denbo Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 If you make any item 'buyer collects - C.O.D.' then surely you can get around the need for Paypal? Lateral thinking. I like it.
