Bazm
Ian Clarke listed a Betty Boo - Say It Isn't So RCA acetate for Offers sometime last year. Emailed him to find out what offers he'd received. It had sold for £126 Hi Ian I eluded to this earlier in the thread and it actually sold for more than you state. Guest martyn
Was a Soul Sam play @ the time ? First time I heard it was via Sam @ Wigan anyway Cheers Paul The first time I heard it was when Rug played it at The Rock Foundation soul night in Rushden in late 77 .....I think ( but I'm not sure on this) that Sam may have had his copy (or vive versa)....Not getting into another who/when/why/what argument on this coz I'm not certain 100% like I was with Betty Boo. Soul Shrews
Very interesting thread and lots of information. To me (as someone looking in at an era slightly before I went to WC ) it looks simple: Taking Pete S' testimony as a starting point (being in the room and taping it is obviously a good starting point). It would seem to me to go as follows.: SIIS was first played by RS in late 77. It was played as a newie every night, once a week at WC right through 78 and into 79. nothing unusual there. For example "I don't like to lose"Â was played for much longer by RS. So it was a top newie for about 18 months. It never obtained "oldie"Â status because for whatever reason Grapevine finally decided to release it as a single in the late summer of 79 and nobody bothered playing it after that. Sometime in the months after it was also included on the compilation "Sound Of The Grapevine"Â (where I first heard it) — Side 2 track 4. So that's it; 18 months a newie and not played as an oldie. However, just to reaffirm, it took me about five minutes on google to find this: Dave McCadden, The Beat fanzine Feb 1979: "I've always had a built in resistance to tailor mades and records where there are no originals to be had, and I've cursed many of the Wylie productions ( Hanky Panky / Down in the dumps ) for that very reason but I almost throw any doubts out of the window when I hear the brilliant BETTY BOO "SAY IT ISN'T SO" . . story is that Sam's had an acetate for a few years but I ain't heard him play the bleeder, if that's true Sam you want whipping, as this is a great voc/inst that Rich has been hammering for a long time, " For a long time .. in Feb 1979. Thanks for that maslar. Apologies to you, Pete S and martyn.....I got this very wrong Eh up Paul - Richard and Nev Wherry then later Sam. Nick i had no idea Richard Searling played it. As I said I "remember" Sam playing it @ Wigan was the 1st time I heard it Cheers Paul Edited September 9, 2012 by soul shrews Link to comment Social source share

Guest DeeJay
It would never have been scheduled for release on RCA (USA)... it was purely Richard's connections with RCA (UK) at the time and the fact that he and John had done a deal to release Grapevine via that outlet. I'm sure had it been put out in the States it would have been at least on something like Pameline or at best on Golden World which would have given Betty the most exposure. Why it wasn't we may never know Steve Ok so i have one of the original RCA acetates that were distributed to the "top" dj's of the time I think they were distributed via Dickyboy and RCA (Mine came from Pat Brady) Does that mean it's worth a few bob? True Jerry, if they were 'one off's' people had to travel to hear them (no youtube then), so they were less overplayed & seemed to last longer....On the other hand though there were a lot of records that got presssed far, far to soon that had a lot more time to run ......As for Yate, there were a lot of sounds if I recall that were played by Clarkie (& others) that 'didn't travel'....Might be an idea to re-visit some of the Yate playlists from 78/79. charliew
Found this thread very intresting ,but seeing as it started about a RCA acetate going for silly money on JM,s auction then at some point leading on to reference the tomangoes and Larry clinton RCA acetates, i really do wonder about the validity of these ? . From what ive read i assume there was no original acetate of betty boo other than master tape, however i recall purchasing an orig acetate of larry clinton via Pat brady many years ago so surely this makes a mockery of an RCA acetate ? Guest Nick Harrison
That is the most ridiculous post I have seen for a long while. You were obviously not going in 77 or you wouldn't spout such tripe......The Fabuletts, The Servicemen (are you angry), Burning Bush, The Ellingtons, Derek & Ray, Billy Arnell, 7th Wonder, Flamming Emeralds, Lovelittes, to name but a few were all being played as newies by Ginger or Sam in the summer of 77...As was Betty Boo in the autumn of 77 by Ginger. Get your facts right before calling me a liar. So Ginger heighten's his well established flagging oldies profile and introduces a small percentage of newies to his ageing sets . Why is that termed ridiculous !! As very few of the above newies were not limited exclusive to Mr Taylor were they around this time! Link to comment Social source share
