Mach Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 get ready for an influx at your local soul nites over the next few weeks
Jumpinjoan Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Not seen it either. Shall record it and try and summon the courage sometime 2
Guest allnightandy Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 IMHO It's poor and a bit embarrassing
Stevie Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Best you can hope for is that none of your friends watch it... 1
Winnie :-) Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 ive never seen it yet, tonight bbc 2 11.35 soulboy .. gulp! Like most things, best thing to do is experience it yourself and then decide what you think, if we listened to every critic of everything, we'd never do anything 2
Guest Carl Dixon Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I saw it in Leicester Square, London on my own, but with a lady and a daughter a row behind me who had travelled up specifically to see it from Cornwall. They both loved it and the young 14 year old said the music was amazing and that she would interested in learning more about it! So, there is a bigger picture evolving rather than the screenplay etc.
Roburt Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I'll be watching tonight (& I'll have an 'open mind'). 1
paultp Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I've seen it and it is utter sh*te. My wife liked it though.
Davenpete Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Save yourselves, save yourselves - it'll put you off Northern for life! The best bit is when the girl overdoses on one black and white - a pill that is SO ridiculously huge I reckon she actually choked on it. I'm afraid a lot of it makes us look ridiculous - specially the Saturday Night Fever meets Jackie Chan 'dance off' with the evil drug dealer (who even has a Dick Dastardly moustache - though I can talk on that one!). Dx 2
Mak Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Is this the one where they show the door staff being involved in a gear racket , and fighting in the club , and tyhe main kid running from either Nottingham or Stoke to Wigan . If so it's shite.
Seano Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Strange flurry of recent TV coverage for the Northern scene, with George Gently last week, Soulboy tonight - re-run of This England documentary about Wigan up next??
Cunnie Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 As a Modern Soul fan I'm looking forwards to this to see what our cousins on the Northern Soul scene get up to 3
Popular Post Chalky Posted September 1, 2012 Popular Post Posted September 1, 2012 just in case you aren't sure....it's not real life, it is light entertainment 5
Peter99 Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I watched this with my brother ages ago on Sky - he's never been into the scene. He's still taking the piss now! It is only a film though. 1
Staceys Dad Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 you never know we might just find some new soul nights springing up from this film. ....lets be honest we need a few more nights seems to be a quiet on the gig guide at the moment...... 1

Guest Dan the mod Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 i think its more about the the 2 main people and not so much the music, i think the other film coming out will be a lot better
Chalky Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Mak,its not far from Nottm to Wigan. If you run it after a Brit night. couple of B. bombers not far at all
Steve G Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) I'll be watching tonight (& I'll have an 'open mind'). I saw them all boarding a Barton coach from Stoke to Wigan. Did Barton coaches ever operate around Stoke? They were a Nottingham firm......actually I am just mucking around. So the coaches are "inaccurate". Don't know nothing about the music though. Edited September 1, 2012 by Steve G
Popular Post Reforee Posted September 1, 2012 Popular Post Posted September 1, 2012 Can't believe all the negative vibes. If you want real Wigan Casino then you need help..... they would of shut the place down on the toilets alone! let alone the drugs?????? Accept the film as it is.... Its an artistic view on something we hold dear but not exclusively. Also take a long hard look at the nighter scene...no new blood and slowly shrinking. Don't tell me we all started off with top tunes at home and straight into into the big time. We all did Youth clubs and doing and saying daft things while becoming soul fans, accept it but don't take the moral high ground because you think your superior with your time served under your belt. I can remember when the TV docs and the Telegraph mag spread hit the streets back in the 70s and that got slagged of for making it popular. Come on!!,! the more popular Soul music gets the happier I am.. Imagine Tobi Legend, Frank Wilson, Sam Dees, Curtis Mayfield music in lifts, waiting rooms and while your on hold on the bloody phone? I must have my preaching head on......tuff needs to be said 10
Popular Post Quinvy Posted September 2, 2012 Popular Post Posted September 2, 2012 The people who know nothing about our scene all seem to enjoy it..........says it all really. After all Quadrophenia was nothing like my experiences of the 60's mod scene, but it was hugely popular. At least the background music is enjoyable. 4
Popular Post Mark Bicknell Posted September 2, 2012 Popular Post Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Not seen this until last night had time to digest it and reflect on it and I have to say I'm so glad I did'nt go to the pictures to see this as there would have been a scene with the manager asking no demanding my money back, forget the hype, forget the subject matter for a second as we are all a little protective of the subject but 'Soulboy' is quite simply a bad movie, bad script with very little story or plot, bad acting, low budget, it has no heart, passion or direction and I knew it would be average but it fell way short of that, I'm not having a go for having a go's sake but in a word it was crap and I would be very suprised if the film makers broke even on their investment here which I suspect as I said was very low budget in the first place not that low budget always means bad film but in this case it was a bad film, as a subject it deserved better, it should and could have been a gritty drama instead it turned out to be very retro in it's presentation rather than being pure nostalgia which are two very different things between actually being there and wanting to be there which is the fundimental error in retro attitude and culture it simply does not work unless you have a true understanding first hand of the subject. Before anyone shoots me down and says that this movie was a love story set in 1974 with a Northern Soul soundtrack fine not a problem with that it stll not a good film no matter how you dress it up sorry, one or two scenes made me chuckle like in the record bar when the bloke said he had stompers, toe tappers etc. almost fell off the sofa as it was so off the wall but had to hide behind the sofa with the dance off at the end what was that all about? Regards -Mark Bicknell. Edited September 2, 2012 by Mark Bicknell 4
Roburt Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Well, I quite enjoyed it. It had shortcomings but 99% of movies do.
Steve G Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 one or two scenes made me chuckle like in the record bar when the bloke said he had stompers, toe tappers etc. almost fell off the sofa as it was so off the wall but had to hide behind the sofa with the dance off at the end what was that all about? Regards -Mark Bicknell. I think the "Dance off" was a nod to the impact that "West Side Story" had on the early days of the northern scene- you know The Sharks and The Jets etc...
Premium Stuff Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I watched it again after seeing it at Leicester Square with a non-soulie mate when it first came out.. Can't remember what I said on here then, but on the small screen it came across like a poorly put together, low-budget affair. The acting was not particularly good either. Was not impressed by the standard of the dancing in the movie, and even the Wigan out-takes weren't the best bits. There were more cringe-worthy bits in the film than I remember. Get's everyone talking though Cheers Richard
Guest MBarrett Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 One redeeming feature for me was Felicity Jones (Mandy). "Girl next door" simplicity - no overacting etc. And from the brief dance scene in the bedroom a natural mover. Hope she goes on to bigger and better things. (Oh yes and I had a girlfriend a bit like her in the early 70's. )
Sunnysoul Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Did any of you see that US movie "Shag" from the 90s and how badly it portrayed the Beach Music scene ???
Pete S Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The people who know nothing about our scene all seem to enjoy it..........says it all really. After all Quadrophenia was nothing like my experiences of the 60's mod scene, but it was hugely popular. At least the background music is enjoyable. I can't believe anyone who was attending allnighters in the 70's did not relate to Quadrophenia, especially the living for the weekend ethic, the highs of saturday night followed by the comedowns, being ill at work etc, looking for gear during the week, visits to chemists and so on, absolutely 100% reminded me of "us" when we were younger and still does. 3

Zed1 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 it'll put you off Northern for life! I'd have thought a trip to a typical local soul nite with the usual piss heads and people in fancy dress would be much more likely to 'put you off Northern Soul for life' than this film..... or indeed ANY film for that matter Also, there were more records played in 'Soulboy' than the average soul nite too... 1
Guest Byrney Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The first time I watched this was at the Derby Quad cinema with my Northern Soul hat on and cringe I most certainly did. Last night I looked at this from another perspective trying to put aside my involvment on the scene and judge it on its own merits as a director's artistic expression. Quite simply and as Mark says it is a poor film, badly crafted, crap sets, the script's sub plot makes no sense and was so very clumsy ( Tom jones fan running off with love interest- no substance to that whatsoever, not enough dramatic transition to lead to them running off) and a handful of extras used in numerous shots, not just the Casino but all the way through; that there Stoke seems like a ghost town. Also poorly edited, again clumsy and jolted. The idea in mainstream films like this is to enable you to 'suspend disbelief'; to be drawn into it and forget your watching an artificial construct, that didn't happen here as it was that poorly crafted I couldn't help but notice the 'joins' all the way through. I'm not having a go because it's a film about Northern, it's just purely a very poor film in its own right. Not seen this until last night had time to digest it and reflect on it and I have to say I'm so glad I did'nt go to the pictures to see this as there would have been a scene with the manager asking no demanding my money back, forget the hype, forget the subject matter for a second as we are all a little protective of the subject but 'Soulboy' is quite simply a bad movie, bad script with very little story or plot, bad acting, low budget, it has no heart, passion or direction and I knew it would be average but it fell way short of that, I'm not having a go for having a go's sake but in a word it was crap and I would be very suprised if the film makers broke even on their investment here which I suspect as I said was very low budget in the first place not that low budget always means bad film but in this case it was a bad film, as a subject it deserved better, it should and could have been a gritty drama instead it turned out to be very retro in it's presentation rather than being pure nostalgia which are two very different things between actually being there and wanting to be there which is the fundimental error in retro attitude and culture it simply does not work unless you have a true understanding first hand of the subject. Supercorsa Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Saw it for the first time last night. Nice to hear a few tunes, but as for the actual film and script thought it was very poor indeed. I'd have been disappointed to pay good money at the cinema to watch a film that didn't last as long as your average Carry On film. As for the lead character he bore too much of a resemblance to Big Cook, from CBBC's Big Cook Little Cook, for me to take him seriously. See what I mean? As for Felicity Jones, thought she was better in that other 70's based film Cemetery Junction. Still thought she was the best actor/actress in Soulboy though, mind you wasn't much competition was there. As a whole preferered George Gently's nod to Northern Soul.

Jaco Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The Telegraph review of it summed it up perfectly for me - "It also feels oddly detached from the compelling genre of music it claims to advocate" Poor on almost every level and that is being as objective as possible. 1

KevH Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Remember coming out of the Casino one morning, and a mate said to me "Be careful on the way out". "Drug Squad?" i asked. "No, don't trip on those broken copies of Yvonne Baker". 1

Every Northern soul / motown outing on tv has been criticised, so just watch it as a bit of fiction which is what it is......enjoy dave
Cunnie Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Don't know about the rest of you but I'd like to see the dance off made compulsory at every Northern night. Now that would be worth going out for
