I saw it in Leicester Square, London on my own, but with a lady and a daughter a row behind me who had travelled up specifically to see it from Cornwall. They both loved it and the young 14 year old said the music was amazing and that she would interested in learning more about it! So, there is a bigger picture evolving rather than the screenplay etc.

Save yourselves, save yourselves - it'll put you off Northern for life!

The best bit is when the girl overdoses on one black and white - a pill that is SO ridiculously huge I reckon she actually choked on it.

I'm afraid a lot of it makes us look ridiculous - specially the Saturday Night Fever meets Jackie Chan 'dance off' with the evil drug dealer (who even has a Dick Dastardly moustache - though I can talk on that one!).

Is this the one where they show the door staff being involved in a gear racket , and fighting in the club , and tyhe main kid running from either Nottingham or Stoke to Wigan . If so it's shite.

Mak,its not far from Nottm to Wigan. If you run it after a Brit night.

I'll be watching tonight (& I'll have an 'open mind').

I saw them all boarding a Barton coach from Stoke to Wigan.

Did Barton coaches ever operate around Stoke? They were a Nottingham firm......actually I am just mucking around. So the coaches are "inaccurate". Don't know nothing about the music though.

one or two scenes made me chuckle like in the record bar when the bloke said he had stompers, toe tappers etc. almost fell off the sofa as it was so off the wall but had to hide behind the sofa with the dance off at the end what was that all about?

Regards -Mark Bicknell.

I think the "Dance off" was a nod to the impact that "West Side Story" had on the early days of the northern scene- you know The Sharks and The Jets etc...:lol:

I watched it again after seeing it at Leicester Square with a non-soulie mate when it first came out..

Can't remember what I said on here then, but on the small screen it came across like a poorly put together, low-budget affair. The acting was not particularly good either.

Was not impressed by the standard of the dancing in the movie, and even the Wigan out-takes weren't the best bits.

There were more cringe-worthy bits in the film than I remember.

Get's everyone talking though :D

Cheers

Richard

One redeeming feature for me was Felicity Jones (Mandy).

"Girl next door" simplicity - no overacting etc.

And from the brief dance scene in the bedroom a natural mover.

Hope she goes on to bigger and better things.

(Oh yes and I had a girlfriend a bit like her in the early 70's.:D )

The people who know nothing about our scene all seem to enjoy it..........says it all really. After all Quadrophenia was nothing like my experiences of the 60's mod scene, but it was hugely popular. At least the background music is enjoyable.

I can't believe anyone who was attending allnighters in the 70's did not relate to Quadrophenia, especially the living for the weekend ethic, the highs of saturday night followed by the comedowns, being ill at work etc, looking for gear during the week, visits to chemists and so on, absolutely 100% reminded me of "us" when we were younger and still does.

I'd have thought a trip to a typical local soul nite with the usual piss heads and people in fancy dress would be much more likely to 'put you off Northern Soul for life' than this film..... or indeed ANY film for that matter

Also, there were more records played in 'Soulboy' than the average soul nite too...

The first time I watched this was at the Derby Quad cinema with my Northern Soul hat on and cringe I most certainly did. Last night I looked at this from another perspective trying to put aside my involvment on the scene and judge it on its own merits as a director's artistic expression.

Quite simply and as Mark says it is a poor film, badly crafted, crap sets, the script's sub plot makes no sense and was so very clumsy ( Tom jones fan running off with love interest- no substance to that whatsoever, not enough dramatic transition to lead to them running off) and a handful of extras used in numerous shots, not just the Casino but all the way through; that there Stoke seems like a ghost town.

Also poorly edited, again clumsy and jolted. The idea in mainstream films like this is to enable you to 'suspend disbelief'; to be drawn into it and forget your watching an artificial construct, that didn't happen here as it was that poorly crafted I couldn't help but notice the 'joins' all the way through.

I'm not having a go because it's a film about Northern, it's just purely a very poor film in its own right.

Not seen this until last night had time to digest it and reflect on it and I have to say I'm so glad I did'nt go to the pictures to see this as there would have been a scene with the manager asking no demanding my money back, forget the hype, forget the subject matter for a second as we are all a little protective of the subject but 'Soulboy' is quite simply a bad movie, bad script with very little story or plot, bad acting, low budget, it has no heart, passion or direction and I knew it would be average but it fell way short of that, I'm not having a go for having a go's sake but in a word it was crap and I would be very suprised if the film makers broke even on their investment here which I suspect as I said was very low budget in the first place not that low budget always means bad film but in this case it was a bad film, as a subject it deserved better, it should and could have been a gritty drama instead it turned out to be very retro in it's presentation rather than being pure nostalgia which are two very different things between actually being there and wanting to be there which is the fundimental error in retro attitude and culture it simply does not work unless you have a true understanding first hand of the subject.

Before anyone shoots me down and says that this movie was a love story set in 1974 with a Northern Soul soundtrack fine not a problem with that it stll not a good film no matter how you dress it up sorry, one or two scenes made me chuckle like in the record bar when the bloke said he had stompers, toe tappers etc. almost fell off the sofa as it was so off the wall but had to hide behind the sofa with the dance off at the end what was that all about?

Saw it for the first time last night. Nice to hear a few tunes, but as for the actual film and script thought it was very poor indeed. I'd have been disappointed to pay good money at the cinema to watch a film that didn't last as long as your average Carry On film.

As for the lead character he bore too much of a resemblance to Big Cook, from CBBC's Big Cook Little Cook, for me to take him seriously.

See what I mean?

As for Felicity Jones, thought she was better in that other 70's based film Cemetery Junction. Still thought she was the best actor/actress in Soulboy though, mind you wasn't much competition was there.

As a whole preferered George Gently's nod to Northern Soul.
