Chalky Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Money Can't Buy My Love. Can you give me a current price please?
Chalky Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 That's what I thought too but thought I'd check. I might know of one for sale if anyone interested.
Ted Massey Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Darren Brown got 1400 quid not long after i got mine which is the one in Popsike
Robbk Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 (edited) I assume that's a Detroit recording. Sound, Inc. was a Detroit production company, who owned Velgo and Sound City Records. And Jesse Greer was a Detroit songwriter (with HOB/Spartan/Soul Records, etc.) I know she once recorded for Harry Balk's Twirl Records. Edited August 30, 2012 by RobbK
Robbk Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I'd like to hear at least snippits of both sides if it is possible (without joining a pay service to do so). Can anyone help?
Chalky Posted August 30, 2012 Author Posted August 30, 2012 Yes it's Detroit Robb, same label as Bernie Moore....
Raresoul45s Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I'd like to hear at least snippits of both sides if it is possible (without joining a pay service to do so). Can anyone help? Robb you're correct its a Detroit 45 A rare 45 not as rare as Lark 103 Bernie Moore but still very tough I got £1400 or around that figure for a copy a while ago and also have aquired another copy for myself since I think I paid £900 for that one. Also JM got £1400 as well on auction not so long ago. I'll take a copy at £700 right now if anyone wants to sell A great tune and a bargain at anything under four figures. When Ted bought his copy this 45 was not well known at all apart from a few collectors and dealers who had been trying to track a copy down. I only know of a handfull of copies. Darren
Ted Massey Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Robb send me you email addy an i will send you a file of the b side Vivian Jones is instant dance floor music 1
Guest carl_p Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 (edited) I always thought it was Cleveland or at least Ohio. Possibly not the same sound inc. from detroit? Sound Inc used "Mitten Music" for their publishing. I think B & B Music was out of Ohio. I asked Howard Walker (Sound Inc.) about it years ago and he had no recollection of Lark Records, Bernie Moore or Vivian Jones at all. additionally Larry Ray found a copy of Vivian Jones and Bernie Moore together in cleveland in the mid 90's. Chalky Posted August 30, 2012 Author Posted August 30, 2012 wouldn't mind hearing the flip too. Like I said I know of one that will be for sale if anyone interested. Serious offers only.
Robbk Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 (edited) Cleveland is a regular stop for local distribution out of Detroit. It's more likely that it was a Detroit record with connections to Cleveland than the other way round. As I stated above, Jesse Greer was Detroit based, and Vivian jones recorded for Harry Balk's Detroit-based Twirl Records. Sound, Inc. also used Wilhurte and Xyland Music (Velgo), and Devotion Music (Sound City). In addition, the pressing plant code numbers look like they were from American Pressing Plant in Detroit (as the Velgo records used. Edited August 31, 2012 by RobbK
Guest carl_p Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 I must agree Robb. Sound inc. had their own pressing machine for a while and those numbers are similar. Also it appears J. Greer wrote the Marisa Gatti track on Poo Pan as well. I'm not sure Xyland Music was Velgo though? That would have been Bill Carnes on the other side of town...Hyland, Bomb and Martin Music and possibly maybe a few other assorted labels?

Yes, that Xyland Bill Hawkins song was the only one on Velgo. Was Bill Carnes Preston's brother?
pikeys dog Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Reminds me of Hoss and the Back Beat R&B room at Middleton.
Marc Forrest Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Reminds me of Hoss and the Back Beat R&B room at Middleton. may well be joe, I used to play it at the Hideaway too more than a decade ago by now (my how time flies!)
Weingarden Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I have a 12-inch metal Sound Inc. acetate I found in Detroit that has both sides of Bernie Moore, both sides of Vivian Jones, and two sides by someone named Little Vance. Only other writing/info on the thing is the word Camaro. 2
Mace Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Is it just me who finds this record somewhat boring and repetitive 30 seconds after the intro......? 1

Robbk Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) I have confirmed (without a doubt) that Lark Records was a Detroit label that was connected under the umbrella of Detroit's Sound, Inc. Production company. Brothers, Danny and Larry Lick (Pavelik), and their cousin, country/rockabilly singer, Johnny Powers (Pavelik), (all Detroiters) owned it. Ernest Kelly may have been involved at some time). It was located Northeast of Detroit. Sound Incorporated had more than 20 labels affiliated to it, including: Sound, Universal Sound. Sound City, Velgo, Lark, Thump, Sidra, W.I.G., Amon, Poo Pan, Drifter, Walker, Cupid, Keepsake, Lusty, Monee, Radio, Oceanside, Fink and Trash Records. It had it's own rcording studio and pressing plant. Here is a link to a thread we had on Soulful Detroit Forum some years ago, in which the owners Detroit's Pavelik Brothers, including Johnny Powers, and their headquarters' address (in the Greater Detroit Area), and listing all the labels involved: https://faac.us/adf/m...html?1237305322 The SI pressing number series is the same as all the other Sound, Inc. -related labels use (as I stated above), they had their own pressing plant.
