Marc Forrest Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Found their website , somebody already asked them if they were the same group on Coconut Grove but no answer as yet !! as theres no cecil washington to be found in the line up it cant be the same group who recorded for coconut groove especially as they were from Flint, Michigan and not NC or Kentucky ;)
Marc Forrest Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 (edited) No there Soul Inc, are they the group that did "Teardrops" ?? The Soul Inc of "Teardrops" fame were from Virginia and called Soul Brothers Inc. The vocals on the Salem 45 are sung by the Carter Brothers. Edited August 26, 2012 by Marc Forrest 1
Garethx Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 (edited) The lead singer is Ron Trombley, also the drummer in the band. No connection whatsoever to Soul Inc. from the Carolinas pictured above. Edited August 26, 2012 by garethx
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I Don't Like To Lose was a white singer first
Chalky Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 as theres no cecil washington to be found in the line up it cant be the same group who recorded for coconut groove especially as they were from Flint, Michigan and not NC or Kentucky ;) Cecil wasn't in Soul Incorporated either, he simply helped out on the track.....
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Bill Tuthill was the writer and sing of IDLTL but wouldn't sign a contract to work in the studio, Cecil did and was given the song to over vocal also to sing live at a few local gigs. He went on to produce quiet a few records on Prophonics and Coconut after that. 1
Marc Forrest Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 (edited) Cecil wasn't in Soul Incorporated either, he simply helped out on the track..... well he did more than just help out, he wrote it and sang it... Edited August 27, 2012 by Marc Forrest

Premium Stuff Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I'm confused now - did Cecil Washington actually sing lead vocal on the released version of IDLTL or was he just credited on the label as the singer? Cheers Richard
Guest Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Is this the same group ? If so anyone know what the album's like albeit " live " ? Different group and that LP isn't that good...covers of obvious tunes...you can move it on downn your wants list for sure
Popular Post Guest Posted August 27, 2012 Popular Post Posted August 27, 2012 This is what I wrote about it back in October 2000 when reviewing it for Shades Of Soul fanzine: I've collected Northern avidly for over twenty years now and believe me when I tell you that to me this is one of the finest examples of that genre that I've ever come across. Immaculate instrumentation, great vocal performances and a wonderful lyric in fact it ran a close second to Chuck Jackson's "Hand it over" as the record that my wife was to walk down the aisle to! For the anoraks among us (and let's face it if you've bought this fanzine you might just well be one), I have to point out that it has the "Mastered at Frankford & Wayne" and the "ARP" stamps in the run out grooves! The label address/credits/layout/numbering system run hand in hand with the "Prophonics" label out of Mt.Morris, Michigan thus its from the same stable as Searling's old Wigan monster, "Joe Matthews - I don't like to lose", which of course is really "The Group featuring Cecil Washington". Indeed, Cecil is present again on this disc not only as the second vocal to enter the song (duetting with an unknown male vocal), but he also wrote and co-produced it as well, the talented so and so. Recent research tracked down Soul Inc.'s old manager, who credited the lead voice as "Bobby someone or other"Â - time will hopefully reveal his identity. So, what's it like tight drumming and stroking guitar work are complemented by an organ breathing away, as it builds and just gets better and better. "Sit yourself down dear, I've got something to say. Girl we have been living right, things have been going right and started to go our way. We've got blessings to be counted girl, true love has been founded on a solid foundation (enter Cecil) with every indication that it will last as years go pass, temptations may mount, but I will never cheat on you, no I won't." FANTASTIC, but it gets even better, "Now that we know for sure, that our love will always endure, now that you have fulfilled my life, I'm asking you to be my wife. This is my proposal". Let us hope that he gets what he wants and that she'd accept his declaration of undying love. For us punters who still like to throw ourselves around the dance floor it has a perfect Northern instrumental break and a couple of crucial key change chucked in for good measure as well. https://www.anorakscorner.com/DiscReviews2.html 5
Chalky Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 well he did more than just help out, he wrote it and sang it... Yes but that doesn't make him part of the group and he only sang part of the harmony, not the lead. I doubt he is in any group photos?
Chalky Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I'm confused now - did Cecil Washington actually sing lead vocal on the released version of IDLTL or was he just credited on the label as the singer? Cheers Richard Sure Cecil said elsewhere on here that when The Group laid the track down the vocal just wasn't good enough. Cecil then laid his vocal down and that is what they went with hence the "Featuring Cecil Washington."
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 (edited) Great Dave, so its a Bobby, Bob or even a Robert from Detroit? Humm. Lynn & The Invaders is almost the same backing but with a beach bongo style song on prophonics. Edited August 27, 2012 by Prophonics 2029

Chalky Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 to me its a cecil record. will always be. Even though he isn't necessarily a member of the group?
Pete S Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Hey Russ, you wanted someone to name you a better record than this costing under £500, I could name you a thousand better records than this under £500. Make that five thousand. Except I haven't got time. Is this better than Al Kent - The way you've been acting lately, for instance? Is it better than "Please let me in"? 3
Markw Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 Now that's a different debate altogether Pete........
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Tho its not the Cecil produced version. Caus they have similar backing I wonder if this is the band. Edited August 28, 2012 by Prophonics 2029
Simsy Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 So Rob Marriott, Gasher, Bearsy, Dave Abbott, Butch ......
Marc Forrest Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Even though he isn't necessarily a member of the group? yes, cause he wrote it, had a hand in the production and can be heard singing as well.
Chalky Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 yes, cause he wrote it, had a hand in the production and can be heard singing as well. I'll give you first two, as for singing there's a few singing harmony and not sure how you can tell who is who let alone distinguish Cecil's voice.
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) So Rob Marriott, Gasher, Bearsy, Dave Abbott, Butch ...... Whazzat Copys? Keith Money, Carl willingham ?, Dez Parker not Butch, Mick H sold his. Edited August 28, 2012 by Prophonics 2029
Simsy Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Whazzat Copys? Keith Money, Dez Parker not Butch, Mick H sold his. That's seven then including Mick's copy?
Marc Forrest Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I'll give you first two, as for singing there's a few singing harmony and not sure how you can tell who is who let alone distinguish Cecil's voice. Taken from Flynny`s (nice) review "Indeed, Cecil is present again on this disc not only as the second vocal to enter the song (duetting with an unknown male vocal), but he also wrote and co-produced it as well, the talented so and so. Ted Massey Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 never heard Des play it dont think he has it
Garethx Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Far more than seven copies of this knocking about. The information about Ron Trombley being the drummer and vocalist in the band is taken from a youtube clip and is apparently from Ron's son. Mr Trombley is still about and still heavily involved with music in Flint (primarily country these days). It shouldn't be beyond the collective wit of the scene to get in touch with him and get some concrete answers surely?
Marc Forrest Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 "meanwhile on the other side of the ocean in a small community named Flint the local phone system refused to work and finally gave up as too many phone calls all of a sudden not from out of nowhere but from the English midlands tried to get thru to a local number of a houshold named Trombley. Mr. Trombley himself didnt knew what all that fuzz was about especially not as he was so much into C&W these days and all these foreigners were asking him for an obscure Soul 45 he once did about 45 years ago now as a session musician for a guy from the neigborhood called Cecil Washington. He just couldnt take it so he decided to switch off his phone"...

I can hear him Marc, but you wouldn't know from Adam who it was if Cecil hadn't said he comes in there. You said as there is no Cecil in the photograph it can''t be them (referring to the Soul, Inc photo), I'm saying you won't find a photo of them with him in as he wasn't part of the group, he simply helped with harmony whilst arranging the record in the studio as have many arrangers and producers before him. Doesn't make it a Cecil Washington record, that does the group a disservice, IMO of course....of to listen to something decent to get this out of my head now.
Marc Forrest Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 ....of to listen to something decent to get this out of my head now. how about the prophonics 45 then ? ....................LOL I`ll stop now ;)
Guest Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Far more than seven copies of this knocking about. Agree with you, Gareth...defo in double figures and may be pointless trying to name who has it as a few have gone through eBay and disappeared into collections unknown. I also recall being told at the time that the manager was tracked down, that the label owenrs fell behind with the rent on their offices, so loads of stock was simply ditched (Coconut Groove, Prophonics, Washington Square), so only the copies sent to local DJs, giveaways to family and friends and a tiny bit of stock given to stores are in circulation. I still have mine and love it as much as the first time I heard it...it is a superb production, arrangement and all-round performance. Each to their own though. Edited August 11, 2014 by Flynny

I hear you Pete & whilst the records you have quoted are fantastic in thier own right, you can hear em any where at any time, whilst I may have been over exuberent with my comment, I'd hope that you would get my drift kinda.... Its a good Northern Soul record that I have never tired of, mainly cos it isnt thrashed to death. Russ
Chalky Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 how about the prophonics 45 then ? ....................LOL I`ll stop now ;) its a better record
Simsy Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Mr Trombley is still about and still heavily involved with music in Flint (primarily country these days). The Flint Tones ..
Guest Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Tho its not the Cecil produced version. Caus they have similar backing I wonder if this is the band. Don't think so Tony...it is supposed to be a larger mixed-race outfit. That YouTube clip is different from that groups (Incredible Invaders) Prophonics 45...is that the Washington Square release mix? Edited August 28, 2012 by Flynny

I still have mine and love it as much as the first time I heard it...it is a superb production, arrangement and all-round performance. Each to their own though. dont think its conciderably moire than about ten +/- one or two but as you say pointless and a question to be answered only theoretically. Anyway dear Mr Flynny...it was you indeed who I heard it first play at those precious days back at the Dome.
Tricky Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Obscure Soul record my arse! Its rare pop. It may be rare Northern. But it ain,t Soul. 3
Garethx Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I don't agree that it is 'pop'. I think it's a genuine example of 'blue-eyed soul'.
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Arther fenn + another I know had 2 of the ebay ones but Arther's isnt on popsike, had the date on. Edited August 28, 2012 by Prophonics 2029
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) No prophonics like the copy you had, one on you tube is the fenton. I have a complete listing of the discs I can send you. Bill T told me he dated one of the singers on IDLTL an athletic sporty girl. Don't think so Tony...it is supposed to be a larger mixed-race outfit. That YouTube clip is different from that groups (Incredible Invaders) Prophonics 45...is that the Washington Square release mix? Edited August 28, 2012 by Prophonics 2029

Guest Bearsy Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 That's seven then including Mick's copy? Fred Kroll and Kev Spittle has an alternat take I believe
