Jaco Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I don't remember it being marketed as contemporary a release at the time (1985). The Japan Victor release also came out in 1982 which was three years before the US pressing on Blues R&B and out of the 10 tracks only three were contemporary although they may have been recorded earlier. I also got "Soul Man Live In Japan" on Rooster Blues at the same time, which too was a US/Canadian release of a Japanese release of a couple years earlier. Stone him, Stone him, Stone him........ Some of my favourite LP's not already mentioned are and IMO not one dodgy track on any. Swamp Dogg - Total Destruction of Your mind - Canyon Don Covay - Super Dude I - Mercury Luther Ingram - Do You Love Somebody - KoKo Ann Peebles - I Cant Stand The Rain - Hi Paul Kelly - Don't Burn Me - WB Modulations - It's Rough Out Here - Buddah Jimmy Hughes - Something Special - Volt Mavis Staples - Only For The Lonely - Volt Darrel Banks - Here To Stay - Volt Eddie hinton - Very Extremely Dangerous - Capricorn Otis Clay - Trying To Live My Life Without You - Hi Don Bryant - Precious Soul - Hi (Thie best set of covers I've ever heard) Impressions - Young mods Forgotten Story - Curtom Impressions - This is My Country - Curtom Leroy Hutson - Love Oh Love - Curtom Natural Four - Heaven Right Here On Earth - Curtom Natural Four - Natural Four - Curtom O'Jays - Ship Ahoy - PIR The list goes on........ Yes, yes, yes to the Natural Four and "Young mods forgotten story" John.

Mick Sway Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) len barry, its that time of the year lp on uk brunswick, featuring,"ill always need you" played at the casino by richard searling.. Len Barry "Its that time of the year" must be one of the rarest, would think that everyone knows Richard's "left on roof of car" story. Surprisingly it's now available on Amazon as a MP3. Not sure whether some of the choices fit the spirit of Doug's post though. The topics been well covered many times over the years but always turns up something a bit different. Here's and to previous threads. Spyder Turner's "Stand By Me" is not particularly rare, but features a number of LP only tracks: Edited August 21, 2012 by Mick Sway

Scotters Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Although top 10 or top 20 of anything is of course completely down to personal taste, I love these type of threads and always learn from them or get inspired to look up an LP or 45 or artist info / spend the kid's inheritance on alternative investments. Some truly great LP's noted so far, some I have and some I've added to the list. Can't see any of these having a mention, which I love listening to when I can. Bobby Taylor - Taylor Made Soul Willie Hutch - Soul Portrait Dee Dee Warwick - Foolish Fool Ronn Matlock - Love City Gloria Scott - What am I gonna do Barbara Lewis - The many grooves of Barbara Lewis All the best, Steve. 1

Jim G Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) Well for me I have been playing The Spellbinders and The Tempests at home today, but as great as they are, the LP that will always be mt favourite is the Motown Memories LP with 6 x 6, Helpless etc. I put it on after the aforementioned two albums and this one still does it for me after over 40 years of listening to it. This one : Edited August 22, 2012 by jim g 1
ricticman Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Hard one to answer this, but the last lp I'd probably ever get shot of would be ' World ! Here comes Jean Wells ' on Sonet. Beautiful soulful tracks. Anyone like this as much as I do ? 2
Guest Brett F Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 (edited) One of my favourites; Alice Clark, 'Alice Clark' ( Mainstream Records )... The trouble with album collecting is that in many cases there are only one or two stand out tracks, but the Alice Clark is heavy on quality material. Also enjoy two of the Terry Callier LP's.. 'What Color Is Love' ( Cadet ) and 'I Just Can't Help Myself' (Cadet ) . Edited August 22, 2012 by Brett F

Guest Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 John, Surely Otis Clay's "The Only Way Is Up" LP was released, promoted and marketed in the early 80's in the US & Japan as a new, contemporary release even though certain tracks had previously been released on other labels several years earlier ... while the Sandra Wright LP was very obviously a compilation originating in the UK on Demon Records of previously released and newly discovered material , and it was clearly marketed as such , wasn't it ? Not that any of that matters as far as the musical quality is concerned ... they are both great LPs of course !!! In fact, and I've said it before on here several times, the only way to play out Otis Clay's "The Only Way Is Up" is off the said original LP because the sound quality is so unbelievably good, loud and clear, and it doesn't have the nasty hiss and jump at the start which most the 45's seem to have. And YES... it is absolutely OK to play the original LP ahead of the original 45 ... even at an OVO event !!! I paid quite a bit of money for that on Japanese release from City Sounds. Much better quality than the 7"
Ncfc Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Suprised Bobby Wilsons-"I'll be your rainbow" has not been mentioned yet.
Chalky Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Lifestyle is great Kev Wilkiam Bell - Coming Back.... Van McCoy and Friends - Dancin' And dunno if allowed although they are old tracks, Tyrone Ashley's Funky Music Machine Let Me Be Your Man on Truth and Soul from a few years ago.
Mike Lofthouse Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Dells-Mighty mighty Dells-Cadet (US issue) Kev strange how this album - despite having the same cover - has different tracks on the UK vs US copies. I had a sealed copy of the US copy for years I never opened because I had the UK copy and then by chance I noticed their version of 'Nothing Can Stop Me' (the Cissy Houston song) on the US copy!!!! Mike
Mick Sway Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 It's Time For the Swiss Movement: This 1973 RCA " It's Time For the Swiss Movement" album, was arranged by Motown arranger, David Van de Pitte. Apart from Cornelius Grant and (no doubt through the Van de Pitt Motown connection), the credits also boast input from Temp's Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams.Apparently they supported The Temps on tour. Members were: Ronald Williams,Arthur Booker Jr,Herbert Clifton,John Hodges.

Chalky Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Excellent topic. I'm just starting to buy more LP's, they have really never interested me in the past for some reason. 45's will probably go in near future and I will collect solely LP's, some good recommendations here 1

Van McCoy and Friends - Dancin' And dunno if allowed although they are old tracks, Tyrone Ashley's Funky Music Machine Let Me Be Your Man on Truth and Soul from a few years ago. Why shouldn't it be allowed, a superb album, plus isn't the fantastic ' Can't Stay Away' previously unreleased ?, always find it hard to believe some fans of soul music ( we are fans aren't we ) ignore albums, it's music all the same no matter the format, so many good album only tracks, plus an ever increasing amount of unreleased material being released via the 33rpm record, the Numero group consistently deliver the goods as do others, plus then we have a heritage of a good 45 plus years to draw on as well, glad to hear you are buying LP's, but why get rid of the 45's ?, enjoy both. Brett PS.. I loved Steve Plumbs LP only spots at Essence, so much that i followed his trail and had great fun a few years back playing for around 2 hours in Wakefield spinning either alternate LP versions of 45's or LP only tracks.

Mal C Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I havent read all this thread, but someone might have mentioned those fabulous comps from the 8ts? I remember thinking of the ten top Northern lps I'd want to get in the early 9ts, and went out and got them, but kent and soul supply LP's were pretty much all I could afford in the early to late 8ts Soul Class of 66 For collectors only for collectors also A whole lot of soul is here Under the street lamp I think I can safely say these Lps pretty much changed my life music wise, it took a bit with the kent Tommy Hunt LP, but I persisted. Bobby Blands Piece of gold on UK action, and the Action LP, the one with Weller notes... Seminal slabs of 12 vinyl !! Mal.C
Guest Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Only mention thus far for this mighty slab...The New Sounds on US Turbo (P.Vine Japan)...packed with quality...here's a link to a picture of the seldom seen US original on Turbo: https://www.anorakscorner.com/SalesPage7.html
