Popular Post Philt Posted August 20, 2012 Popular Post Posted August 20, 2012 I think there's a whole field of study called "economics" that would disagree with you. However, I agree with your general point that there's no simple rule in pricing records. Also, this argument comes up all the time, it's the next "OVO" thread. The psychology is fun too but a tad worrying: heuristics and related stuff re utility and value, frames & the impact of formulation effects i.e. emotive auction descriptors, memories associated with a record push buttons and we're away with the fairies ie. it's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it ... depends on a. What they can afford and b. what they think the pay off for them will be. B can and does go some way towards overriding A = barking mad We're mostly nuts and sometimes behave accordingly, despite / even when we know it's nuts: because what we think we're gonna get out of it somehow outweighs what we have to give to get it. A beautiful thing, nuts though. Ps. I'm on holiday and bored sh*tless btw. Just read that back ... I promise I'm not THAT big a c*ck. Anyway, i blame those bloody price guides, the interthing and the kid who sold me those marbles 4
Guest Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 (edited) And that all sounds perfectly reasonable. However, bringing it back to the original point of the thread, would you still have made the £150 offer if the same record (in the same condition) was immediately available from a trusted and respected top-end dealer for, say, £125? If I'm honest Peter, probably not...especially with the seller I am dealing with. Here is an explanation of what would at first appear to be either BS or just madness. I tend to return to the sellers who I have had positive deals with. I've not always had that with 'trusted and respected top-end dealers' There are a few on here like Mark W , Des Parker, Sebastian (Preban) and possibly a few more I've forgot to mention that I do trust (not saying they are the trusted & top end dealers) but people I'll return to. The extra few quid would give me peace of mind, I trust these people and I know what I will be getting. The recent loss of okehdokeh on here is a real loss to buyers imho. He is the guy I've been talking to about the Four Pro's. I did offer him the £150 and he sent a message back saying that was too much. He then posted it down the next day without us coming to any agreement on the figure. I've never met this guy and he lives miles away so I am going to bump him But seriously, as a regular customer of his I can say sending records without payment is typical of him. He has sent before telling me to have a listen and see what I think before paying; even though I know his grades are going to be spot on... and he always included scans & recordings on here of the actual records for sale. Whenever he has listed records and I have contacted him, very often he reduces the price and often throws in an extra record as a freebie (a freebie was in with the Four Pro's). Even if he didnt reduce the price the extra couple of quid is worth it to build an ongoing trusting relationship - again with okehdokeh, he has let me have expensive records on a payment plan... sometimes over a 3 month period (I think he will be a great loss to the Sales section on this site ) So for the extra £15 the op was talking about, or even the £25 you mention I would probably stick to the people I know and trust...not just for the discounts I get from people like Okeh (or Mark W who has knocked the postage off in the past) ... but the piece of mind ... one of my biggest bugbears is bad graders and I seem to have had my fair share of them Hope that explains my reasoning regards, mike p.s. I paypal'd okehdokeh the £150 - as a gift and paid the fees ... as i see it, swings & roundabouts (free records & discounts) Edited August 23, 2012 by mikecook 2

Kris Holmes Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 why on earth would he leave? everyone here is so chill, there's no dramatic or argumentive personalities at all? seems like a bit of a rash move to me?! 1
Guest Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 why on earth would he leave? everyone here is so chill, there's no dramatic or argumentive personalities at all? seems like a bit of a rash move to me?! I have no idea why Kris, I didn't ask. Knowing Paul through countless conversations via pm he is a very chilled guy and one of the nicest people I've yet to meet. As I say, I have no idea why but I would put money on it not being involved in any dramas or arguments, he just doesn't strike me as that type of guy.
Mike Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 yep, he just asked for his account to be closed one day, wasn't aware myself of reasons but as had already edited a lot of his past posts blank, took it as a fairly definite request cheers mike

Guest Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I was hoping to see some sort of comment to my reasoning of paying a little extra to get the peace of mind that I would get in knowing the records will be as graded
Chalky Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I was hoping to see some sort of comment to my reasoning of paying a little extra to get the peace of mind that I would get in knowing the records will be as graded You shouldn't have to pay extra though should you? If it is advertised as whatever grade that is how it should arrive. I can understand your reasoning but like I say you shouldn't have to. I think most by now know how the bad graders are and who the good graders are. If you know them as a person you can usually get a good feeling as to how they will behave as a seller as well.
Guest Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) no you shouldnt Chalky but its a sad fact. And i've seen the results if anyone dares to say anything. I have said about bad grading before but have been shot down with comments of 'records are graded on look, not what they play like'. I've binned records that have been graded as EX+ because they were unplayable. I've also seen dealers make public on here emails that have been sent asking for their money back due to poor grading ... the result is that a huge amount of people then comment to how fantastic the person is and would never sell a record poorly graded (or whatever was wrong with it) ... as if mistakes cant be made. i bought one ex+ record that had a cue burn at the start and had a hairline crack all the way through. I think it was £60 I paid for it but bought another copy and sold the cracked one for £20 or 25 (i informed the buyer of its condition). it just seemed easier than contacting the seller and getting drawn into the type of thing i've mentioned and would have not got anywhere as the seller seems to justify a wrong by having a 'gang' say how great he is. bad grading happens all over and i always feel anxious about buying from the states on ebay due to the amount of bad graders. if its only £20 record it just seems too much hassle to return it, so again i return to trusted sellers on there. I've only had an hours sleep (leg cramps) and am making mistakes in spellings and have to keep rectifying them so will leave it for no but will give you an update (after i've had a little nap) on the message i received from okehdokeh this morning Edited August 24, 2012 by mikecook
Benji Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 it just seemed easier than contacting the seller Mike, this is stupid, just plain stupid.
Chalky Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Mike if I had sufferd in a deal, i.e. didn't get what I paid for or wasn't as described I would say something and I wouldn't give a t*ss how wonderful they are, that is no excuse for bad business. But I would do all I could to sort with the seller before going public on here and I would also leave a negative in feedback. If I'd paid £60 for a record described as ex+ but suffered with cue burn AND had a hairline crack I definitely would sort it with the seller. I'd definitely let everyone know as well.
