Hello there,

Originally from Mansfield, UK but recently moved out to New York. Desperate to find a northern venue over here. Is anybody aware of any venues or even if there is a northern soul scene here. There used to be a monthly soul nite "Subway Soul" in the City but that stopped around last May.

Daz,

Matt (Weingarden on here) has a do every Wed 10-2:30 at the Botanica, NYC. I've not been yet but he told me that he plays a bit of allsorts soul wise including some northern. I'm in Albany and will make it down one of these weeks.

Hi Sean,

Great. Thanks very much. I'll check it out.

Pop into the bar next door on the left, Milanos, proper old school ny bar, had many mad hilarious nights there !

I'm around here periodically! Dropped Daz a PM on our Dig Deeper goings-on, which at the moment involve an October 13 show with the Green Berets (aka Walter & the Admeration's) and Tony Middleton.

Definitely go to Botanica if you are around NYC on a Wednesday night - Matt's night is always top notch for hearing a broad range of stellar soul!

Haven't been back to New York for about 2 years now, so sorry if this is so out of date as to be useless:

Lost and Found out in Brooklyn at Savalas bar was running every Tuesday. Can't find the link to Lost and Found's website, think they had something on Facebook, but here's a review of Big City Records which Jared and Chris who DJ at L&F run. The review comes over very 'breakbeat' (?) orientated, but they do play a lot of really good crossover and have a great range of 45s in the store itself.

Be warned though, typically the venue is a tiny bar, with a room of sorts at the back, still very small, and although people do dance there's limited space, limited seats, and as entrance is often free you are of course expected to be buying drinks as far as the bar owners are concerned.

Seemed like a very varied clientele, some of whom had probably just stumbled by the bar and fancied a drink, others fairly young and clearly into the range of music being played. Rarely got going before 10 at the earliest (although you might miss the DJ playing the best Soul - I caught the end of Honeydripper who played some blinders).

I posted a set of photos of various 2nd hand record shops around the city on Flickr.

Hope you have a great time living over there.

Big City Records on E 12th Street is closing on September 1st. :(

I was at the Botanica Bar two summers ago.... kind of a basement vibe, very minimal... djs were playing good stuff from what I remember. You can also check out some great films down the street on West Houston.... Bleeker St. is also fairly close for record shopping

Sad to hear Big City is closing up, a real loss.

Will still be trading online (of course!) and I think their New Jersey shop is continuing - which I'd imagine is mostly there for buying stock! :g:

Dave,

Would definitely have come down for the night, however I'm back in the UK that week for the York all dayer (djing) and the Peebles weekender. Good luck with the night, sure it will be brilliant.
