Russ Vickers Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 New Discoveries 6ts/7ts Northern & Rare Soul: Ok, we have plenty of talk about new discoveries, so what about a discussion on recent discoveries or the lack of them...shall we say over the last 2 years ?. Have all the good 6ts/7ts dried up, or are there still plenty out there, & just needs someone to be in a position to expose them properly. 'All the good 6ts tunes have been discovered' -This was the main driving force behind Stafford & the DJ team that went about proving that statement wrong....we all look back on Stafford as an iconic venue, breaking masses of new tunes & breaking the mould, but there really was an air that the 'good' records had been already discovered, prior to the Top of the World & also the legenday 100 Club Nighters - So c'mon Soul Sourcers, tell us about ya new discoveries or new discoveries that are being played at your fave venue or by your fave DJ....there are no restrictions on rariety, just good soulful dance records that fit the Northern/Rare Soul criteria.... & play nice pse people Russ
Dobber Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 stumbled on these in the last couple of years,i think they are unknown. 3
Dylan Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 harper bros is known for this side and also for the ballad which may be a low rider song ? the ballad is realy good not so sure about this side myself I don't think its good enough but thats just my opinion.
boba Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 the ballad on the harper bros is just okay imo, very doowoppy. not well known though.
boba Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 There are good "unknown" 60s northern records btw... 1
Dobber Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 the harper bros 45 is a decent enough tune, the chorus and organ break make the record, however,i reckon its quite a rare item so it probably wont see any decent deck action, the tune could be a good nighter play! the sun & rain tune again is a decent x/over tune but not likely to get some action other than blasting it at home!
Dylan Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I just picked up an ernie rivers on knox that appears to be pretty much unknown. no turntable set up at the minute so not sure what it sounds like i've not heard it yet. fingers crossed its a good one.

Popular Post Greg Belson Posted August 6, 2012 Popular Post Posted August 6, 2012 Big spin for me over the last year or so......United Sounds 'It's all over (baby)' 8
Greg Belson Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 nice tune,is that the actual label? No....that's a mock up done by the youtube poster, cos that particular soundfile was used from an online radio show.

Dobber Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 80's 90's 00's,not heard anything from these decades,im sure there is plenty of good stuff, but for me its the 60's stuff,im still trying to get use to the 70's stuff haha!
Tony A Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Whats wrong with the 80's 90's and 00's The clue may be in the original posters title, New discoveries 6Ts & 7Ts.

Patto Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Take a look at the recent underplayed and under £50 thread. This turned up a tonne of brill under played and unknown by many records.Still hundreds of records that deserve their day in the sun some great dancers out there no real need for new discoveries just start experimenting with whats already available. 3
Dobber Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 thats right, sometimes the desire to hunt for the new overshadows whats already under your nose, there is also plenty of b-sides getting a chance, for example the flip to john bowie on merben! 1
Dunc Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Russ I went to the last Burnley allnighter and for the first four hours there were loads of underplayed 60s uptempo soul records being spun. I recognised a few and they were only £30 records in the day. But from a refreshing point of view it was great to listen to something new. The only problem was that the first two DJs did not use the mic so you did not know the names of the tunes. But they did play some good stuff......a breath of fresh air!.....and thank you, if you read this post. I will try and add one of mine if I can work out how to do it. Ha Ha Dunc 1
Dunc Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Here it is (hopefuly) Not my copy but taken from somewhere else 1
Dunc Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) Here's another one. This is credited as Willie & West ( on the tube) which was from a second issue Lp made in the 70s. The original was an Lp only track by Willie and the Mighty Magnificents on an All Platinum LP. It was played briefly in the 70s at the Casino by Keith Minshull which made nearly £300 on an auction site lately Again this is off the tube, no sign of the All Platinum copy Edited August 6, 2012 by dunc
Garethx Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 The Willie & West hardly falls into the unknown category. Played by Levine at the Mecca and been a collected album ever since. I'm speculating but guess that dozens if not hundreds of copies have passed through the UK soul scene in the last couple of decades. I'm also not sure that the Willie & Mighty Magnificents version is the original one as you claim. Some Willie and West tracks were re-issued with some Mighty Magnificents tracks on a Japanese P-Vine album in about 1980. The version of GAFMG is, if I remember, slightly different.
Garethx Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Again, the JT Carter record has been collected for about twenty five years. This is the b-side of Closer To Your Heart and is probably even worse.

The Wilie & Mighty Magnificents is the original LP and very rare, it is on All Platinum. The Willie & West is a 70s probably made by members of the band and is a reissue and there probably are loads of copies of that. That is why the All Platinum LP made good money on an auction site and I have one.
Popular Post Steve G Posted August 6, 2012 Popular Post Posted August 6, 2012 Madness thread Russ! The alternate version of "Get Away" does indeed feature on the rare Wille & Magnificents album "Very Soulful" but that was released on All Platinum AFTER the Willie & West album. 1

I agree with you about that, But your average northern souler who went to Wigan or Stafford would not know it as it was played for the other side. Not at Wigan or Stafford but maybe near where you live. The 100 CluB is where I went to in the 80s n they did have their own sounds there like Wigan did
viphitman Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) I have been spinning the sun & rain over a year in Hamburg + @ hip city once and it went down very well everytime !!!! If ya spin it to an open minded crowd with some known northern with a similar tempo it works a treat. But as always newish tunes have to be mixed in quite nicely in order to work.... But for me a current biggie is this marc Forrest spin altough he has been spinning it for some time !!!!! and lots of stuff played at the last Hip City Anniversary !!!! Garethx Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 This topic is supposed to be about 'unknowns'. The JT Cater is a known record. Your assertion that "your average northern souler who went to Wigan or Stafford would not know it" is bonkers. Who in their right mind would flag up a genuinely unknown 'scene-worthy' record on this thread?

viphitman Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) oh another newish 70's modern tune probably not everyone's cup of tea but i really do like it and played it out a couple of times is the fat jack band !!! Edited August 6, 2012 by viphitman 2
Mister Fish Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 The United Sounds is one of the best things to found in recent years. The best era to look for is probably the 70's. Still unearthing complete unknowns from this time. Over the last couple of years the best I found was Ishola Muhammed on Guess but there are a whole bunch more. Several of which I have as c/up's.
Steve G Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 The United Sounds is one of the best things to found in recent years. Who is the other version by? It's on the tip of my tongue.....

Guest Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Madness thread Russ! Close it down before it descends into another 'bitchslap fest' between the half dozen or so who are genuinely interested One mans known another mans unknown.....one mans newie another mans oldie - not to mention the ladies - and so the thread goes on....and on.... Russ...listen to Steve, it will all end badly with very few genuinely new discoveries being put forward because the people (often DJs) who found them are not overly keen on giving every other DJ details of a record they might have spent hours/days/weeks/years to find.
boba Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 so if someone were to post the identities of the unidentified "unknowns" in this thread, what would the consequences be?
Guest Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Nuclear war Bob, but it would be covered up as 'killer sunsets' .
KevH Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 isn't this a known funk record? "Hip breakin" is,but maybe not the side posted up."WIBM" is probably known, but falls into the "lack of exposure" quote that Russ initially posted.
Russ Vickers Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 I'm genuinely sorry if people dont think this is a worthy topic for a thread, but I thought it would be an interesting discussion at least...I was just trying to keep things upbeat & interesting/ I would add that one prominent DJ has already PM'd me two very good tunes that were unknown to me, so just for that alone it has been worth while. Anyhoo...lets let it run & see where it goes, keep it positive... Russ
Dylan Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 the ballad on the harper bros is just okay imo, very doowoppy. not well known though. our tastes must differ at times I think this is preyty good but i'm not always the biggest fan of records you think are very good.
Russ Vickers Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 BTW Thanks to everyone who has posted so far, United Sounds is awesome, stupid question, but anyone with a copy, pse wing it my way. Russ
Popular Post Russ Vickers Posted August 7, 2012 Author Popular Post Posted August 7, 2012 Ok, here's my contribution - not totally unknown I know, but extremely limited plays thus far & deserves a far higher exposure, I' lovin it & have had this a couple of years now maybe & play it at every opportunity.... 4

Wonder why didn't they share it on the board though, mate? Re; United Sounds....these things are always up for debate, but from my research, there's four copies currently known. One in the UK, two in the US, and I believe one in Europe. Currently very tough, to say the least.....if anybody knows of any other copies around, then I'd love to hear it!

Russ Vickers Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 Im still in Baghdad, but have a few things at home that might fit the bill...hopefully I'll be putting a mix together when Im next in the UK, so will include some lesser/unknown things too.... Best Russ

It's a potentially interesting topic but previous experience of similar topics is that they end up descending into the oldie/newie, ovo/boot debate far too quickly. To help make up for being miserable I'll add my contribution . I do not claim it's undiscovered, unknown etc.....just that I did not know it until about six months ago when I listened to a copy in Andy Dysons sales box and then bought it off him. Amsterdam Russ Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 A quick search on YouTube for 'unknown Northern Soul' brings back a play box full of results. Of course there are plenty of discoveries yet to be made. I'll bet that there are 100s, probably 1000s of tracks sitting in collections and unknown to all except the owner. Here's three that I've picked up in recent months (each of which I've shared here before): https://youtu.be/V9m_Vk8k3m8 https://youtu.be/F1gpk4B5jIc https://youtu.be/cumvDC3hiEw 2
Guest Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 'ere you go Russ, may not be strictly new discoveries, but I bet the x20 discs you've just inspired me to dig out are not known by all: 1
