The guy who wrote "Tie a yellow ribbon" -- new jersey based irwin levine -- produced a super obscure soul 45 by a group called rythms and blues. it's pretty good, a miracles rip off though. Anyone know any other soul productions he did?

just won 250 pounds worth of records lol come on kev pay up

Billy,

You may have lost - The above posts refer to "The Debonaires".

I think "The Debonairs" were a male group from Texas.

So which one of the two groups recorded "Why Pick On Me" on ORR? It's female but is it the same Debonaires - "How's Your New Love Treating You" on Golden World and if so why is it so rare?

I first heard it back in the early/mid 9t's when Guy H played it at The Birch's Thursday night sessions. I only know of a couple of copies, Guy's and Shane from London. Ultra rare but I do have a sound file of it (which sadly I promised never to post or send to anyone)

Anyone got any other info. on it??

"why pick on me" has nothing to do with those other groups, although it is vaguely related to the chicago doowop group the debonairs on ping. it is a chicago group, and they spell their name the Deboniers. I actually have two copies with different label variations.

You can't tell people that Bob !! You've just devalued that 45 by about 1000% !!!!!

Guess that turns it from rare soul to just ordinary soul, many NSers will have no interest in it anymore now.

The strange world of NS .... who found the 1st copy, who played it 1st & at which youth club ............. WHO CARES; well not me at least.

my copy is the only one without the logo that I've seen. I've been told that this group had members of the doowop group the Quintones on Park (who are from the same housing that the doowop group the Debonairs are from).

I had one without the logo aswell...was really thick vinyl as I recall. Fabulous record but far too slow and tricky to please the Northern dancefloors...IMO.

you keep telling me the thing about some sort of extra thick vinyl, but both copies are just (good) vinyl presses, nothing weird.

both have identical deadwax and are from the same plates btw

I asked a question based on my own 'limited' knowledge of the record. I do or did only know of the two copies and I have been informed of others now. It is a record I have spoke of often over the years and no one seemed to know of it hence me believing it to be rare. I personally don't give a monkeys whether a record is rare or not, I also don't give a hoot if it's 5k or £5.. If it's a magic tune then that's exactly what it is, simple! You haven't devalued anything for me as I have no idea of it's price.

Wish I'd never asked now lol

Thanks

The internet opens up some previously insular worlds of collecting. The record is still very rare, I happened to get one copy being in Chicago at the right place at the right time and I bought the other one on ebay (not for cheap). I think it's been on ebay 3 times over maybe a 10 year period. It was on my want list for a long time. My point is just that counting the number of copies is a pointless exercise because there might be 30 copies in people's collections (even if someone can only think of two in their circle) but the record could still be extremely rare. And the record is really good, I think you should post the track on youtube or soundcloud at this point so other people can hear it -- you might have promised not to circulate it but it's not a secret anymore and I can even send you audio of one of my copies if you want.

I've been looking for it for many years but obviously, thinking it was The Debonairs and not The Deboniers is the reason I couldn't get more info on it.

I'd never heard it for about 15 years until I got the sound file a few months ago and to be honest it sounded nothing like I remembered, still great though.

I'm not motivated by rarity or price in the slightest, I've collected for 26 years now, all stuff I love, lots of cheapies and some 'harder' to get tunes too.

Thanks again for putting me in touch with the facts! Curiosity sorted.

Take care. J x

The The Deboniers "WPOM" went through ebay not so long ago, $200.

Checked out the sales history earlier Chalky.. Know more about the record now, you know what Dave is like, dog with a bone. Just glad Bob corrected me on the spelling cos now I've found it. I hate this vinyl malarky why wasn't I born to collect porcelein dolls or furry gonks??
