Dayo Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Just dug out Dee Dee Sharp, Standing in the need of love. Haven't heard it in yonks. Don't know if this Wheel monster ever gets played nowadays, but to me it's gorgeousness personified.
Dayo Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Barry White production alright, was one of his first I think. B & S 1971, remember nicking it from shop I did my paper round in!!!!! Alan You naughty lad! I pride myself on ordering it from Boots (PT109?) and having my girlfriend nick it for me when it came in

Don't know if this Wheel monster ever gets played nowadays, but to me it's gorgeousness personified. Cristina Naggar used to give this a play at Valatone before she moved back to Italy. I think our very own Vinyl Vixen might have played this out once or twice too.
Guest Dan Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 so many, they're all oldies now but of well-known oldies, ten that have been constantly in my top twenty ever since i heard first them: Pyramid - Soul Bros Inc When I'm With My Baby - Magnetics Another Day - Ascots First Time - Embers Lonely For You Baby - Sam Dees You Don't Even Know My Name - Hy-Tones I Really Love You - Tomangoes I'm Comin Home - Lou Pride Carlena - Just Brothers Sweet Lover - Fortson and Scott dan

Don't know if this Wheel monster ever gets played nowadays, but to me it's gorgeousness personified. Have played this out a couple of times Good thread this, lots of things I've not listened to for ages, not that I'd want to hear them out all the time but sometimes forget how good they are. And one or two I didn't know, which is always nice!
Tomangoes Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Can there be a newie northern soul record? Anyway, from the point of records / oldies to me having 'joined' the scene in 1975, I will go for the ones that got me to sign up. All on the ultra rare 'black magic' label (£1 was a lot of dosh then). Spellbound - Tamiko Jones Going to a go go - sharonettes Out on the floor - Dobie Gray Ed
Guest musicden786 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Ouch..it's hard but can you really admit what your real favourite oldie is? Instead of stroking your chin and trying to think of a forgotten one why not take this opportunity to come clean and let us know your favourite proper oldie... I'll start the ball rolling with my personal favourite..dunno why but I love it but here it is: The Vonettes-Touch my Heart For me its got to be IF I COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME. The tune was used in the Vietnam War as code music for those in action. Not able to transmit, only able to recieve. Sent out by AFVN from a static station or by flying transmiters. Wonder if anybody looking at this thread knows the story of AFVN and the contribution there DJs made to making rare soul music popular from 1962, when they started at the Rex Hotel, into the 70s? Plenty of Northern got its first play from this Radio Station. AFVN is short for American Forces Vietnam Network. Great Thread. Enjoyed looking at everybodies choices. Denis.

Chalky Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 'asboannie' date='Jan 13 2006, 09:00 PM The Kittens, The kittens Three and The Love Kittens. What I ment to say was, are the three named above the same group or not. If ayone out there can help thanks. I do have some info on the kittens, but have misplaced it somwhere and can't find it. Pretty sure different groups... The Kittens emerged from Chicago's west side, forming around Farragut High school student 18 years old Bernice Wills and Marshall High students Thelma Mack and her cousin Laurel Ross bopth 19. Arranger/producer Johnny Pate signed the group to ABC-Paramount in 1964, as newly appointed Midwest A&R director for the label, a position created specifically for him. As the arranger for the Impressions, he and the label created a Chicago branch around 14th & Michigan to tap into the vibrant Chicago soul scene of the '60s. Their ABC Paramount singles include "I Got to Know Him" and "Lookie Lookie." Around 1968, they began recording for Chess, with "Aint No More Room," "Hey Operator," and "I've Got to Get Over You." Their other releases were "I Need Your Love Tonight" on the Don-El label and "Foolish Little Girl" on Grant.
