Ouch..it's hard but can you really admit what your real favourite oldie is? Instead of stroking your chin and trying to think of a forgotten one why not take this opportunity to come clean and let us know your favourite proper oldie... I'll start the ball rolling with my personal favourite..dunno why but I love it but here it is: The Vonettes-Touch my Heart

Formations - "At the top of the stairs"

Willie Tee - "Walkin' up a one way street"

Tams - "Hey don't don't bother me"

Elgins - "Heaven must have sent you"

4 records that took me from youth club to soul club, still hold great memories.:rolleyes:

Some more in the mix here...for me pure class.

Leroy Taylor - Oh Linda - Brunswick

First heard Oh Linda back in 71 or 72 at my youth club at the tender age of 14 and every time I hear it I am back there.

Can it please be revived, please , please, please.

Natural Four - I thought that you were mine (ABC version)

Magnetics - I have a girl

High Keyes - Living a lie

Interesting thread, is this also showing the time frame when people joined the scene.

Wheel memories from 1960's forum members

Torch/Casino from 1970's forum members

Stafford from 1980's forum members

Or are there a miss mash of tunes across decades in there, I personally listed the records that got me on the scene so I suppose they have a special meaning as oldies.

I suppose what should have happened with this thread was YOU should have put some meaning to your choices, other wise it's just a list of Classic Northern.

Example

See my earlier reply for MY OLDIES - These what I heard played in youth club and got me collecting.

First Choice - This is the House - First record I heard when I went to local soul club (1972)

Jeanette Harper was the first record I heard when I went through the door at the Casino (1974)

The Entertainer was often played at the end of the alternative nights at the Regency Hotel in Gillingham back in 82-83, loved it for years but never knew who it was and thought the words were lonely entertainer, for years I went into Barnaby recordings in Gillingham and sang this to them, of course they had no idea what it was LOL, eventually after many years a friend of mine recognised the tune and bought me a copy back from America on one of his record trips. I have managed to get this played at most of the nighters around the country for me now, and played it myself at a few do's

Three more I don't think have been mentioned....

Johnny Wyatt - This Thing Called Love

Jimmy McFarland - Lonely Lover

Moses Dillard - Pretty As A Picture

Memories :D:D ....

JOHNNY WYATT - THIS THING CALLED LOVE - one of the very best Northern Soul records of all time - in my opinion of course!!!

Couldn't agree more. Didn't Barry White produce it?

I remember Dave Godin tipping it in a B&S mag back around 71 along with Viola Wills I Got Love. Two storming sounds on UK president on big fat vinyl grooves.

This morning it was

The Adlibs - Nothing worse than being alone.

Tonight however all that could change. Like Brian says, we are lucky enough, not only to know them, but to have so blinkin many to choose from.

Northern wise, gotta be Linda Jones My Heart Needs A Break or Court Davis the Lover WHo Loves You Not.

Can't decide between the two...

I was going to say that I'd never heard this, but it seems to be one of those records you know. The only problem is that you never know who it is or what it's called! thumbsup.gif

Loads of them about Ian.

I dont know it....oh THIS one. I love it. Whats it called again? Out on the floor Mikey laugh.gif

I think Denbo has chosen my Fave tonight.

Christine Cooper. How long since I have listened to that? One of those tunes you just have to holler along to.

These days I'm loving My Heart Needs A Break equally as much as Just Can't Live My Life. Impossible to choose, but maybe the gorgeous harp in the latter just swings it.

Just now I'm playing...

Mel Brit - She'll come running back

This heart of mine - The Artistics

You're not loving a beginner - Jesse Fisher

Don't think I'll ever tire of those three!

Love the first two and have for the very first time heard Jesse Fisher. A newie for me. What a great tune.

Just playing Breakout - Mitch Ryder. A very old sound for me!

Jesse Fisher was a Midlands Monster around 74, probably big everywhere but my memory fails me.

Breakout.. the ultimate Youth Club record in Worcester circa 72. Real handdbag stuff. Odd; hated it then, but love it now.

I've just discovered a load of oldies Mark has saved on his computer.

Right now my fave is The Playthings - Stop What your doing

Just before it was Candy and the kisses - The 81. Hairs on neck time!!

My heart needs a break has always been a favourite of mine, it's one of those records with haunting qualities and the lyrics just mesmorize me.

I enjoy Just Can't Live My Life, but it doesn't appeal to me like My Heart does...

Barry White production alright, was one of his first I think. B & S 1971, remember nicking it from shop I did my paper round in!!!!! Some good stuff on President - also love Duettes - Every Beat of My Heart.
