Rich Buckley Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Get a grip all of you, only one singer songwriter who epitomised that sound....the late, great, Curtis Mayfield, my all time No.1 hero, bar none...........[and for those of you who know me quite well, I place him just slightly above the greats of welsh rugby - Phil Bennet, Barry John, JPR etc] Has there EVER been a more distinctive voice and influential person in the history of our scene? Personally I think not... Rich

Ged Parker Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 What about........PAUL ROBESON? Stevie Z Any black U.S. record dealer who says "Yeah I got one of them somewhere you can have it for five bucks" Steve Mancha or Emmanuel Laskey
Platters 81 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Curtis Mayfield.......also in the "best writer" category
jocko Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 All wrong, the answer is Lou Johnson. Though Curtis gets second for eloquence. Ady shame on you, you missed the chance for a plug for Kent product. Even more surprising than the omission of Mr Womack must be James Carr, so soulful it hurts especially now we so much know more about how painful his life was. I am going to play all 3 of the excellent James Carr cds I have on Kent (any commission payable in cd's Ady!!) Cheers Jock

But JC certainly turns a lot of connoisseurs on. His CDs sell like hot cakes.
SteveM Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Walter Jackson - nuff said! Spot on Phil. With Jackie Wison in second place.
Guest in town Mikey Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Sy Hightower Melvin Moore Jacky Beavers Big Dee Irwin Tommy Tate Levi Stubbs Sonny Munroe Nick Ashford Nat Cole Marvin Gaye Sonny Charles Ron Banks JJ Barnes Larry Hancock Joe Valentine Otis Clay Bobby Wommack Ray Charles I'm a fan of Ray Charles, but wouldnt have him down as having a great voice. I like the fact he sounds like he is on 150 fags a day (He was on a lot worse for many years). His voice is more of a bluesey hollarer than a soulful smooth Nat King Cole, and think thats where his popularity comes from. For me its almost a case of loving his records because he sounds like he shouldnt have a voice to sing with. If you catch my drift.
Ritchieandrew Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Male - Roy Hamilton. Female - Ty Karim. Male & Female - Sylvester (not the cat the singer) Regards Ritchie.
