Back up to 125th St in Harlem once again ......

Clyde McPhatter was spotted there in 1953 & signed by Atlantic Records.

Both Joe Tex & James Brown won Amateur Night there in the mid 50's.

Harold Melvin & the BlueNotes 1st appeared on the Apollo stage way back in 1960.

.... AND .... a certain 'local' was always topping the bill there ..........

The Vibrations were on once again, as was Bobby Sheen !!!

Gloria Lynn was on the US music scene for many years.

She had records released out of LA in the early 70's, but in the mid 60's she was playing live shows in New York.

I bet it was 'Hard Work' sitting through this January 1967 show .....

by all accounts, John had just been a big hit at the Monterey Jazz Festival (where his live act was recorded & released by Columbia on LP).

I only became aware of his stuff in the 70's (his big hit was in 76) ... but he 1st recorded at the start of the 60's !!!

Two ladies getting it on back in Jan 1974 ......

.. I didn't realise that Leata Galloway was performing (other than in musical plays) that early

... after all, she didn't land a record deal until the 1980's

Not a live club show, but a concert staged by ABC TV for broadcast purposes ...

.... just a pity that no one at ABC TV knew how to spell Rufus's name !!

Italian-American doo-wop group Vito & the Salutations only made a few soulful sides in the 60's ...

.... but their popularity with doo-wop fans kept them working in New York, even as late as 1974 .....

........... One of their best 60's outings ...........

If there were no live shows you fancied watching back in 74, you could always go record buying at J & R's ....

The shop still has a music department, though now it sells more electronic items (computers, smart phones, music systems, digi cameras, etc). Pleased to see they still have recording artists dropping in to their Manhattan CD store (I saw Dianne Reeves perform live there about 10 years back) ....... https://www.jr.com/category/music/

No straight up soulers on this bill ........

but Tommy Chong (Cheech & Chong) hadn't long quit Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers ....

... and Brian Auger had run UK mod soul group Steampacket in the mid 60's.

Mind you, I bet Smashy & Nicey think "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is soulful !!

Atlantic Records were obviously increasing record sales in 1974 by helping promote live shows their artists were undertaking in New York ...

You could catch one of Philly's finest sweet soul groups and a jazzy guy in April ....

Lloyd Price's Turntable Club in Manhattan had been operating for around 6 years by 1974.

People were taking the place for granted by then, so the name was changed to give it a new lease of life.

Not long after the 52nd St venue (1674 Broadway) got it's name change, a new disco opened a few blocks away (on 45th St in Manhattan) ........... guess what it's name was ..........
