Guest Andy Kempster Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 i have picked up a couple of releases from this label recently which are really hitting the spot for me...big ella and bobby rush has anyone got any recommendations from the same label?
Steve Edgar Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 If you like the mid-tempo crossover sound then I'd recommend Bettye Jean Plummer "Baby I Want You Back" coupled with a brill version of the standard "I Believe" and only a cheapie steve
Robbk Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 The Francis Burr has a couple bluesy cuts on her release. I assume that you know about The V Wagers (Five Wagers)-"Lucky I Found You". Bobby Rush had several 45s released on Salem.

Robbk Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Yeah! V Wagers.. another one!. also the flip of "Luck I Found You" the excellent "Until I Found You" steve Yes, but THAT was originally released on Sebon Foster's other label: Nation Time Records (formerly Nation Records).
Garethx Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Anyone know anything about Charles & The Esquires on Salem?
Steve Edgar Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Yes, but THAT was originally released on Sebon Foster's other label: Nation Time Records (formerly Nation Records). yup, got it on Nation too, different A sides, didn't know which came first, thanx for that Robb. steve
Kris Holmes Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 I do like the Bobby Rush 45 I have on this label, pretty sure I have other good ones filed away but am blanking on what they are right now.
Pomonkey Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) Nothing beats Frances Burr "I say no, no more", but Jimmy Ellis "Putting it on your mind" is a winner too Edited July 18, 2012 by pomonkey 1
Robbk Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Anyone know anything about Charles & The Esquires on Salem? I do know that those "Esquires" are not the same Milwaukee group that had the hits with Bunky on Bunky and Wand records.
Tricky Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 There is another much harder to find V Wagers on Salem.Too far to turn around now.Superb quirky sweet tune.Absoloutely love it.

boba Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Anyone know anything about Charles & The Esquires on Salem? no, except there are also two singles, one billed as Charles McNair. They share a side I think, I would have to pull them out.
boba Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 There is another much harder to find V Wagers on Salem.Too far to turn around now.Superb quirky sweet tune.Absoloutely love it. It took me a very long time to get a copy. I think I've only seen it 2-3 times at most.
Robbk Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 It took me a very long time to get a copy. I think I've only seen it 2-3 times at most. That one must be VERY, VERY rare. I've never seen it.
boba Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 That one must be VERY, VERY rare. I've never seen it. Not "VERY VERY" but it is rare. The 5 wagers have two other records that are much harder to find.
Guest Dave Turner Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Ray Pettis "Question and Answer also got released on Salem as well as Teako Depending on what kinda sound you're after but there's some nice "deep" stuff on the label Jimmy Ellis - Heaven has Blessed You Benny Davis - Tell The Truth
boba Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 One of my favorite Salem records is Jackie Bee "It's a possibility" (backed by Richard Pegue's group the Norvells...).
Tricky Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Also on the sister label Nation Time the sublime Colour me foolish Leontine Dupree.Crossover perfection!
Swifty Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 maybe out of my depth a bit here but I had a nice track by KIRK TAYLOR - GOT TO HAVE SOMEBODY - SALEM WDJ. Cheers Swifty
boba Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Anyone know anything about Charles & The Esquires on Salem? whoa, total coincidence, but i saw this age title I'd never seen before and just bought it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/370629274320?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 I actually thought I probably had the whole label but never tried to write down the catalog to check. But I hadn't seen this one. Anyways, if you listen to the sound clips, it sounds like the voice on the Charles McNair records and the writer on this is McNair. Maybe I'm over-hearing a similarity because the topic is up now but it is a distinctive voice.
Pomonkey Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 The 2nd Frances Burr is blah, also not too excited when got Charles McNair "Bundle up and go/Sometime beats no time"
Kev Cane Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Got a great mid-tempo track on Salem Nat Brown-If thats what you want go ahead, there was a thread on here a while ago, don't see it about much, perhaps Boba can spread some light on this one, well worth getting if you see it though Kev
