Burning Desire

Why She Had To Go C/w You Must Do Your Best

So rare it hurts!

Drop the needle on any side you choose, you will be treated to vocal-group excellent sitting in two different genres. Tyrone Taylor and his five teammates craft two strong examples of 70s vocal-group distinction.

Topside's countdown gives way to a slick bass guitar rhythm, subtle congas beat out the pace with Tyrone Taylor's sleek vocal tones taking lead, as timely vocal group assistance enriches the this very classy, jazz-infused session. PURE CLASS.

Flip it over for a "Slave" style dance experience - high-pitched chants step back for the falsetto lead to unleash itself. Vocally outrageously good, but as with the top side it's the highly accomplished jazz-infused instrumentation that lifts this record into greatness.

DOG-RARE!!

Just so darn

Chuck Young

The Shower Of Love C/w From Sam To You And Me

Some American towns carry a huge reputation for local music and independent labels providing all manner of interesting vinyl, San Antonio, Texas is one; another that springs to mind is Greenville, South Carolina.

This super-rare 60s Northern Soul backed with a Deep Soul flipside was born from this city with well less than a 1,000,000 people in the 60s, makes you wonder how many were musicians and singers with a seemingly endless delivery of Rare-Indie creations.

Chuck & Liggon S. Young joined forces on this imaginative hammond driven Northern Soul outing, showcasing an expressive vocal and finger-slick keyboard work, a wah-wah guitar keeps the rhythm going on this fluid street-level dancer.

Flip it over for a deconstruction of Sam Cooke's classic, with a descriptive rap-intro underlining his views on life - before seamlessly sliding into a slant on "A Change Is Gonna Come" - superb overlooked Southern Soul jewel.

You Are A Part Of Me

1984 witnessed the last release on this iconic label, and Leonard again unwittingly molded another extreme rarity.

Leonard Jewel Smith left us with a delicious girl-vocal two-stepper delight.L.J.S. incorporates a subtle synthesizer backing, which cleverly falls into an inconspicuous rhythm, the flooding seamless vocal group calls, the skilled plectrum plucking complimenting, what can only be described as a sultry temptress on lead.

Leonard & team you were geniuses!

Sweet Magic Inc: I'll Do Anything

You are viewing one of the most-magnificent, most-wanted, least seen modern-soul albums on the planet. 1981 Patterson, New Jersey D.I.Y. project that sadly failed with sales but succeeded in providing the soul collector with 8 track experience of anti-disco 80s soul.

  • inc: the I'll Do Anything, Let's Play Luck, We've Only Just Begun, Sweet Magic plus 4 more.

Not a note of disco-cliche, not a single crass lyric, electric drum or overloaded synthesizers. Just unadulterated distilled soulful music in it's purest state.

Little wonder this album has the reputation of being one of the ultimate lp-Grails; not only hinged on rarity but a credibility of the 8 tracks of heaven it gives up.

Sweet, Sweet Baby C/w Champagne

Shrine, Artco & Teri De are these the top 3 most-coveted labels for the Northern Soul scholar. We think so.

Teri De was the vehicle for the extreme talents of Leonard Jewel Smith &friends. Almost without exception L.J.S. and a mixture of Jimmy Conwell, Sir Hank Graham, Ben Gresham, Miles Grayson, & Godoy Colbert would craft total Northern Soul on these most-prized 5 "flesh" coloured releases.

This August 1967 example, as the previous 4 do, offers classic style Northern Soul not once but twice over. Upbeat, feelgood, extravagant vocal-group arrangements you cannot find a flaw with.

This copy the vinyl has some fine light surface blemishes and a tiny "vinyl pimple" NONE of which affect play - check out the highly-impressive double-soundfile it plays flawless, then gaze upon this prestigious label and dream of owning them all. (hardly anyone does)

Charlie Harris

All Over Town

From Fred Kibble's highly coveted Houston, Texas stable comes this eye-popping totally gorgeous super-rarity!

Tex-Mex trumpet calls Charlie into action, has he runs through the dances taking Houston by a storm supported by those infectious trumpets. The whole thing comes together like a trusty Major Lance tune.

A case of "simple is genius" also a case of absolutely resplendent REDVINYL and stupidly hard to find.

Impressions

You Ought To Be In Heaven

Not only the Impressions rarest PROMO on ABC, this copy is PERFECT!

A b-side that made it huge, on the back of plays by imaginative NS DJ's who peered past those other obviously superb Impressions ABC dance sessions. This particular 45 from was lifted from their highly regarded "Fabulous Impressions" album.

A top-drawer killer tune, where the real value lies in it being a seldom-seenPROMO copy is "as new" condition.

I Can't Get Enough Of You C/w Without Your Love

WOW!

With uncontrolled envy in 1975 I gazed at Soul Sam's Cleethorpes Pier turntables, whilst he debuted this juggernaut of Northern Soul to the "Pier People". I loved the label, I'd never seen it before, but this was "proper" "real deal" NS I thought, so my quest for a copy began.

It was fully 20 barren years or more, before I eventually netted a copy. Imagine my ecstasy when I flipped it over to investigate the b-side; revealing as we all now know now, the very summit of the Beat Ballad sound! Up to this day, I've never heard a finer example of the Big City Sound!

Today this incredibly rare disc offering two magnificent examples of our music is on the market for only the 3rd time in all my years of vinyl-sniffing. And it still excites me, every goose-pimple as much, as it did when Soul Sam was doing his legendary "Waist upwards" gig to it, standing very smug behind those North Sea decks.

Ooo Baby Baby C/w All That's Good

Third release in the newly launch EMI Tamla Motown label of 1965 and one of the few British releases that delivered pure vocal-group Heaven. (Originals - Baby I'm For Real - also jumps to mind)

Perhaps the British public were not ready for this forward-thinking masterpiece it as not until the early 70s when the Delphonics & The Stylistics made sweet soul popular in the UK. It sold poorly as the Brit-Tamla fan was firmly hooked on the upbeat driving dance tune.

A a groundbreaking sweet-soul-harmony ballad that stood as a benchmark for others to follow as it reach top 20 Billboard charts in the USA.

As the TMG503 with an EMI "Factory Sample "not for sale" sticker" in flawless condition it is a rarely witnessed number in the series.

Two perfect labels, vinyl that only reveals a light blemishes in strong light.

Twisted Wheel Flyers

June, July Forthcoming Attractions + Special Summer Admin Price

10th of June 1969 a Burton On Trent teenager received his eagerly awaited Twisted Wheel flyers. As a member of England's most-renowned All-Night Club he must have been ecstatic to see Jamo Thomas was live at the the end of the month, James Carr would take the Whitworth Street stage July 12th.

Astonishingly these two artifacts of MOD and Northern Soul history have slept inside the original postal envelope for 41 years! Condition could not be finer!

The 8 act billing for June / July 1969 ignites an instant yearning for a time machine - the 10 /- special admin price handbill is a historical testament that during the summer months most self respecting MODS were at the seaside come the weekend!

Two leaflets that say so much about the embryonic Brit-soul/MOD-scene of the late 60s; a window into the eyes and mind of that Burton On Trent teenager who religiously made the trip 150 mile round trip on a Saturday.

Today most of you reading this review, would walk a 15,000 miles to witness James Carr taking care of business, and some dare we say, may not understand what 10 /- means.

Pleasures

Music Cty C/w If I Had A Little Money

Jack Nitzsche relentless arrangement, creates "Popcorn" 5 Royals style vocal-group beater, the novelty lyrics and background vocals all add up to a memorable & different production, that has you dropping the stylus again for another listen.

Released in 1963 on the street-level label "Catch" but as Britain's most collectible 45 label -this is a super-rarity in the series; # 357 in "as new" condition snoozing in it's original birth sleeve!

Condition of this level in 2012 is just totally unattainable, this is one for those many of you who demand peerless condition, inside their much-adored label runs.

And you are viewing a ridiculously elusive member within the Daddy-Of-All-Brit-Labels.

Leonard Jewel Smith

All My Good Lovin' (is Going To Waste) C/w The Elevator Song

It's that man again!

Len teams up this time with Hal Winn, a man who guided respected Los Angeles soul acts like Brenton Wood etc. In fact on this recording both sides are produced by Brenton Wood, Hal Winn & Maurice Rogers, arranged by Gene Page, with Len Jewel co-composing the lyrics.

So what did this meeting of the minds create on Paul Gayten's Hollywood label in the summer of 1970.

Topside is a brass & vibe driven joy, that above all previous recordings frames L.J.S.'s vocal prowess to the maximum. Hal & Len's penchant for the vocal-group chorus is again evident throughout.

BUT THERE'S MORE!!

flip over for a previously passed-over sensation, that has in recent times overtook the a-side as the more-curious NS DJ champion this choppy upbeat crossover dancer, that is every second as good as the classic a-side.

Two sides to-die-for, but what else would you expect when all these guys take lunch together.

Claude Baby Huey

Keep It To Myself C/w Didn't We Have Some Good Times

M. I. O. B.= Music Is Our Business.

And what a satisfying business it is, when 45s of this calibre come up for sale!

Claude Baby can't help himself but unceasingly singing with arrowed-attitude, his turbulent vocal style marries completely to Ozzy Osborne's horn-driven production, with Frank James adding the compulsory girl-group the whole sessions welds into another Claude Baby Huey excursion into Bay Area Northern soul.

Flipside is another example of Huey's masterful technique with the Deep Soul ballad, as he raps and bemoans his way into your heart, again aided by those harmonic girls.

We think this 45 is another case of a truly fine piece of rare Northern Soul just begging for the right DJ and club....to then fly!

Wynder K. Frog

Green Door

Condition, condition, condition!

Mike Weaver's band captured the very essence of mid-60s British music circuit as they backed other Island acts like Jackie Edwards, Traffic etc on their regular tours of Brit-Clubs & Universities. But also manage to record some of Island-Label's most-wanted.

This 1967 example is something of a Northern Soul classic & a MOD anthem. As it's wildly off-the-wall arrangement would leave it stuck in your mind days after leaving Wigan Casino, where the DJs of Mr. M's room would play the hell out of it.

This is a good time tune! Not for the NS purist perhaps, but a recording that still has the same effect today as it did back then, filling the dancefloor and constantly replaying itself through your pre-frontal lobe at the most-unexpeted moments.

We are pleased today to be able to offer this 45 in it's rarest form in condition you can only dream of in 2012! Other than a brief light sleeve brush this record in PERFECT, having been filed in a hoarders collection apparently since 1967.

Some people thankfully for our many perfectionists, don't play records they just file them!

Tobi Lark

Lots Of Heart

Every single note as good as any street-level female soul 45 to ever emerge from the Motor City.

Mike Hanks flexes his studio talents by writing, arranging & producing this Tobi's RAREST 45. A mid-tempo groove featuring a lavish gathering of shrill girls to back Tobi's incredible vocal range. Just like her "Time Will Pass You By" the "voice" pierces the air with expressive trembling accuracy. Mike's use of the keyboard breaks up this ladies night into segments of pure Detroit dance.

Undeservedly, perhaps her least known Northern Soul offering, another case of a 45 suffering from it's own rarity. But I'm sure exposure on the auction will ignite greater awareness - of what is a thoroughly enchanting Detroit Delight!

Occasional but light age spots to the yellow label (see scan), Vinyl is the finest I've encountered in recent times for this rarely seen above vg rarity.

I thought that Penetrations on Teri de would have made more, great double sider. I think it's a very rare record, a quick look on popsike shows 4 of them & only 2 in half decent condition. You see the groovers about now & then but not so much this one.

Great label to collect, the pink/flesh colour Teri de, all 5 releases are good records.

The Charles Brandy record ....hadn't heard it before. It books at £3000 for the promo in JM's 5th..... so did the buyer get a bargain at £1084???

Couldn'r find any popsike or collector frenzy entries for it so difficult to tell.
