Lookalike Reissues (Light In The Attic Records)

Had this up in the Frederick Hymes thread, but had no response. Anybody that can clarify the following.

Can anybody clarify if there is an easy way to tell the difference between originals and recent lookalike reissues from Light in the Attic Records (never seen them in real life). I recently spotted a 45 from the reissue box Wheedle's Groove (and expect the Volt/Stax releases, etc to be the same) on ebay and it appeared to have been worn/used as an original.

As a collector I find it very confusing. You can see some of the labels in this youtube clip:

And from the label:

https://lightintheattic.net/releases/646-wheedles-groove-seattles-finest-in-funk-soul-19651979-limited-edition-45s-box-set

As an example, I have the original of the Seattle Pure Dynomite and from those pictures it certainly look like they have done a good job when making the lookalike reissues!

After my post in the other thread, I did email the label owner, but so far no response.... Hope that somebody can give a good distinctive answer!

Thanks

//Johan

Surely somebody must have one of the Light in the Attic boxes. This is the 45 I saw on ebay:

Surely looks very much as an original at first sight?

The label was repro'ed from an original copy with the wear and the stamp. It was not 'aged' to make it look old. From memory (I need to look at my original copy at home, which was mint unplayed when I got it) this looks almost the same with some type variation and label tint difference.

I'm guessing that all the repro'ed 45s in this set are gonna be pretty much look alikes so people will have to be on the alert to make the distinction.

This is no different than the recent run of garage and rockabilly repros. Garage collectors have been discussing this issue for a while and we all agree than in 10 or so years when tribal knowledge is fading that collecting these will be a minefield. That is assuming that the original pressings are still worth anything.....

The reissues are really obvious if you have them in your hands, but from a label scan on ebay I can see the confusion. If it seems too good to be true then it probably is......

also if the auction is too stupid and annoying to read.

how hard would it have been for LITA to photoshop the labels so they are clean? Did they intentionally want them to look like that?

Runouts for 45s from the box are all identifiable by a number totally unrelated to any number on the label which is prefixed by "R" eg. R12345.

Thanks for the good input! So, the dead wax matrix number on all the reissue pressings starts by R, correct? Reason for asking is that when buying online it is not always possible to judge from scans if it is an original or not... matrix number is an easy thing to ask a seller about!!

Btw, the only reply I got from the label was: "Yes, they are replicas of the originals, but there are clear markings that it's not an OG...."

This is what I presume, also not that the label refers to them as "replicas", oh dear...
