Skiing In The Snow C/w Why Did My Baby Turn Bad

Wigan Casino personified!

This is a Northern Soul ANTHEM in the strongest sense of the phrase.

A 45 that only sporadically comes to market, a much-loved NS jewel that holds vivid memories of the early 70s, the experiences and times we shared traveling, dancing and seeking to own what those demi-God DJs fed us every Saturday.

No NS-Old-Schooler reading this review will not have a memory nailed to this tune!

Yes, Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, Cleethorpes Pier - your local Youth Club where the DJ had a treasured acetate cut so he could Wow-the-locals.

Skiing in the snow - was part of every Soulie's development years during the 70s. Here's a neat demo copy looking to hook up with a few old-friends.

Don Fardon

I'm Alive

a MOD anthem...

A bi-product of 60s beat-band The Sorrows sees it's main singer and Sorrows hit writer Miki Dallon team up 4 years after "Take A Heart" again crafting a punchy session of brass, fuzz guitar, hammond rode by Don Fardon's screeching vocal.

Miki Dallon obvious penchant for "Black Music" offers moments of both "Soul" and "freakbeat" as this session unfolds on ripples of attitude and defiance, making for the perfect MOD dancefloor experience.

This 1969 UK press in in flawless condition still retaining original company sleeve.

Main Change

Sunshine Is Her Way

Former Wigan Casino Richard Searling MONSTER cover-up. Seen here as perhaps the most perfect copy in the world! complete with it's original promo handwritten lyric insert.

1972 New Haven, Connecticut creation from 7 man band lead by Joe Pelliccio on vocal, conga, drums & piano. A predominately a horn driven band with all 7 guys on brass and other instruments, strongly influenced by fellow blue-eyed Connecticut band The Wildweeds - although neither band knew it at the time both groups crafted fabulous feel-good upbeat Northern Soul.

If you seek the Wigan-winners you ain't gonna find a more perfect copy than this!

Bob & Fred

I'll Be On My Way

Bob Thomas & Fred Brown deliver blue-eyed sublimity in it's rarest form!

It always hurts when I hear this record!

In the 80s when me and best mate Andy Cox would trawl the highways of the USA foraging for soul vinyl. We'd often traveled I 90 Boston to Chicago dropping off in selected cities. Looking back, this style of holidaying totally bored Andrew he begged me more than once as we passed the sign Niagra Falls "could we detour just a few miles and have a peep.

"WHAT !! it's just a ton of water crashing down with hoards of camera laden Japanese tourists gaping over the railings. Can't think of anything worse, let's go to Buffallo much nicer place". (Has a record shop or two.)

Let me tell you what much worse than not seeing Niagara Falls; is to be told years later of the major hit of Detroit vinyl found in a small Niagra FallsRECORD SHOP no one ever went to, and the copies of Bob & Fred that languished there for $1.00 .

On the few occasions I've met Bob & Fred since ... It hurts, really hurts, as this is just the most alluring Motor City blue-eyer ever made. LOVE IT !

Shorty Billups

Shake Off That Dream C/w Alone

Without question the rarest of this killer tunes mixes & labels with this take being backed with a one release only, Deep Soul flipside.

Check out the soundfile, there's is no hint of trying of commercialization this earlier Shorty Billups d.i.y. production, as opposed to the Gary Paxton's steared Garpax session.

Shorty's gritty gravel-coated vocal bobs and weaves it's way through a maze of strings, bass guitar and piano creating an irresistible dancer supported by a girl-choir, this is 70s soulful-dance of the very highest order.

If that's not enough the flipside gives up a Deep Soul ballad which Mr, Billups claws, pleads and begs his way to heartbreak.

Do you need to hear an more?... no of course not.

Visions Of A New World

We Make It C/w Children

Highly elusive Illinois indie 70s dance-soul, offering up two cultured vocal-group dance tunes.

Intricate guitar work, subtle background symbol roll out the carpet for this skilled vocal-group to stroll along. Each members takes his turn to flex to lead, showing off the depth of vocal quality in the studio that day, the end product is a towering classy-dancer that clubs of the likes "Soul Essence or The Orwell" have jostled to for the last decade and more.

  • Quality

Flip it to find an every note as good, vocal-group experience, slightly more jazzy, but still presenting fluid, tight elevated vocals perfectly tuned in.

Two great sides of this most-popular genre.

Bobby Bland

Turn On You Lovelight C/w You're The One (that I Need)

In our experience this is Bobby Blue Bland's rarest UK 45.

The original version of a much recorded song, written by "Duke Residents" Joe Scott & Don Malone (Robey) - how anyone could ever hope to betterBBB at singing anything is bemusing - just listen to the consummate ease this man floods his recordings with a range of vocal pitch and the perfect timing of the unique trademark of angst, he effortlessly injects for that "soul" effect.

Soul & Blues GOD! with his most elusive British 45.

Big Dee Irwin

You Satisfy My Needs C/w I Wanna Stay Right Here With You

Perfectionists gaze upon a 46 years old in exactly the same state as the day it was born.

A perfect UNPLAYED copy, of Pam Sawyers & Lori Burton's mid-paced masterpiece, guided by the skilled Roy Glover string arrangement, as Big Dee Irwin's gently purrs the opening lines, the girls coo the chorus signaling Dee to up his game - and how. Bellowing out the lyrics to compete with the ever increasing volume of brass.

The BIG CITY SOUND doesn't get better than this - and the condition certainly can't..

Mind Ration

Always And A Day

Without question the most exciting part of collecting Northern Soul is a new discovery or a record only few are aware of.

This feisty number ticks all those NS boxes, take a listen consider the potential for those DJ's who enjoy turning heads and playing the unusual, exclusive and fresh!

TheTener label released all manner of 60s Florida local recordings, is notorious for tiny "Custom" runs, sometimes as little as 50 copies would be the sum total of release. We have no way of knowing exactly how many copies this example were made. But one thing we are certain about, is that this like all 45 on the label - is stupidly-RARE

Frank Howard

Judy C/w Smokey Places

Distilled Northern Soul CLASS!

Utterly exquisite dancefloor experience showcasing a fleetingly haunting girl chorus nourishing Frank Howard vocal as it grows into the driving force of this stunning example of our music. So darn good - it's shiver inducing.

Then again the Latin infused flipside is rather good too....

Jackie Wilson

Whispers

Jackie's most highly regarded and rarest 60s Soul album, in a most-desirable form.

You are viewing a ridiculously RARE 1966 Coral licensed for Australia release through the Festival group of labels on Calendar Records. Boasting a fully laminated front and back cover, the rarely experienced "tapered" and titled spine and a glorious orange full track listed label.

Jaw-dropping-beauty, offering stand-out tracks throughout. including his finest Northern Soul moment "My Heart Is Calling" plus "Whispers" "I'd Don't Wanna Lose You" "Just Be Sincere" are amongst this 12 track masterpiece.

Without question the album rarest and most admirable form. Upon holding, touching and gazing upon this gleaming Mint - / Mint - copy - I don't really feel I am a skilled enough wordsmith to do this ultra-rare item full justice.

Take my word for it - in the flesh this album is goose-pimple inducing!

Tobi Legend

Time Will Pass You By C/w Heartbreaker

OMG a STOCK COPY!

We all love record finding stories, so let us assure you this "Legendary" 45 was not found in the USA. Of course it wasn't!! For almost 40 years 10's of 1000s vinyl-hounds have been turning the USA upside-down for treasures of this calibre.

It was discovered in SCANDINAVIA last month and until it's unearthing most probably UNPLAYED. vinyl is see-your-face-in-it perfect. The only flaw is a drill-hole at the edge of the label, that has caused a minuscule stress hairline in the deadwax.

Do WIGAN CASINO anthems get any more enticing than this offering - no they certainly don't and when they've never met a Northern Soul turntable before today they are ridiculously desirable.

BEYOND RARE and saturated in Northern Soul street-cred.

Freddie Houston

If I Had Known C/w Only The Lonely One

Turn the volume down or Freddie Houston will tear your house down!

The rarest of his two Old Town 45s is a Bobby Adams composition sewn into a gargantuan production; saturated in horns, girls and depressive pained vocal delivery that Freddie made is trademark.

Addictive Popcorn flavoured bluesy Northern Soul replicating that "Stafford" atmosphere Sam Fletcher made into a timeless monster. But Freddie does it angrier, harder, longer as his vocal erects the hair on the back of your head.

Freddie Houston offers up the very finest example of this addictive genre!

picked up the exact same Jackie Wilson LP on Calender here in Melbourne 2 days ago for $25 bux...but thats the first one I've seen not on Brunswick floating round, so 50 pounds is probably about right. Always fasinated to see how items that in their orginal format are common, go when the aussie or New Zealand or Brazilan copy gets put up for sale.

I don't know why we bother mentioning and discussing this stuff anymore, everyone knows "Judy" is a £75 record except the person who just paid £400 for it.
