Guest mickeyb Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Only very vague memories...:-)...know I dj'd there a couple of times... Don't know if it was this venue (might have been the Town Hall - or was that the same thing?). A few of us went over on a Saturday in around 81 or 82 with Mike Belgrade who was living in Evesham at the time. A load of gypsies came in and started giving the bouncers a hiding - suffice to say Usain Bolt impressions all round - Spartacus was conspicuous by his absence

The Marine Ballroom had a massive sprung dance floor & was very well organised with bouncers who where polite but you would'nt argue with. My friend Richard Martin was the main Dj & supplied all the PA & lighting

The only other local Soul Night I went to that was like that - ie wild west brawl - was a place in Kiddy in about '79. Think Jerry may have been with us?

Can we get back to the post. As it was a fantastic Sunday night, packed playing all the new soul releases of the day & qaulity oldies.

Guest mickeyb Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 No problem we are all getting to that time in life. I've got a northern /motown night at the Bear Hotel in Alcester on saturday 23 june if you're nterested Sadly we're now in Reading - NS wasteland - despite Greety's best efforts. Not bad for Jazz Funk though. Pele, Benny, Horace etc and all the old Evesham/Pershore crowd would love it.

At the marine there was a side room originally playing northern soul & later playing jazz funk, inc tracks like goody goody - it must be love & al hudson - spread love. If you are still in touch with them ask if they remember lads from Studley / Alcester including Nick Crow, Jeff Barber, Kev Alder & Vince O'Neill
Soulman Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 I'm sure I went there once. Had a mate who moved over that way. The floor was very much like the Ritz at Brighouse. Sprung, light wood, polished. Went over to see my mate a few times which is where i took in the Locarno and a Club Lafayette night if my memory serves me right. This would have been around 1979 ish. Am I right? There was also some stock car racing at Hednesford if I've got the right place. Oh help.... I can remeber people, records but not places....why? Steve
New Members toomuchtooyoung Posted October 18, 2023 New Members Posted October 18, 2023 Absolutely. Can't remember which day of the week it was but Northern Soul night was unforgettable. All those backdrops and spins. My biggest regret was not going to Wigan Casino
