Cunnie
Been thinking of posting this up for a while & as it's livened up a bit today here goes. What are your best DJ's from the past, the present & your tips for the future? Here are mine to get the ball rolling. 1, The past, tough one this but i've got to go for the late Nev Wherry, got some great memories of Nev from the KGB niters in the 70s. 2, The present, on the northern scene it has to be Butch, on the modern scene i could name several {Fish, Mark Randle, Roger Williams etc) 3, The future, tough one this but on the northern scene keep an eye on James Trouble & the lads in Manchester but keep looking over your shoulder at some of the lads in Japan, those guys really know there stuff. On the modern scene there's only one winner, 19 year old Jamie taylor from Wallsall's soul underground. Saw him last night at the Bass Museum & he really had the place rocking, surely got a great future. A special mention must also go to the guys who fall into all categories, Richard Searling, Soul Sam, Colin Curtis to name but a few. Away you go........ Japan...aren't they a bit far off to worry the UK Dj's? Besides there are plenty over here who really know their stuff Butch has always been the best 60's DJ for me and he's probably got better 70's/crossover and maybe funk than most. Pat Brady in the 80's had a set to rival anyones. As for future I can't see anyone with the quality records to worry the likes of Butch or Andy Dyson. If those two packed in the newies scene would be basically done with as IMHO they are the only two to keep finding quality unknowns. They also have the contacts no one else has. Don't underestimate the guys in Japan, take a look & listen here https://soul45.org/cgi-bin/radioshow.cgi Agree with you on Pat Brady in the early 80s. Forgot to mention Keb but couldn't make my mind up over where to put him! Link to comment Social source share

Don't get me wrong, far from underestimate them, they really do know their stuff, they've been collecting soul as long as we have.....however...they aren't over here and that was my point, hardly a threat to the UK Dj's. In the 80's there was several DJ's with quality sets, Keb, Guy, Pat, Gary Rushbrook, Rob Marriott, Kitch, Jimmy Wensiora, Adam, Dave Thorley, Robin Salter, Ion..several from over the Border in Scotland etc etc. Most DJ's had individual sets and their own style, unlike today. Just wish todays DJ's had the same philosopy instead of many playing the same stuff Link to comment Social source share

Personaly preferred it back then cause regardless who was DJing and how they got there the music was fresh and varied. If today like you say anybody can get the tunes why then do many all buy and play the same records Link to comment Social source share

Chalky
There's no wonder the scene is slowly dying, especially the all-nighter scene when all you have to do is switch on your computer and get practically any record you wish to hear..apart from the likes of the top collectors/Dj's that is. You then have people with more money than sense paying way over the odds for not so rare records because they are indemand and guaranteed to fill the floor.......... How about this for a line up Link to comment Social source share

These dude's should be pitied then really. Or at least encouraged to get out more. There's no substitute for experience, you can't buy it. Think back to when we were nineteen and stuff you picked up and maybe forgotten. But it's always there, stored in the vaults as it were. Plenty of nighters on still, can't dance in front of your pc, unless you're a prat. You can't solely experience the northern scene from home, like comparing Sky Sports 1 with the north bank at Highbury. Link to comment Social source share

There may be plenty of nighters but the hardcore who go week in week out is probably 300 and the youngsters just aren't there in sufficient numbers to sustain it long term. Plenty of nighters really no better than local soul nites when it comes to the music policy As for experience (and knowledge), when we were nineteen we had to work to gain that knowledge and subsequently experience, nowadays it's handed on a plate to many simply by switching on a pc Edited December 28, 2005 by chalky Link to comment Social source share

Guest Netspeaky
Interesting theme, from a personal point of view back in time the DJ's that influence me most were collectors (Bob Foster, Nick Lyde, Big Barry, & Richie Andrews) who DJ'd locally in North Wales (Only) but had big reputations further afield for supplying Mecca & Casino DJ's with top tunes. Moving on Butch stands head & shoulders from the late 80's and still going strong, and if he's going to be around as long as Sam has been on the scene then the future is covered also for the next 20 years. Soulsmith
1. Dunno, there's massive hole in my head where most people have a memory. 2. In no order Arthur Fenn, Terry Jones, Taffy, Mick H. There are very few others that I'm prepared to travel a long way to hear. 3. Maybe Matt Bolton, or JT Col. ps Would like to see a local guy Jez Bishop get more bookings. Edited December 29, 2005 by Soulsmith Link to comment Social source share
