RE: Grand Theft - Body Talk - EMI (UK)

This was a strange group .... 6 white Brits who were produced by ex Episode Six (Pye -- mid to late 60's) and Deep Purple singer / bass player Roger Glover. Just about everything else Glover was involved with in the 70's was HEAVY ROCK (uuurrrgh) but this album features a number of very good laid back jazzy soul tracks.

I think the LP (& the 3 x 45's lifted from it) was just about all we got from Grand Theft ... I guess the guys in the group had been active in the music biz before they recorded the album under this name (with Glover's involvement, they could maybe have included some ex members of Episode Six).

Episode Six was formed in July 1964 by former members of The Lightnings; Sheila Carter-Dimmock, Graham Carter-Dimmock and Andy Ross, and former members of The Madisons; Roger Glover, Tony Lander and Harvey Shield. Andy Ross soon left & was replaced by Ian Gillan (also to be in Deep Purple from the end of the 60's).

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm confused though -- are you saying Grand Theft has some connection to Episode Six or just that it was produced by one of the members of exit 6 (the guy who was in deep purple). I did notice a "ross" in the writing credits, which is one of the names you mention above as members of episode six. I assume this is the LP?

I didn't know that there were 3 45s. I see they have another one called "love burns" on EMI UK. Do you have any info on a 3rd single? Are the other two also soulish or are they straight rock? thanks a lot.

What a nice set Bob. I can see how you've blended this show. A lot of thought has gone into it so thanks for the effort. Know anything about me getting beat on the Philtrations on Ebay mate? :wicked:

I absolutely love the Capricorns 45. I have this and the other on the label (i forget which) but know nothing about it, seems obscure to me. Any info?

Polaris - nice.

Glad you got the Grand Theft Ok.

Their other EMI 45 is .....

"Love Burns" C/W "Turn It Over" .... EMI International Records 557 (1978)

So the A side of that 45 is the middle track in the above post.

The other 45 by (a) Grand Theft is on US Honey (wasn't that Harvey Fuqua's label) - "How Could U B So Cold"

...... so not sure its by the British group now.

The full track listing for their EMI Int LP is ......

Pushing & Pulling; Two Separate Things; Love Burns; Paris To Peru; Body Talk; Seven Wonders; Keep On Smiling; Cold Man's Catastrophe.

Roburt: that is the second one I mentioned already. Can you give me the info for the 3rd one? I would greatly appreciate it. Also, any insight on the lineup of grand theft? thanks so much.

Hi Steve. I actually spend a lot of time on all the sets I do for my shows, not sure why this one seems different but either way I appreciate the compliment.

I did win the philtrations on ebay but it was on ebay twice recently. The first time it went for much less and I missed it. But the high bidder on the first one was DJ Honky so I'm glad it went down the way it went down. Sorry if I outbid you.

There are a lot of records on that phoenix label, there were two guys that ran and produced everything on it, Calvin Wade and "Twinkles" Smith. There are the two Magnum 45s and an LP they did (kool and the gang type group). There are the two aftermath 45s. There is the great expectations 45, the original label that got picked up by Phila O Soul. The label was from LA but obviously they had philly connections for distribution. I think there's at least one more thing that I can't think of right now.

I can't believe how I like every youtube clip that was posted above except the last one about pushing and pulling. Sort yacht-ish but on the soulful end of things.

Bob, I think that the guitar work in "Pushin & Pullin" is too rocky but otherwise the tune is quite soulful (I like the keyboard work on the cut)....

..... It has an AWB / Olympic Runners vibe to me (in a 70's Brit Soul sort of way).

I agree, the guitar makes it too rock for me. Any help / info on the 3rd single or group membership? Thanks a lot for your help already.

many thanks for the info. I got Aftermath 'Gretchen' and that Capricorns 45 you played. Both are kind of low fi productions but charming. would love to hear any others you may have. Are they on any of your shows?

the magnum is fake kool and the gang sounding stuff, the LP came out on CD a while back. One of their two 45s is expensive for some reason. I have a double of the other aftermath, it's pretty cool psychedelic funk about drugs. I'm sure you know the great expectations 45, as it's the most common thing on the label and also came out on phila of soul.

Hey Bob, I like psychedelic drug funk! Do you have a clip mate? Found the Magnum 45's, sound later and more polished not really my cuppa. I do

know the Great Expectations as you say. So just druggy funk for me please.

Bob,

The members of Grand Theft were Peter Ross, Mike Foster, Keith O'Connell, Phil Knight, Neil Arnold & Tony Balch. They were actually signed to Sunburst Records (not the 70's US label that put out soul stuff but a label that seemed to exist just to release Whitesnake tracks). This Sunburst seemed to have a short lived deal with EMI (just for 1978).

Not sure if the group's Peter Ross was related in any way to Episode Six's Andy Ross.

The whole Grand Theft LP has a 'souly' vibe, bit like an AWB album.

The group's 45 cuts "I Never Know" & "Turn It Over" (both B sides) aren't included on the album.

Posted

Probably the same guy as the Peter Ross in Grand Theft .......

An album from 1972 on UK Decca ..... Keith Cross & PETER ROSS 'Bored Civilians' .... this seems to have had loads of fans in the far east & the album has been re-released in South Korea twice since 1997.

Immaculate Fools (a 1980's UK group) consisted of Kevin Weatherill (vocals, guitar) and Paul Weatherill (bass, vocals), and ANDY ROSS (guitar) and PETER ROSS (drums). The band's single "Immaculate Fools" reached #51 in the UK charts .....

.... AND the Andy Ross might just be the guy from back in the 60's with Episode Six.

..... ...... both most likely related (distantly) to Diana !!

thanks for all your help. I still don't know the third single you referred to. These are the ones I know

EMI 557 - Love Burns / Turn it over (1978)

EMI 566 - Body Talk / I never know

can you give me the listing for the third single you keep referring to? thanks again.

Bob, the 3rd single was my mistake (as its not on EMI & may be by a different group) ....

... the 45 I was on about is th one I make mention of above on Honey !!

Sorry for confusing you.

The Sunburst label soon moved on from their distribution deal with EMI and so I don't think there was time for a 3rd Grand Theft 45 on EMI.

The LP contains a track that deserved to escape on 45 ....... it's "Keep On Smiling" (written by the group).

It would have benefited from a 45 mix too as the drums are a bit too prominent on the LP version ... too far forward in the mix for me ... the drummer was also a singer for the group, so maybe he sings on this track & so wanted his musical addition up front & central as well (though Peter Ross was their main & more soulful sounding singer).

BTW, what's "I Never Know" like, I'm told it's also decent !!

I doubt there is a connection to the Honey group, which was produced by Harvey Fuqua. It's sort of a generic name, but there was a Larry Wright in Collage on Solar/Constellation and one of the writers on the Honey single is named Larry Wright. it's possible it's the same person and there was a connection between the groups.

Those youtube clips above don't remind me of the olympic runners or AWB, which is whiteboy funk, this album sounds more soulful to me.

Just picked up a copy of Grand Theft's 1st 45 as I really like "Love Burns".

Guess the title of the B side was quite cryptic -- "Turn It Over" -- as it's a bit of a throwaway instrumental. OK I suppose but it would have been better as a vocal track.
