Been playing the wrong version - for years!

Just noticed how much better Patti Austions version of 'You Didn't Say A Word' is.......

Also currently prefer Margie Josephs version of "Lets Stay Together" over Al Greens.

And Mary Wells version of "In The Midnight Hour" is a country mile better than Wilson Picketts.

I am afraid I think you're very worng on all counts there. I know overfamiliarity with a record can sometimes make us unappreciative. However, I can barely believe that you consider these half bate remakes of Al Green and Wilson Pickett match up to, let alone surpass what are two of the finest and most important soul records ever made. Christmas madness or another case of championing obscurity?

Col,

Have a great jazzy version of Lets Stay Together, with Jean Carn on vocal, will give you a listen sometime.

Also another good modern version by Miss Louistine on an album - Nice!!!

Ouch!.......I'm really losing the argument here. You'll be pleased to know that I remain unperturbed. My mission statement remains to inform, educate & entertain.......and sometimes theres very little to work with here

It struck me that the Mary Wells track might not be that well known. So I'm posting it now, that will give a lot more people the opportunity of telling me how good it is.......look fwd to locking horns later.

Col

ps Alan - love to here Jean Carn version

pps Tony are you coming to our local new years eve bash at the Duke Of York?

Sorry, Soulsmith. Can't agree with on 2 of these. The Pattti Austin version is certainly more of a Soul record than YB's. But it's not a spectacular Soul record in the same way as YB's is undeniably spectacular Northern Soul.

Mary Wells's version of the wicked one is pleasant enough, but lacks power.

Haven't heard the alternative Let's Stay Together that you are championing. Can you post a sound file for me to slag off!

Can't fault Margie Joseph's vocal, but don't you find the arrangement and orchestration a bit of a mess? It's almost as if the producer couldn't decide whether he was making a soul record or a middle of the road jazz record.

My computer indicates that I have now played this 14 times.

I just love those sublime vocals, not once have I perked up & thought "ooh what a mess"

Different strokes & all that.

Col

Col, the record is by Bobby M_____? Cant remember the name, featuring Jean Carn.

Bobby Militello, on 12" and album, album title is actually Rick James feat Bobby M, track Let Stay Together feats Jean Carn on vocals, nice but nothing earth shattering will try and do a soundclip if interested, long time since I listened but I think there is one other half decent vocal rest fairly standard fusion instrumentals (a forerunner of that horrific smooth jazz genre maybe!!)

Cheers

Jock

Hi Colin,

I cannot agree with your sentiments for the last two tracks, however, the first one... WOW.

Wacka wacka wacka... great guitar, great strings, great percussion and fantastico backing vocals... winner in my mind... much much better than the bland, two tone boringness of the version we have been bombarded and bored with  Thanks for bringing this to our attention.. pure show shindiggin greatness :P Send me the full mp3 to my email mate :P lol

Anything by Jean Carne is fantastic and she does a grand job on "Let's Stay Together" I reckon- but I am heavily biased. It's on 7" as well. Wasn't Soul Sam playing it ? There's an absoulutely awesome very sophisticated version of the song coupled with "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Della Reese too.

Jean also does a great version of Martha Reeves "My Baby Needs Me".

Have to say, I hate Patti Austins version of "You Didn't Say A Word". Give me "Are We Ready For Love" any day !
