But the penalties for bootlegging in the states at that time would have been immense , would they really have taken all that risk just to save a few cents a record ?

it's not as if these were massive hits , unlike the Beatles

There was almost no chance of the authorities catching these small bootleggers. The "posed" as employees or representatives of the record company whose records they were booting. There was plenty of that going on all through the '50s and '60s.

here's the thing, if youre not sure, an original, as we all know it to be, will cost probably 10 and at its highest 20 dollars....Side step this fooker and get a proper one!

Not really bothered, like I posted earlier only payed a dollar when the exchange rate was X 2 so 50P, Don't play it out anywhere.

Just curious to know it's background, Any problem wi that ?

You've had one and Mick Smith has one? Just a guess.

Actually one of the few I've never had. Don't think I'd buy it now anyway, it would be £500 which is crazy for a record that you can get for £10 on a stock copy. Mick does have one, Neil Rushton also.

Here's John Manships final post on that earlier thread...

richie,

I think I can throw some light on this strange press. I've only found this variation in Los Angeles. It was common practice for big hits to be bootlegged by the "backdoor". I mean when this hit the charts someone in L.A. decided to press it and supply the shops, usually from the trunk of a car.

I think it's a 60s bootleg or it may have been a legit West Coast press because shipping 1000s of 45s from Detroit to the West Coast would have been very expensive. But there is no New York variation presses of the 45, so my thoughts are it was a 60s boot..and there are quite a few of this type of pressing. Linda Jones - Hypnotized - on Loma vinyl jumps to mind..

john

I had one in my hands on my last trip to Allentown, and let's just say that if it wasn't a counterfeit, then I'm a six-foot-plus Adonis with a knob like a Donkey.

I go much more with the bootleg theory than with the legit West Coast theory, as Wingate used West Coast plants to press Ric Tic issues, and they looked more like his standard Midwest and Eastern pressings than this anomaly pressing. Someone wanted to get this record out on the streets instantly (which means bootleg or Canadian pressing in an emergency).

One of the rarest UK demos of all, that one. Beautiful.

:hatsoff2: HI ALL It really is a rare one, but if I had to chose a rare POLYDOR DEMO, It would be JAMO THOMAS - I SPY, FOR THE FBI, I have never owned either, so it's just a personal choice, but which is the rarest?

Just read this thread again, and if I am right about Canada as the pressing plant, just as a reminder, if Ranking John remarks about Bootlegs is right, we are talking about a place nearly as far away from Detroit as the UK?

Canada on the other hand is inches away, and remember in the STATES a hit record is based on 1st a local hit, 2nd what the septics call a national breakout, so RJM is talking pre NB, and then that makes sense of my CANADIAN press answer? also I can almost guarantee that the RIO COPY was not released at the same time as the RIC-TIC COPY, as we would expect the whole RIC-TIC catalog to have been issued on RIO? does that make sense, the record either way legit or boot, was pressed on the other side of the Atlantic, the USAF supplied the US FORCES with every thing they needed, plus it got a GERMAN RELEASE so why bootleg it, as PETE STATED a great record but very cheap, with the 1 exception,

 DAVE

John Manship says a boot, Robb K who would know as much as anyone IMO says it is a boot, that is all that is needed for me personally.

As said by the known original. If you want this as a collection filler or whatever then fine as well.

A You're right here,

B Got a proper one as you call it, this was picked up because of price and was curios about the design,

C I didn't start the thread, just added I also had a copy,

D Got better things to do than get into arguements with a posstot.

I'm a fool then cos I often argue with John over daft things like this - or disagree let's say - for instance, when he said there was no Edward Hamilton Mary jane coloured label boot and I said there was - and there was...

Kinnell have you been brooding over that for 4 days, let it go, probably a misunderstanding anyway and not worth getting hot under the collar about.

I sometimes get migraines when I read things people have said on here and want to reply immediately, I'm that mad, instead I just try to take the p*ss instead of getting into the arguing. I must be mellowing.
