Old Miami Soul Shows

What a fabulous post! I grew up in Miami. I started collecting records in the late 60's/early 70's when I was a teenager. At the time I was collecting 50's R&B. I remember a buddy and I went into a record shop in Liberty City in Miami. This was probably around 1970-71. We went in the backroom and the shelves were full of quantity on every Deep City release. Apparently the label was run out of this shop. Since we were looking for 50's stuff we didn't buy any of the discs. Egad! Wish I had a time machine to go back there!

Even after numero's first deep city comp came out, Craig Moerer had copies of Them Two available for $75. Even though I had never seen it before I kept waffling on it (e.g. if it's that at craig moerer, is it really worth that much). After a few weeks some dude bought them all and sold them for $300+ on ebay.

As Miami related tracks are now being discussed in this thread ....

... thought I'd add this bit of info about the Marvells / Fabulettes (already featured in a number of earlier posts here) ...

There is a US CD series (2 x 2fer CDsets) + an associated book titled 'Night Train To Nashville' that deals with Nashville R&B ....

One of the tracks on Vol.2 is the Fabulettes "Screamin & Shoutin" cut for Sound Stage 7 in 1966.

I guess this had to be recorded in Nashville (& their earlier cuts as the Fabulettes must also have been cut up there).

Anyone know for sure where their tracks were cut (studio; city) ??

I saw a version of the Drifters at the Castaways circa 1974. Saw James Brown at the Newport circa 79'. Had centerstage front row table. Kinda sad to see JB perform in a venue like that but great to see him up close and personal. The following year I saw him perform for free at a flea market for a primarily all black audience (my friends and I were a few of the only white faces) in Liberty City Miami.

Also mention should be made of blue eyed soul legend Wayne Cochran and tthis CC Riders who was the king of Miami Beach nightlife for years.

Roburt Don't remember alot about the Castaways bar but do remember that the view of the stage and group was great. Think I was more concerned about my date at the time. The Castaways and Newport were across the street from each other as I recall on Collins Avenue. The Newport was beachside and the Castaways across from that. That whole strip there was pretty exciting back then. -Barry

Thanks to Barry for pointing this thread out to me. Some very interesting comments and observations here. Thanks also to Roburt for all the pix -- I've only gone through a fragment of the Miami Times archives, so many of these are new to me. Great stuff.

I did a very thorough history of the Marvells/Fabulettes for Soul Up North a few years ago. I don't remember the issue number, but it was a cover story, and won't be hard to find. The "trio" pix of them were during a transition period. They wound up replacing Annette Snell several times, including a former member of the Twans, but how do you replace Annetta? Even after she left the group, they all remained good friends... and in fact, she had just finished visiting Addie Williams in Miami not too long before her Southern Air flight crashed.

When I get the time, I'll add some comments to some of the posts. Keep it coming, guys.

Another 'lesser known' act to get quite a few 'white' bookings was Teddy Washington & the Soul Searchers. I don't think this outfit had a connection to DC's Soul Searchers (but I could be wrong).

Pity you can't catch such acts in the area these days.

There was no relation between the Soul Searchers groups. Teddy Washington (who just died a few years back) was originally from Jacksonville, and had been around for a long, long time. His most collectable record is a killer cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" from 1973. Craig Moerer lists it often, so it's not all that hard to find.

Another show at the New Parisian Room featured Jesse Ferguson & the Gospel Jazz Singers ..

... this outfit later changed their name to Jesse Lee Ferguson & the Outer Limits ...

and then again to Jesse Ferguson & the Jet Setters ....

Two other members of the Gospel Jazz Singers recorded -- and both got onto national labels as well: Barry Smith, and Patti Jo (Demps).

The Wreck Bar at Castaways still featured good live acts in 73 .....

.... a Chicago (Blue Rock) bluesman a long way from home ....

Roy Hytower played in Miami for several years in the early '70s -- after his recording days. I have a radio spot for one of his appearances at the Wreck Bar, somewhere around here.

Marie Knight had beaten LaVerne Baker onto the stage at Mr. James Club all those years ago ...

... the Bell Brothers & the two great local bands had already started their 'residencies' at the club.

Put up an ad for a show undertaken by the Laddins as Post No.90 .......

The group continued to play loads of gigs around the Miami area even after they changed their name to the Steinways.

I've seen it written that the group (who of course cut for the ABC sub-label Oliver -- run by the young Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell) actually relocated to live in Florida, but I don't know if this is actually correct.

They also played the UK in the 60's .... touring here as either the Showstoppers or the Platters !!!

Anyone here recall seeing the fake Showstoppers or 'Original' Platters group back then ??

I think it was the Internationals who toured here as the Showstoppers but the 'remnants' of the Steinways could well have been the Platters here in the UK.

I know the likes of Roy Tempest (the worst culprit among UK booking agents) fetched over the Invitations, the Internationals (Persuaders), the Diplomats (Sam, Erv & Tom actually), the Gypsies, the Topics & more. All these group knew / shared ties with the Laddins / Steinways, so the group could well have been brought over here as well.

the Steinways UK visit would have been around 1968 (their Oliver 45's being released in 1966). Frankie Gearing had split off from the guys (to be in the Glories) in early 67 and the Laddins original lead David Coleman had left the group in 1965 and by 67 was with Hector Rivera's Orchestra (recording for BARRY). So who the members of the group were when they came to the UK, I am unsure. By the mid 70's (when the Steinways 45 was a big UK NS sound) the remnants of the group were playing Oldies shows around the NY area, totally oblivious that a 2nd UK visit could earn them some cash......as themselves.

Back in the mid 60's, the group were well thought of among the Florida soul radio DJ community, so their Oliver 45's got loads of plays on the airwaves down there. Anyway, here's a Miami show they undertook as the Steinways ....

From the late 60's through all of the 70's, Miami artists were well served by record labels (though in the 60's, many of these were out of state outfits) ...

... but a number of top local club acts still never really made it onto vinyl even though they were top draws locally ...

I have no idea who the In Crowd Band were but no doubt some of their members ended up in groups that did land record deals .....

It wasn't just soul singers / groups that headed down to Miami to play gigs.

There were quite a few high profile gospel singers who performed there

.... & even a few jazz guys ........

In 1959, the Kenny Drew Trio played a gig at the Sir John Hotel ....

Not long afterwards, Kenny relocated to Copenhagen (Denmark) where he lived out the rest of his days.

Before he left the US, he appeared on quite a few Blue Note albums. But after he moved to Europe, he cut tracks for many years with locally based musicians.

In 1971, he co-wrote the music for (& actually appeared in) the high profile porn film 'Pornografi -- en musical' (Pornography -- the musical).

A Sam & Dave 'coming home celebration' show .......

Things turned a bit sour just ahead of this when their old friend & top 'guest' on the show, Otis Redding, was killed in the plane crash.

Obviously the actual line-up on the show (when it was staged) was quite a bit different to how it was advertised here.
