Kris Holmes Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Ok, so I have clips from 8 songs below & have been told different things by several different but plausibly reliable sources. Have a listen & answer the following: Would you say that these are all the same singer? If you were told these were two different singers & the first clip is singer A, how would you identify the other 7 clips in terms of As & Bs? I've been listening the last day or so & don't know what to think anymore, listen to the phrasing, pitching, vibrato, accents etc. https://soundcloud.com/kris-holmes/voice-test I don't want to say anything more to influence your choices but if you could give me your thoughts it could be helpful. (of course if you already know the records please don't spoil others analysis) Thanks

Kris Holmes Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) Isn't it this? a much rarer cover of. Edited May 24, 2012 by Kris Holmes
Kris Holmes Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 it's a weird situation, I have an artist saying these are all the same singer but this seems to fly in the face of what the records sound like & what other collectors/researchers have said. i don't know whether to believe the artist or my (& seemingly everyone elses) ears.
Kris Holmes Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 Sorry Kris - I have a fever it's ok, the terrible condition on that last one doesn't help.
Missgoldie Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 It sure doesn't sound like the one singer, though it's hard taking into account the different keys and era's that change the style they are sung in and of cause the age of the voice. Are any of them besidesthe 1st, on Odex?
boba Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 I already told Kris this, but the second to last record is the Sparks on Della

Kris Holmes Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 I already told Kris this, but the second to last record is the Sparks on Della need to sort if it's the same recording or a different vocalist.
boba Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 need to sort if it's the same recording or a different vocalist. i won't have a chance to record it for a few days. you can listen to it on my radio show page if you can use a low bitrate version
Mark B Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 https://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/W/vicki_williams/index.php this link may be of help ?
Kris Holmes Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 They are all either Vicki Williams or Vikki Styles and are the collected works of both artists (or maybe just the one artist ) minus the elusive Vicki Styles 45 on Lynn's. You can hear them all below. https://greenvilleandbeyond.wordpress.com/artists/vikki-styles/ https://greenvilleandbeyond.wordpress.com/artists/vicki-williams/ The more I listen, the more I think they are the same person.

Sounds like different artists to me - although I've never had the best ear. A definitive answer would be goood.

I always thought vicki williams was from Chicago, as Morgan Park is middle class Black neighbhorhood on the southwest side of Chicago, right next to Beverly.
