Roburt Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Kapps a weird label; loads & loads of MOR stuff - old ladies music, old orchestras, etc .... and then the great soul stuff !!! Who owned & ran the label and just what was their game plan for the label ...... ANYONE KNOW ?? 1
Suzannek Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 https://youtu.be/StrugPRE9-M One of my favourites by Jerry Jackson on Kapp.. the other side is brilliant also Suz x
Sebastian Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 All sides on the two Vernon Garrett 45s are monumental. One of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntmsug-oVus
Sebastian Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 My all-time favourite 45 on KAPP is however an early one by Ronnie James Dio (yes, that guy) from 1965. A tune penned by Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann called "Where You Gonna Run To, Girl". Hardly soul by any stretch of the imagination, but a fantastic track if you're into Brill Building pop.
Guest Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Who owned & ran the label and just what was their game plan for the label ...... ANYONE KNOW ?? Surely something within Billboard to cut'n'paste I know there is a mention of them signing a Mr.Rubin Parker ...I have it within my piles of said magazines.
Jaco Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 My all-time favourite 45 on KAPP is however an early one by Ronnie James Dio (yes, that guy) from 1965. A tune penned by Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann called "Where You Gonna Run To, Girl". Hardly soul by any stretch of the imagination, but a fantastic track if you're into Brill Building pop. Hard to imagine the connection between the artist as he later became and such a great track. Amongst my favourites would be the Exits - "Another sundown in Watts" a sublime piece of soul music.
Guest veep1296 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 My favourites include all of Lenny Welch's output and 45s by.... Chi Chi, Revels, Sissie Houston Sound Judgement Mighty Joe Drake......
kevinsoulman Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 hope to find one of these at the right price one day as good as any of the biggies kev
kevinsoulman Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 JUST PUT THIS ON YOUTUBE SO I COULD STICK IT ON HERE KEV
spinneaussplit Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Although i love the Vernon Garrett 45, my fave on Kapp is still this one: Only seen two issues of this for sale, all the others are white demos.
Dean Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 SteveL - if we ever do that oldies dance spot, I'll have this. From where it began for me:
Dean Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Bit of a marmite record, at the moment I like it but if I heard it out twice I'd soon go off it!
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Especially good when they're Mint!!!!! On the subject, I see you have listed a copy of 'Patti & The Emblems'. How is it possible to tell an original promo, from one of the re-presses?
Guest Brooky Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Hi Steve I'm not an expert but the repro's/boots have a black 'A' . Also I think that I have seen repro's with a red 'A' (think these have appeared relatively recently) that are so obviously duds that it's immediately apparent that they are not original. Someone like Pete S could probably give you chapter and verse.
Guest jerrio Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 SteveL - if we ever do that oldies dance spot, I'll have this. From where it began for me: THE WHOLE SOUL SUPERMAN ALBUM IS THE BUISNESS.
Guest Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Via Pye UK...their, 'Hand clapping...' album also gained a US Kapp release
John Reed Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Surely they dont get much better than this fine pair of consecutive Kapps 1
Kev Cane Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 SteveL - if we ever do that oldies dance spot, I'll have this. From where it began for me: Turn it over Dean Kev
Kev Cane Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Chuck Overton Is it possible Turn it over Smudger Kev
Mike Lofthouse Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Surely they dont get much better than this fine pair of consecutive Kapps No
Guest noss Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) Have posted this before in another thread: https://www.popsike.c...0371621175.html Edited May 24, 2012 by noss
Andy Rix Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Surely something within Billboard to cut'n'paste I know there is a mention of them signing a Mr.Rubin Parker ...I have it within my piles of said magazines. Rubin featured here as a new release ...... Billboard - 11 Nov 1967 - Page 12 Jerry Williams composed the flip side but Jerry doesn't recall who Rubin actually was Andy
Dean Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Only posting as a label curiosity . . . unless of course you want it, in which case it's an exclusive hard to find dance floor monster, just right for today's scene
Smudger Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Turn it over Smudger Yep! great double sider. but i prefer is it possible
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 In your opinions, would you say that this is an original promo please?
Guest Brooky Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) In my non-expert opinion....that's an Original!!! Joking aside...definite Original Promo! Edited May 24, 2012 by Brooky
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 In my non-expert opinion....that's an Original!!! Joking aside...definite Original Promo! Phew!
Sebastian Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 In your opinions, would you say that this is an original promo please? If it's got delta number 103291 in the run-out groove then it's the repro/bootleg.
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 If it's got delta number 103291 in the run-out groove then it's the repro/bootleg. Thank you Sebastian, I will let you know when it arrives
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 No, hasn't got that number Sebastian, just K-11127-4, and K-11126-4 on flip, scratched in to run out.
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) Can anyone please confirm that this is an original copy? Thank you Edited May 30, 2012 by Steve Luigi
Guest Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 In your opinions, would you say that this is an original promo please? Genuine. If anyone has got a mint looking promo that sadly plays all the way through with a hiss, then maybe it's my old copy...it got damaged when I DJed with it one time. Shame really as I had bought that copy from Russ Winstanley straight off the decks at one of the final Casino nighters!! Almost wish I had kept it now for sentimental reasons!
