Guest tanga_the_indestructible Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Hello everyone, new here. I've heard that there are some house records being played by jocks on the modern scene. Can anyone tell me more about this, like who the DJs are and the tunes they're playing? Sounds v. interesting.
Guest James Trouble Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Soul Sam played a few housey/garagey bits on Friday: Angie Stone (remix), that R Kelly thing, the Marvin Gaye Project. What sort of "house" do you mean. There's loads of disco stuff that get's played that sounds like house music, with nice piano breaks and bass lines. "Let Me Down Easy" by Rare Pleasure spings to mind. Is that the sort of stuff you mean? Or do you mean new releases?
Guest LeoLyxxx Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 oh there are plenty, new releases, 80s stuff, 90s stuff e.tc. you know, tracks like "space rider" by Shaun Escoffrey, "got a lot of love" by Lenny Williams, plenty of King Street 12"s e.tc. I love good soulful house/garage stuff.. some favourites are Backroom Congregation "sunday morning" , Kym Mazelle "got to get you back" (it's a remix, can't remember the remix title..), plenty of Blaze tracks.. best Leo
Mike Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 a couple of year ago was fair bit of demand and interest nw/nwales , upstairs room at tonys used to bring in "proper" house djs on niters and at monkey in all era room used to feature it strongly once, at some events could get away with it in main and others couldnt:) Dunno what score is nowadays,?
Guest Kolla Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 In my opinion there is a very thin line between some stuff played on the modern soul scene and house music (Expansions, FER, Susu fall under this banner) .... A lot of house influenced rhythms of New Jersey, and New York -- pioneered by the likes of Tony Humphries and Blaze starting making in-roads a few years ago. Neil Rushton used to do a great show on Soul247 but alas all good things come to an end.
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Sam has been Playing Hardsoul ft Ronn Carrol quite a bit as well but he really doesn't like the house sound that much apart from the odd bit here and there. The use of house in modern sets has declined a bit recently IMVFHO but even when it was used it was generally the lighter end not so banging mixes stuff like Duron Tarik, Black Moses ft Big Brooklyn Red Dawn Tallman Michael Proctor UPB stuff, Stacey Mallory, Lefunken, Blaze, MAW, Stephanie Cooke, Jasper Street Company etc John

Guest Johnny One Trout Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Any chance of an RA or MP3 Leo?? John
Petebangor Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 There's still quite a bit of it getting plays at several venues. You can hear soulful house/garage at most Modern venues.Lowton,Winsford,Stoke KGH,Soul Underground,Prestatyn Weekender,Jazz fm weekenders.A lot of dj's tend to include some house/garage in their sets.Colin curtis,Pete Haigh, fish,Baz Maleady,Jamie taylor, mark randle,Paul Sutton are a few that play it.Some dj's won't entertain it.Richard Searling and Sam(apart from Ron Carrol) don't play any. The general concensus is that this year the 'soulful' house releases have dried up a little, and you really have to dig deep for it.I know I certainly haven't bought as much of the stuff this year as I have in previous years.Never the less it still remains popular with a lot of people, and there is an element that are opposed to it. There's been some heated debates on the modern soul forums about it.Reminds me of the 60's v 70's debates in the late 70's when Sam was playing stuff like Coffee-Casanova at the Casino as a new release Hope that helps Pete
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 LOL 3 of those are pretty much exclusively house nowadays Pete i'll leave it to you to work out who i mean ;oP John BTW the stuff you play at home is that Soulful House or is it Bangor ;o)))

JTrouble, I mean actual house records, although obviously Rare Pleasure has been plundered somewhat by house producers (usually badly). Is there a collecting scene among those that play house? I mean, the more obscure stuff on Gherkin and the Jersey labels? Also, if you like Outburst Coalition, then it's worth checking out Family Prayer by Clifton King, one of the best examples of vocal house from the early 90s.

Not as far as i'm aware as such but saying that people do like to have something different but generally and this is a sweeping statement ;o)) big money does not change hands on the modern scene for house 12's in fact even things that really are quite scarce still only fetch 10-30 tops and they are few and far between and generally the better known of them like the Luther MAW thing. Some of my favourite stuff coimes from the early 90's remember Joi & Jorier Don't waste my time ? Tune JoT
Guest LeoLyxxx Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 Any chance of an RA or MP3 Leo?? John I'm afraid not, can you do minidiscs? Don't have the poss. to burn a cd and my gat damn tape deck is broke :-( but it's cheap-o and from early 90s, the label is ultra-ugly but quite funny with a silhouette of a guy in a baseball cap and the lyrics in the song is very Harold Melvinish, you know "save the children" "save the old people" e.tc. best Leo

Ive seen a luther MAW go for £50,recently saw Shazz-Innerside orig mix yellow records for £50,there's quite a quick turnover of sounds, played for a few weeks then on to new things. Most stuff goes for £8 to £12 cheers pete
Dayo Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 Interesting thread this. For what it's worth, me and Mrs. Dayo have been going to clubs like Moneypennys in Brum for several years now. The funky house/soulful garage vibe is the closest thing we've ever found to the Northern Soul scene in it's golden era. What we found is; soulful records witha killer dance beat, nice people who have a passion for the music and dancing, plus almost everyone is off their face! It's underground and elite; we love it.

wendy Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 hey paul angie stone/angie b used to rhyme with the sequence back in the day. so can we expect some old school jams from you next time you dj? (wink) isnt Lemar more pop/rnb than house? just wondering - not trying to start somethin' see ya saturday.... w
Guest Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 HI Wendy, just trying to broaden my (and your) horizons but you know me (if this is Wendy from Dublin) you never know what to expect so expect some old skool jams (maybe). You're right, Lemar is more pop/R&B but the flip of the 12 is the kings of soul vocal mix which is pretty housey. If this is the same Wendy, you didn't go to Smoove Groove because you said you (and I quote verbatim) "Aren't very smoove and not much of a groover". If I'd known you liked the old skool 70s stuff I'd have done you a tape long ago. Moved into the 21st century now though and have a new PC so will burn you a CD. Here's an old skool jam for you (and all our other modern enthgusiasts out there), Special Delivery - This Kind Of Love on Shield. If you see it, buy it blind, you won't be disappointed. Just ask Honest John.
wendy Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 hey paul i still aint a groover. thanks for the offer of a cd. much appreciated. would be delighted to hear anything with a heavy bassline & decent beats. just nothing with polish/class . ta for tip r.e. Special Delivery. hopefully I will hear it in John's set soon at Sleepless thanks w
Guest Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 John doesn't have it Wendy, as far as I know, I'm the only one here with it so if you want to hear it I'll have to put it on CD. It's polished though. Good 70s soul and good production. To be honest Wendy, I've loads of stuff with heavy basslines but nothing that's not polished (apart from the early R&B stuff). If it's heavy basslines you want, get some choice soulful house choonz from me, Joe and Ross. You won't look back.
Neiljon31 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Paulie, good shout on the Rasmus Faber also check out Never Felt So Fly which you probably already know. John Lucas feat Tylene- Join Me on Purple Music is currently doing it for me along with Lynette Smith -Everything Must Change (slaag) Big Moses /Kenny Bobien-You belong to me (big moe) various Stephanie Cooke cuts dj oji & carolyn victorian-he's my dy (king street) odd(ish) but great!
John Siret Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Two of the best i've heard this year: Dimitri from Paris 'Strong Man' feat. Omar Simon Grey feat. Abbey Joyce 'Prophecy' also Joe 'More & More' DFA sounds great. Too add my opinion.
Mattbolton Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 John. Is that the same DFA that The Rapture recorded their dynamite electro-funk 12" 'House(sic) Of Jealous Lovers' on? Orange label with a Ligntening bolt through it? I'd love to hear some more stuff on that label.
RMG Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Good read this...... There's loads of quality twelves out there. This year, so far, is just as strong as previous ones. Prophesy, Strong Man, More & More, Join Me all great Modern Soul..... Also on the PhutureSole label outta New Jersey is a 12 called FLY. Absolute class and popular for Andy Davies, Colin Curtis and Terry Jones amongst others on the Modern scene. Matt, the DFA stuff is outta New York. Black and White label called FALL OUT. Loadsa great vocal cuts on there. If anyone's interested in receiving weekly mailouts with sound clips of the US uptempo stuff then drop me a mail at robgrant@blueyonder.co.uk and we'll sort you out... Cheers, Rob.

Too add my opinion. hi john last i heard of dimitri from paris he was doing a sort of electronic lounge music, with samples from breakfast at tiffanys etc. it was sort of like Pizzicato 5 only more, err, french. has he gone a bit heavier? i guess it was about 7 years ago when his first lp came out n & i havent kept up with what he's up to now.....

Neiljon31 Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 PhutureSole put out consistent quality, Fly is most recent release but also check out Stacey Mallory-People of the World, only been 5 releases to date on the label (i think). Imagine if we were sat here 30 / 40 years ago saying 'oh yeah that shrine label is ok, i've got all 5 so far!!' (obviously not on the internet but you know what I mean) I just heard a track Brent Laurence feat Latrice Bennett--build it back up..... that really got me going, not sure how new it is. Totally agree, Dimitri from Paris/Omar--Strong Man is a tune. These are tomorrows monsters!
RMG Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Yip, FLY is PhutureSole's 5th release, mate. Remixes of it are about to come out by BLAZE and Joe Claussell. Latrice Bennett is also forthcoming. We had a couple of tests in last week. Look out too for Arnold Jarvis - Heaven. Absolute class... Rob.
Guest Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Here's two for ya: CK Radicals - Someday I Will and the new Tortured Soul album: 'Introducing Tortured Soul'....this is THE BUSINESS!! Ross
Neiljon31 Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Rob any idea when the Blaze Artists for life project might get full release ? Maybe it has and I've missed it, any idea.
John Siret Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Reply to Matt & Wendy Matt don't know the record you mention, but all the DFA stuff i've heard is good, i also brought Floetry 'Getting Late' DFA a little while back. Wendy you seem to know alot more about Dimitri from Paris than i do, but 'strong man' is a good record, also Next Evidence 'Morning Breeze' from a little while back had a good Dimitri Remix on it.
RMG Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Rob any idea when the Blaze Artists for life project might get full release ? Maybe it has and I've missed it, any idea. Alright mate. Jap copies were out in May. It's due for a US release anytime now. Killer album...Kenny Bobien, Joi Cardwell etc etc.... Rob.
Neiljon31 Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 thanks for that, I'll keep my eyes out for it. Ordered the Brent Laurence / Latrice Bennet from Juno yesterday
Jason S Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Here's two for ya: CK Radicals - Someday I Will and the new Tortured Soul album: 'Introducing Tortured Soul'....this is THE BUSINESS!! Ross I'd wager you meant SK Radicals? The unreleased version of this cut is a monster. Not 'house' in the slightest but a killer jazz-dancer with an awesome 'live' feel...f**king great track, but thanks to record industry lack of vision, probably won't come out. In termsof 'house' stuff....gave Underground Network - Love Is The Answer a spin the other day...that Live Band Mix still holds it's own...sounds like it could have been a MAW production. And dug out Global Communication - The Groove (original vocal mix) and that sounds better now than it did 5 (?) years ago. I believe Crazy Beat had one for sale last week at £6..worth it.
Guest Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Re UNDERGROUND NETWORK "LOVE IS THE ANSWER" - Louie Vega plays keyboards and Gene Perez bass on the live band version. Derek
